Discounted because there is a newer model according to the Amazon page?
    https://www.amazon.com/Roku-Ultra-streaming-Enhanced-headpho…

    • doesn't seem to be much of a difference between the 2

EDIT: just noticed the newer model lacks the optical audio too

Quick search seems to indicate faster chip and new OS

My first OzBargain purchase was a Roku player :).

    • You don't say

  • +1

I still have a roku 3 laying around somewhere. I still dont understand the usecase for this thing. Feel like itll only work well within the US. Kinda like a less capable boxee box

    • +1

My roku stick was one of the best purchases I ever made. I primarily use it for PLEX and Netflix. So I guess it depends on your needs.

    • +1

Netflix, Plex and YouTube. Gets used every night in our household. Hardly watch regular TV at all these days.

      • But but but my android tv does the exact same thing and arguably a bit more.

Pretty sure the market for the roku isnt for here. Makes more sense with the abundant cable providers they have overseas

        • What it does it does well and has a great remote. Not everyone has a smart TV with built-in Android. I have a couple of Rokus to smarten-up dumb TVs. Sure Android can do more, but I'm not sure how well. Is the Netflix app full HD yet?

@rokufan: Want to provide me with your credentials so I can test it out ;)

Depending on calibre of device; yes and no

Netflix considers these Streaming Media Players to be only ones certified to play Netflix HD video:

          Apple TV
          Google Chromecast
          Roku
          Amazon Fire TV
          Google Nexus Player
          NVIDIA Shield

We use a xiaomi and according to this it supports up to 4k.
We mainly use it for IPTV and I add custom apks such as the yi cam app to use with my xiaomi cam, google maps, chrome etc controlling them with those bluetooth mouse keyboard doohickeys.

Might be the username, but I detect a bit of fanboyism

  • Anyone know if it does 5.1 surround over S/PDIF from Netflix?
On Android TV, netflix will not do this.

    • Yes it does. On top you can set it to transcode the surround sound to the format you want. I use it to only output standard Dolby Digital 5.1 because my Sonos soundbar doesn't do DTS.

      • I never heard of Netflix using DTS.
It is only Netflix that has this problem on Android TV, Not Kodi etc.

But I got Netflix working properly on the blu-ray player again, so 5.1 restored :)

I haven't expressed that clearly… Netflix doens't do DTS, but some of the other movies I watch come with only DTS track. But Netflix does use Dolby Digital Plus, which cannot be put out over S/PDIF AFAIK (with other solution I only got a 2 channel sound output). The Roku Ultra solved that issue for me.

        • @halbook:

But Netflix does use Dolby Digital Plus

This is the problem. A Blu-ray player or old-model Apple TV will do plain DD Netflix over s/pdif.
Android TV needs a DD+ receiver, in violation of the DD standards as I read them.
The Ultra converts DD+ to DD over spdif?

        • +2

@manic: yes it does. You can actually chose what output format you want and then it converts to that. As far as I know this is the only streaming device that does this.

        • @halbook:
          Unless you count Kodi .

  • Afaik, Roku doesn't have aus contents?

    • +1

Telstra bought the rights to roku in aus so if you want one with aus contents like… Stan? or that foxtel stuff, you need the telstra box. It's overpriced, it requires telstra, and it's out of date by a few generations. I'm pissed at telstra for ruining a great product like that, but whatever, I don't care about aus content. I use my stick for plex and netflix and it is a damn good thing for ~$45

      • Does it work with Netflix aus content?

        • My streaming stick I bought from amazon for ~$45 in the last sale works with netflix perfectly fine. If I use it in AUS it plays AUS netflix, if I switch on my VPN, it plays US netflix, if I take it to europe, and plug it into a hotel TV set, it will play europe netflix. It's great like that.

The australian content it does have access to is australian radio, which is pretty nice. You can come home and switch it on pretty much instantly to play some tunes before you settle down to watch a show.

Everything in USA works here with VPN, but it's just a streaming stick at the end of the day, so you'll need subscriptions for everything. The remote is best feature since lets you plug headphones into the 3.5mm jack. Otherwise the sticks are just as good an option.

Meanwhile the Amazon Fire box might be dropping very soon, which seems like a better option since Roku doesn't support some weirder streaming options (eg NJPW)and includes Alexa support which is better then roku's voice seach

  • +1

I have a roku 3 i think, you just need a VPN to set it up and install some channels after that you don't need the VPN to run is. (maybe for channels like hula)

I mainly use it for Plex, netflix and youtube. never for pornhub, nowhereporn or maddyG latenight.

But you named the things you dont use it for so effortlessly.
