      Thanks, added that in :)

The front usb 3 ports actually act as a usb hub, useful for using the drive with a media player or a laptop with few usbs.

  • Archive drives?

    • why would they be anything else

      • Non-critical temporary storage or transport drives.

        • +1

I think he meant the line of drives Seagate makes called Archive

    • Their shingled rubbish line… unless Seagate have had enough of dead units being RMA'd, and switched to using better drives in them.

EDIT: I'd still prefer a WD though.

EDIT2: This review has a footnote under the conclusion. Pretty much says bought two; Two died.

      • Hahahaa oh wow. 2 from 2. Ok may give it a miss.

      • -1

        I prefer WD too

was going to post the back blaze stats but see they are in the article!

        • BestBuy had wd external units for usd130 in the US. Alas there seems to be no way to order from Best buy even using freight forwarders. It may mean that there is further price pressure on other vendors who do ship.

        • @Punkboy: as did frys. These are door buster prices. Good luck getting one.

        • @BargainKen:
The BestBuy deal was delivered as well as in store. They've also had these deals for USD$160 in the past so perhaps drives are trending back down now. The WD units have non SMR type drives.

        • @Punkboy: by all counts on the slickdeals post the website slowed down when the offers went live again making them difficult to acquire.

Not arguing with your, I'd like it if we could get all the offers they do but given our geography, we have to make do unless you got ties to the USA via family/friends etc

Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8TB, in August i paid Grand Total: $194.97 USD for it, this is good deal

  • +1

I purchased one of these in 2016 for $182.20 USD delivered so I could shuck it, still working well.

    Purchased another two.

  • Got one of these in the last sale, it lasted 2 hours before death, luckily amazon footed the bill for the return postage of $55.

It had one of the new 8tb Barracuda compute in it, which are loud terribly unreliable drives, I'll try to avoid getting another.

  • Great deal. I bought the Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8TB for $US193.68 shipped 2 months ago. Shucked it and got a BarraCuda Pro (ST8000DM004). Pretty happy as these drives cost $489 at MSY.

    • +1

This isn't a BarraCuda Pro it's a BarraCuda Compute ST8000DM004 (new version of archive drive)
the BarraCuda Pro is ST8000DM0004 (one extra 0)

Mine died in under 2 hours and was very loud.

I haven't had any issues with my old archive drives though, so if it's working and quiet hopefully you won't have issues.

      • You're right. I thought I'd gotten a great deal :( The model number and green Barracuda labelling seem a bit misleading. Although at the end of the day I only use the drive for long term storage so a BarraCuda Pro would have been wasted on me.

I recall buying a smr 8tb drive from msy nearly 2 years ago for $300. Why are they so expensive after 2 years?

Last I checked same drive was going for 370 or so nearly 2 years later

    • Wasn't there some flooding issues in the country of manufacture's industrial area (Thailand if I recall?).

      • That was in 2011.

  • Bought one, I have 16 hard drives now

    • -1

      I have 20 ;)

      • I am slowly expanding my range, I nomarlly buy second hand for storage purpose, as I only run them 1-2 days per month to put in my photos and other media stuff, 40AUD you can get 3tb with less than 5000 hours in China.

        • Link please?

        • @fufufu: you have to search in Chinese fleet market called XianYu, its a mobile app like gumtree.

        • @JackyQ:

So it's China only or do all of them ship?

        • +1

          Tell me more…

        • @fufufu: China only, I am chinese, lol

  • Damn, that's a good price.

Even though I don't need one of these right now, this is too good of a price to pass up, and I know I'll need it sooner rather than later.

  • -1

Had the old version, very shitty quality..any improvement on these new ones?

  • Tossing the idea to buy this to pair with an existing Seagate expansion (that I opened from the case) and set it as a Raid 1 NAS
    OR
Pair the existing Seagate expansion with a WD Red that comes with warranty instead

    What do you guys think?

    • Using SMR drives in a NAS is typically not recommended, especially combined with non-SMR drives as it will make every drive run as slow as the slowest drive in the array.

  • I purchased this about 3-4 weeks ago. I paid 10 AUD more than this price now. ><….

    • Bought one a month ago too, so I decide to buy another one to average the total cost by 5 AUD, LOL

  • +1

Why bother buying from Amazon AU when you can buy from US and get it delivered in 5 days. xD

  • +1

Saved a $1 on shipping by delivering to an Amazon ParcelPoint.

I've had one from Officeworks (paid about $330) for >9months and is in use constantly.
The only negative with US stock is wrong plug (most likely not have the multiplug option) and having to use an adaptor.

  • There is a lot of people trying to flog these barracuda compute ST8000DM004 drives as barracuda pro drives on ebay. To untrained eye they look the same as barracuda pro.
