G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 2x16GB DDR4 2400 RAM $397 AUD Shipped @ Newegg

120

DDR4 2400 & CAS15 so nothing special there, but they're 16GB sticks and have RGB so if someone only wants looks and capacity then this is the cheapest way to get them that I've seen in a while.

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1682031… - DDR4 3000, 16-18-18-38 was 367 AUD on 17/11/2017.

    • That takes you to the US store at $342.99 USD. What a rip.

    Might upgrade my XPS 15!

    • name checks out.

What's do the CAS ratings mean, and what should I be looking at? I've never heard of it before - I thought it just came down to capacity and frequency?

    • +9

Clock cycles of latency. Smaller numbers are better, but it doesn't matter much. For gaming, and indeed most workstation stuff, bandwidth (frequency) is much more important. Timings are really only of interest to people chasing the last single-percentage-point gains.

Note that as it's measured in clock cycles, you can't directly compare between frequencies. As a rough guide, you can compare the number you get from CAS Latency divided by Frequency, where a lower number is better - so for these, CAS 15 / 2400 = 0.00625, compared to say CAS 16 / 3200 = 0.00500 - the 3200MHz DIMMs have a lower "true latency" despite having a higher CAS latency.

But as I said, it mostly doesn't matter.

      • Awesome explanation, thanks for that!

CAS latency rating is somewhat important if you have an AMD Ryzen/Threadripper build and want to get the most out of it, as the platform is rather RAM sensitive.

For Intel platform, not so important unless you're aiming to high-score benchmarks.

  • What about https://www.jw.com.au/g-skill-fortis-32gb-2x16gb-black-2400m…

$60 cheaper, and as far as I can tell the only difference is the lack of LEDs.

    • OOS bro

      • Oh, missed that. Was a search from my phone.

    • Yeah, without RGB you can definitely have the same capacity and speeds for cheaper.
