  • Should add to the title - $929.10 after OW price match

I bought this for full price on day 1. I'm crying a lot on the inside but for those who are interested in this phone, I couldn't recommend it enough!

    • +1

Don't cry, at least you got Pre-Order bonus.

    • Get a CC with price protection, no need to cry ever again

      • Pretty sure my 28 Degrees card has this feature but I don't have it activated :(

        • +1

          Double fail

      • Damn if only amex offered this!! 😫

        • Yep, i only use amex for the offers. 28d and coles for price protection

        • @aldoduco:
Curious as to why the phone has dropped price so much? I bought for my partner n he seems to love it. Bought it on an Amex offer…lol

        • @KupoHo:

Black friday, probably a Deal with Samsung.

        • +1

@KupoHo: Non-Apple phones don't hold their value. Prices drop like a brick.

        • @vetopower: bricks havn't dropped its price for a while now ;-).

    • I feel your pain. Unfortunately this phone didnt hold its value for too long

  • $878 with 1 Amex..argh such a good price. I have an S8 already though, someone convince me that I do/don't need a Note 8!

    • +2

Buy buy buy , you know you want that pen and extra camera

      • why though? aside from the price, is it really worth it?

        • +1

I find the pen quite useful , I often use the pen as a mouse to navigate , very precise.

        • yeah i agree. my handwriting is too messy for a small screen but it's GREAT at text selection/screen grabs and acting as a mouse. Awesome phone.

    • +2

How much of an upgrade is it really? If anything, the S8 might get Oreo before the Note8. Plus, you could spend that money on something else that’s equally or more pressing, unless of course you’ve got spare cash to spend.

      • +5

Good points. I'll try and pretend I never saw this deal >.<

        • +1

So comparing the Note 8 and the Galaxy S8+ head-to-head, the decision process is rather simple. If you want the biggest and most capable phone that Samsung offers, you go with the Note 8. Its screen is marginally larger, it has more RAM, it offers the S Pen you can't get anywhere else and it has the only dual camera setup in Samsung's lineup.

        • @jayzorz: Nooooo I didn't even think of the dual camera setup (even though I don't 100% know the perks of having it). Decisions decisions!

On second thought, I'll wait for Note 9.

    • I am in the same situation. Literally just signed up to the Telstra Family&Friends plan just 2 days ago.. S8 delivered just this morning..

      What to do..

  • +1

    no stock in any officeworks…

  • Is there any store in NSW that accepts split payment?

    • +1

      Castle hill

      • Thanks. Will call them and try to reserve if they do

        • +1

Be quick they have low stock

        • @aldoduco: i just picked one up from there.

They had 4 of midnight black, now 3 - that was around 11:30am

  • I've never had a phone with non replaceable battery. Can you still take it to store and get it replaced? How much would that set you back?

    • You can get Samsung to do it provided it is AU stock. I wouldn’t trust a 3rd-party technician to do it as they might mess up the water-resistance amongst other things. Not sure about cost though.

      • What cost are we talking about? We've changed battery in our note4 several times so I'm not confident that the battery in the note8 will last. Unfortunately, built in batteries seems to be the norm now…

Edit: can't find anything official from samsung when googling, all I can find mentions that they won't replace it. Looks like maybe third party is only option.

        • Cost of purchasing a replacement battery and labour.
Yes, non-removable batteries are here to stay. They are just another way to force consumers to upgrade their phones at least every year.

        • @albert0pia:
I meant that I'm trying to find the actual samsung charge :) I can't see them even offering this service. Battery is dirt cheap, but I suspect they charge a fortune for replacing it, if they even do. If they don't, then replacing through third party would void any chance of claiming anything under warranty.

        • @fruxo: On the subject of battery being dirt cheap, would that be a genuine or a generic one? The only time I ever had to replace a battery was back when I had a HTC One M8. It cost about 50 bucks. I usually hand down old devices to relos and/or friends. I imagine today’s flagship devices would cost more if carried out by a 3rd-party. I suppose asking Samsung support about it would produce the answers we seek.

        • +1

          @albert0pia:
Bought note4 battery from samsung service center, which was $30 I think. Then bought another supposedly genuine note4 battery on ebay for $13. Didn't notice any difference between the batteries. So yeah, the battery cost itself is not much.

I asked samsung support just now (live chat) and they think they might replace batteries but she couldn't give a number and I'd have to contact service center. The screen replacement is $260 though (more than my xiaomi phone) so I think it's safe to say that battery replacement would not be reasonably priced.

  • Oops. Should have waited a little. Paid $949.05 at Officeworks matching against JB Hifi.

  • Hi folks,

Can we buy 2 separate E-giftCard from Harvey Norman (2x $500) and use both of the eGC in 1 transaction online?

    • Yes done this for two amex card.. bought 2 sets of $400 egiftcard.. received in few minutes :)

      • Thanks for your reply.
I read in the discussion that HN rejected some eGC transaction and refunded the $, AMEX also reversed out the $100 credit. so not 100% sure about buying eGC now

    • +2

not only do you neg this deal but then you want someone to split the savings with you when they can go to officeworks themselves?

    • lol the heck is the neg for? you can find it cheaper elsewhere please post.

  • Guys. Can you please explain what is about Amex? I have Amex card but how it can reduce the price I don't understand. Sorry for n00b question.

  • +1

If you're travelling overseas within the specified period (60 days?), claim GST at the airport.
Just keep the original packing/receipt and convince the customs officer that you're taking this overseas for your long lost family member.

    • +2

It doesn't matter why you're taking it overseas, only matters if you're over your $900 limit on the way back..

    • +1

You don't need the original packaging either.
If the invoice is over $1k make sure your name and address is on it.

