I thought this is how the NSA spies on people for $54 though? What happened? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/346071#comment-5354472

    • +13

They can spy on you for 5% cheaper

    • -1

I don't want to spy on some for $54, let alone pay $54 for someone to secretly turn the mic on in my home. Please do it as you like.

      • -1

Wonder if they have a secret camera embedded in the hardware 😂😂😂

        • No need for a secret camera when most of us already have Xiaomi cameras that we've deliberately installed.

        • -1

          @newdad:

I see a partnership between google and xiaomi in the making

  • Great price! Wanna get one, but I just bought a Google Home from Bing Lee. Don't need a second one.

Might be better cancelling the Google Home order and getting two Mini's.

    • +8

Wait until you get the 1st one and realise they can network and sent voice messages from one to the other, or you can stream music remotely to other locations of the house, you'll be needing more than one. Oddly enough I really want one for my bathroom so I can get weather and news updates while having a shower.

      • That was my thoughts about being able to connect 2. Can they be used as intercoms?

Is there any major benefit of having the Google Home and get a Mini, or save some money and just have two Mini's instead?

        • +2

          "Ok Google, broadcast 'message'".
You cant send a message to a specific google home (yet), so the broadcast goes to all homes on the same network.

We have a regular home and a mini, and even though I paid $150 for the home (on special, before the mini was announced, and which I was very happy with the price at the time), the mini isn't a third of the quality. If I had my time over I'd probably get two mini's and save myself some coin.

        • @reevesc: Thanks for the info. Think I'll save some coin and get two mini's to test the usefulness.

      • +50

Oddly enough mine in the bathroom always reports that showers are imminent

        • +15

          Dad, is that you?

        • +5

@aussiedogga: "dad" is very presumptive in 2017

        • +9

          True; perhaps lets try that again;
'Parental Figure 2, is that you?'

        • +4

@aussiedogga: You ungrateful kid! I birthed you, and brought you up as a single-dad. We are done! You are not my child anymore.

        • +3

          @AussieDaddy: But Luke…… I am your Father!

        • ….says Rey.

      • can you stream music from your phone?

  • Delivery is $5.06 extra for me

    • +1

Click and Collect is free, if a nearby store has it.

  • Delivery is extra. Price in the title is for pickup

  • -1

hmm and I was hoping to get $70 for my free one from Woolies.

    • You should be able to get $35 now

      • Well at least that's $5 more than the points. I had the first comment in the Woollies thread asking if I should take points or Mini and was told I'd get $50 easy.

Maybe Good Guys realised they now need to compete with a flood of new ones being posted on Gumtree.

    • +2

i'll give you 30 for it.

    • +3

I just listed and sold mine this morning for $67.50 on eBay. People are dumb.

  • Are these the ones that have faulty buttons on top that Google had to issue a software update to permanently disable?

    • +1

"The Home Mini is significantly smaller and doesn't have the same number of features — for obvious reasons. It lacks the top touch controls of the Google Home (which turned out to be a critical design flaw in the hardware itself, forcing Google to permanently disable the feature)" - https://www.androidcentral.com/google-home-vs-google-home-mi…

      • Thanks :-)
When I first read about the issue I'm certain the article had a picture of the Mini, not the Home.

As a seasoned award winning poster, you should credit the person who made the original find. I bit my tongue when you ripped my deal off some time ago with no acknowledgement, however you continue to do it. You are a fantastic poster here, but show a little bit of common courtesy and respect.

    • +1

It's all about getting credit from people you'll never meet on the internet

  • +4

Only clicked on this deal to read all the security privacy conspiracy theory wack jobs sprouting off their latest tin foil hat wearing nut baggery comments, only to be disappointed.

While I’m playing Destiny 2 PvP and screaming at the top of my lungs all the bad words I can think of and calling people names and questioning their lifestyle and sexuality choices, I rest easy knowing that Google is there, listening to it all. If it’s data they want, it’s data they’ll get. :D

    • +1

You must get a lot of ads for how a larger woman, who is a mother can lose weight.

      • +1

Mainly ads for Cheetos, couch repairs, anti-perspirants and salt… Cant work that out… :/

    • -1

      It's not a conspiracy.

      • Even if you’re not paranoid, doesn’t mean they aren’t watching…

        • +4

No need to be paranoid. You can monitor the traffic. It only phones home after recognising the "hey google" prompt.

But just to be safe, use pig-latin when talking about your plot to bring down ooglegay.

  • Neato!

  • +3

I just got one from the Woolies promo. I'm underwhelmed to be honest. It seems there is nothing I can do without having a subscription to some service or owning a google device. Want to listen to music? You need a google play music or youtube red subscription. Want to cast a movie to your smart tv? Nope sorry, you need to own a chromecast device. Why can't it just play normal stuff of off youtube or soundcloud, or play my own music or movies from my phone, or cast to a smart tv like my phone does so simply? Unless I'm using this thing wrong that is.

    • +1

hey music also works with Spotify mate….you just have to change settings in the google home app.

      • Thanks, got that linked. A bit limited but I can live with that since it's free.

        • +2

ah k…ye i have Google Music sub so its been really good for me…i can see how you would be limited without though. Strangely enough, i have a personal account rather than a family account, but i can still play music both on my phone and google home mini independently. I do a lot with mine. I add stuff to shopping lists, set times for cooking, tell her to turn my lights and power on and off, etc.

