Google search for libdvdcss for Handbrake instead…?

          thanks

    • Handbrake can be a real pain to use if your DVD contains multiple titles. If it's just one movie it's a breeze, but one day I had to rip a bunch of training DVDs full of lessons so I could watch them on my tablet. Twelve lessons per DVD, ten DVDs. With Handbrake I had to select every single title individually from a menu, then rename it, modify settings and add it to Batch, then select the next title ad nauseum. Sometimes I'd forget which title I just did and did it twice, or skipped one by accident, or named it incorrectly, or accidentally tried saving it into the previous DVD's folder. The Preview function isn't very good. I kept losing track of where I was up to. It was an awful soul-sucking exercise.

Handbrake has since added an "Add All to Queue" function which wasn't there when I had to use it. Last time I tried it, it didn't work properly when I only wanted to select one audio track and ignore other tracks, turn off Chapters etc. If the DVD was authored correctly it would probably have worked well, but many aren't. Handbrake is updated regularly, so maybe it works better now since the last time I tried it. A google search for "libdvdcss" will reveal how to decode protected DVDs. Definitely try it first before paying for anything.

      • Hi Rep, It seemed to also required a email with the code before I could activate it? Only entering code will not work, have I done something wrong??

        • @Jannie: But what if I am not a member? Would I still be able to use this giveaway? To register seemed to required me to also purchase the product.

          A decent 480P kills a badly encoded 720.

Can someone who bothers to get this tell us what they plan on using it for?
I went to grab it because "Why not? Might use it in the future…" but then realised no, I probably won't ever rip a DVD ever again in the future.

There are some free alternatives as philmccracken has stated so you don't really need this proprietary software.

As for why you'd want to rip a DVD, maybe some people have some family movies or other one-of-a-kind videos they want to save to their computer. But usually those aren't copy protected anyway.

    • +1

Yeah, with digital content readily available from many sources, DVD ripping seems so yesterday.

    • +4

Rip prevously-bought DVDs, stick 'em on the home network for later streaming.

      • +1

        bingo

        • Plausible deniability here I come!

    • +3

To "backup" the DVDs I rent for free from video ezy kiosk but don't have time to watch them that day. So that way I can watch them later

      • +1

I remember doing that on $2 tuesdays from Blockbuster. (Store now closed).
Returning them the next day was a PITA.
Now I don’t get off the couch thanks to Mibox & Kodi.

    • Because of Hoyts kiosk free DVD rental. No need to say more!?

Some people are on slow internet streaming still not an option

  • Once activated, can it be installed again in the future? I still use DVD shrink to this day for 1:1 backups for the odd time I get a DVD (most recently Herald sun $3 specials)

    • +2

      DVD Shrink. Legendary.

  • Would this work for copy right protected dvd's?

  • +3

    Remember good old DVDShrink???

    • Legendary

stopped working for me about a month or two ago… :(

        • I've needed to reinstall several times on Win XP/7. On launch, none of the menus were accessible.

On those occasions, it's good to backup the analysis results folder in Application Data. Then move those back after new install. This way if you need to make another backup of an original disc, you save analysis time.

          Then again, who cares?

        • Was it something you said?

        • @Speckled Jim:

          It doesn't even launch anymore.

          Reinstalling didn't make a difference.

        • @jv: this could be the problem, install one of the programs that Amar89 mentions, then reinstall WinX DVD Ripper Platinum in to the same directory, then uninstall WinX DVD Ripper Platinum with the uninstaller program, then reinstall and it should work.
          Hope this helps :).

          @Wystri Warrick:

WinX DVD Ripper works fine, it's DVDShrink that no longer works on Windows 10.

        • @jv: ah right, well the same should do it.

    • I made so many backups! Now I don't even know or care where they are :(

  • +8

The irony of a licenced product which removes the licensing on other products. What a time to be alive.

  • how safe is ripping dvds? the dvds I see play a warning of copyright violation and it seems the government and copyright holders will prosecute even little ole ladies to get their pound of flesh.

If you copy a DVD the Department of Homeland Security will target you as a clear and present danger to the United Stated of America.

@Jannie - can you do the same deal for the Blu Ray ripper? :)

    • I'm afraid that Blu-ray ripper is not supported. Sorry to let you down. :(