  • So I booked one at Castle Hill, NSW. But the price is for today only, store closes at 5:30 and I finish my work at that time. Don't know what to do? Can I pay over the phone and pick up later? Forgot to ask that question from the guy I was speaking over the phone. Phone is reserved till today.

    • Come up with a convincing excuse and leave work early.

      • I wish but I can't. Have an important meeting. Am I able to pay them over the phone and collect it tomorrow if someone knows?

        • Ring and ask them if you can?

    • +1

Can't you buy online and pick up later

  • +1

Just on the phone with officeworks and they are saying HN has it for 987. I argued and they agreed to do it at 978. Price beat 929.10 done. Im in PERTH and will be picking it up. Thanks OzB!

  • Guys please explain about Amex. I've checked out with Amex and it still shows full price 978$? Any idea?

  • Guys does anyone know if I can pay them over the phone and collect the phone tomorrow?

    • another user mentioned that they did this, no harm in trying

  • +2

Went into Valley store brisbane, got one for $978.

    Split payment across:
    $400 AMEX
$578 HN vouchers (which I got through my corporate program for 5% off so cost $549)

    $100 AMEX email confirmation immediately

So paid $849 with one AMEX.

Given I'll sell my S8 that I got with Telstra F&F deal the other day for ~$800 then overall I'm happy with this :)

Will now salary sacrifice this at $978 and probably get about $250 tax benefit too, so brings it down to ~$600), which I wouldn't have been able to do with the S8 it's good all around. Thank's HN!!

(Note: I missed out on the $200 JB Hifi voucher in all of this as I wasn't eligible, and paid about $50 more due to only having single AMEX so didn't quite perfect the bargain).

    • Salary sacrifice Note 8….seen as a tablet?

portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, portable printers and GPS navigation receivers

      • as kcb outlines any portable device :) previous job i used to salary sacrifice a phone every few years ..

  • Lucky I hesitated yesterday :)

  • I got OW to price beat about 45 mins ago. Does anyone have any idea how long it takes before the confirmation email is sent?

    • Is this in Sydney?

      • Nah, I called up their 1300 number and did it over the phone as they didn't have any stock at the stores near me.

    • I price matched over the phone at about 9:30am…

No confirmation email, but my CC has been charged. I have an order number…

      So dunno whats going on.

      • What is the price if you price match with office works is it 978 or 929

      • Just got mine so assuming yours will come through eventually (was in the same boat as you).

        @whtsurid12 - the price was $929.

  • My Genuine Xiaomi USB-C to Mini Display Port Multifunctional Adapter Cable works fine with this.

I suspect even the USB-C to HDMI $15 adapter from K-Mart would even work fine.

That being said, Samsung Dex isn't that expensive on eBay, especially with the code(s), if you want a full Desktop Environment. You will only get mirroring with the cable adapters.

I feel deals like this will hurt samsung in the future if they cant control retail price for their phones

People who purchased full price will already feel their product is devalued only after a few months. This in turn will lead to future sales when people will think twice the next when buying at launch or at rrp. We are talking about a few months here too not even a year or when a new phone comes out.

    • I feel deals like this will hurt samsung in the future if they cant control retail price for their phones

It has always be like that with Samsung

  • since when is Hardley Normal competitive? Tempted by this but much prefer 256GB dualsim…

  • Just bought online for pickup using paypal, how long does the pick up / tracking information take ? Would it be okay to pick up tomorrow?

  • LOL look at these people losing their minds over paying close to a grand outright for a new phone..
Is it really that much better than the older models ?

    • Yep its approx 3 x better than previous Gen.

So if previous gen was 1.2k this has outright value of around 3.6k.

So $1k is a ridic bargain.

      • +1

isnt it a diminishing returns sort of situation though? even though the technology is 3x better the improvements from the previous model arent as useful to most as the improvements between even earlier models. So there is only so much tech you can really use. I'd say people only pay to the amount the extra 'usefullness' is really worth so I'm not sure the outright value would be over 3k thats crazy. Do you get what I mean?

    • but most people are going to be paying $700
      or like me $380
$380 for a $1500 phone is a pretty good deal

      • $380? Salary sacrifice?

  • +1

^Check your credit card T&C as they have PRICE PROTECTION!

    • +1

Agreed. Anyone who has already bought this should screenshot the HN price today and use as a claim on their price protection insurance

  • How about the warranty? Does Samsung provide it or HN provide it?

    • either will i would say, i typically go straight to manufacturer as that's what HN will end up doing (unless you want it swapped over cuz its a dud straight up then i'd go to HN).

  • Officeworks stocks gone :-( . Just bought S8 from Bing Lee for 775$ but I don't feel bargain now.

    • Not sure if I should cancel s8 for 775$ … Your opinions?

      • note slightly bigger, dual camera, s-pen and a little shorter battery life for just over $200 more otherwise the same. I'd cancel and/or return when received if they won't pricematch and change the order

        • The problem with S8 for 775$ - I don't feel True OzBargainer ;-)

        • @SunElf:
Does Bing Lee accept returns when the phone is unopen from the wrap?

        • @sillycow: Buy Australian Law - yes.

  • +4

Office works have now pricematched, so no more 5% off :(

    • Also it's saying not available online (though it was available online a while ago), so they very likely removed it until this deal ends today. Not cool, OW. :(

  • Does HN do rainchecks in case there's no stock?

    • Not for this deal

  • Blacktown has no stock

Castle Hill may still have some, I got one from there just now

  • Does someone know if the AMEX offer will work if I pay over the phone or online?

    • +1

yes will work over the phone or online. Careful though, some HN stores only accept up to 20% over the phone and the rest needs to be paid at the store. Not sure why.

  • is this going to stay permanent… can i claim Coles MC Price protection ??