        • @andrgram: seems useful in your case scenario. I'd love to have true smart home capabilities, but don't want to make that sort of investment into a rental property. One day though….one can only hope.

        • @maburu1: haha i'm just starting myself…do the ozbargain way….Xiaomi Yeelights are a good way of a cheap and efficient transition.

        • @andrgram: Sounds like all of this staff is also doable with an Android Wear watch though?

    • +1

There is a deal at the moment for 4 months free Google play music

      • Is that still going? All I can get is 1 month.

        • @Strange1:
Yes I saw that. When I click on the link I get
          "Error processing coupon

          Invalid coupon code "

The annoying part is that I've never subscribed before so I am a new user.

        • @chichi:
Looks like it might have expired. Worked for me only a few days ago

    • Just got mine too. Opened the box, saw that it requires a power plug (assumed it could be used anywhere with rechargeable battery) so put it back in the box.

I don't have anything "smart" except my phone but now u say that u can't even use it to play music from a phone means it is useless to me :( Can ask Google questions on my Android.

      • -1

        $35 + postage to NT ?

      • If you want to play music from your phone without a subscription, get something designed for that job - a decent Bluetooth speaker or a Chromecast Audio and plug it into your stereo.

        • The thing is, I do have a sound system with bluetooth capabilities, smart TVs with casting capabilities, and it all works great from my phone. I'm just disappointed because I thought this would take it even further by doing whatever I was doing without having to reach for my phone.

      • +4

If you want to use it without a wallplug, just plug it into one of your many Xiaomi 10Ah powerbanks. I just tested it, and it idles at around 0.20-0.25A, so it'd last for 40 hours on a single charge of the powerbank. (Uses ~0.30A when in use)

    • +1

Using it wrong google play you can upload your own music Spotify have a free subscription you can use also see the 4 months free offer

      • You still need a subscription for google play to link it, your own music or not (or so it says).

Spotify free doesn't let you chose what to play.

When setting up i saw it mention a 6month google play offer but i didn't activate it at the time, now i cant find it :(

        • +1

Yeah weird, I'm seeing all the comments about free play music and youtube red for 6 months but didn't receive that. The only offers I'm seeing are 1 month free for both.

        • +1

I take part of it back, you don't need a GPlay sub to play your music, despite what it says.

      • You still need a subscription for google play to link it, your own music or not (or so it says).

Spotify free doesn't let you chose what to play.

When setting up i saw it mention a 6month google play offer but i didn't activate it at the time, now i cant find it :(

        • so do you need to gplay subscription to play your own google music or not?

          you have posted contradictory statements..

    • You need a google play music or youtube red subscription.

Free, just switch accounts every 4 months.

you need to own a chromecast device.

You must be the only ozbargainer without one. Got any eneloops?

      • Weird I'm only getting 1 month free offers for both services. Always been tempted to get a chromecast but never really needed it since I have the same capabilities in both TVs, until now.

        • I have the same capabilities in both TVs,

It should cast to Android-TV just fine.

  • I called Officeworks this morning and the guy on the phone said that the item is not in stock at any of The Good Guys Store in Victoria and therefore they will add the delivery fee before they price match with it. The guy wasn't very helpful. Ordered one from Ebay !

    • Last I checked there were a few stores that were showing stock, and the website still lists at least Bayswater, Dandenong, and Thomastown as having stock. Not the most central locations but still in Vic…

  • +3

is the 6 month free youtube red thing promotion still available with the mini?

    • When I connected my mini for the first time (last week), I did see a promotion for free Red but I don't remember for how many months it was. Unfortunately I was already a subscriber so I couldn't take advantage anyway.

      • +1

you can cancel and refresh and immediately signed up for the new offer. That's what I did :)

  • Any differences between the main one and mini?

    • +2

only the speakers, function wise the same

  • Really want a charcoal one but the price is great!

    • Yeah, me too but $2.70 is $2.70! Bought the chalk one.

  • I have so much fun with the one from woollies… I may get another one as my lovely wife is jealous…
    Can you change the voice?

    • Yep you can change the voice

    • Still waiting for my one from the Woolies promotion, when did you guys receive it.

      • Got it about a week ago

      • I got mine on Friday last week!

      • Gone mine last Friday.

      • I contacted woolies rewards on Tuesday, they said the deliveries should be completed by 19th December (high demand i presume), i got mine the next day.

        • Just did and was told after Dec 8th or 18th, woolies call centre girl had a heavy Scottish accent :)

      • Received mine yesterday.

  • Missed it :-(

Update Was in NZ recently and didnt notice I had changed my shipping to NZ so it was showing no stock…anyways go it from the GG website with 6% off thanks to my wifes work discount :-P

  • Dammit I want the charcoal one.

    • Go price match at myer/JB/DJ’s for the $54 price tag to get the charcoal.

  • +2

Just went to Officeworks price beat and now sitting on my desk.

    • Officeworks just matched the price so you can't get the 5% off now

      • I got one anyway so thanks for the tip

  • Do i need one?

    • +3

If you're on Ozbargain , then you definitely need one

    • No self respecting OzBargainer asks this question. You impulse buy and deal with your buyer's remorse later

  • +1

i'm getting an error at checkout

    • Same, then i picked a different store to click and collect and it worked

      • nooo but i don't want to go to a different store :/
