It's basically a repeat of this deal but with a ~$800 phone included as well (on 24 months instead of 12 month term).

Compared to this $49/month JB BYO deal, you are paying an extra $240 over the 24 months and giving up $200 JB gift card & 5GB of data; however you are getting a $600-$900ish phone included instead.

If you value the Galaxy S8 at $800 (I think the cheapest deal we saw was $799 for Bing Lee) then you are paying $640 over 24 months for the 15GB contract = $26.66/month which seems like a great deal on the Telstra network and also no upfront cost required. That's probably the best value there since the Pixel XL and iPhone 6s are older models but they are options for Apple users or someone not wanting to go down the Samsung path.

    Just switched both of my JBHIFI deals across ($400 JB Vouchers for 2 months service :D ). Lost 5gb of data in the data pool (40GB down to 35GB) and it's a 24 month contract which I didn't want, but at this price I'd be stupid not too.

    I'll sell one S8 (the wife already has a Note 8) and I'll keep the S8 for myself. Puts me way ahead overall.

        • Yeah it wont last until Christmas, But some of those phones are pretty old/average being offered. I mean the IPhone 6s is like 2 generations ago now. They will also want to move on the S8 with the S9 coming in a few months. Just like how optus had the S7 with 7gig for $54 a month around this time last year and JB HI FI had the S6 the year before around this time for $600 buy out. There are also many people on long contracts who can't take up the deal, my mum for instance is on the S7 optus deal from last year which still has 11 months to run. I'm assuming she would be out $300-$400 if she wanted to pay the ETC (which she would refuse to do).

          S8 might be 8 months old, but it's also still using the same CPU as most new phones. So you could say it's still a current phone. Sure it will be replaced with a new model in March/April but you're no worse off than buying a Pixel 2, V30, 5T etc. All use the same 835 CPU and have 4-6GB Ram.

          But I do see what you're saying… For me I'll keep the S8 for a year or so and then grab an outright phone to finish out the contract.

    I was with telstra chat and they advised me to call 132200. However the lady on the phone was so rude and I was told if I am not staff not eligible to get this offer
    I went to the store and signed up(re contracted from 59 BYO plan FROM JB HIFI) ordered S8 for 59 however my data allowance down to 15GB.the guy tried to increase it to 20GB. He was not sure that will go through or not.

        She was angry about I called the support third time. I agree that they were not aware of the deal completely but that wan no reason to be rude.
        Any way I got the deal done at local telstra shop.

      • I signed up with Telstra a couple of months ago on that gift card deal. I just had to ask if I could upgrade my BYO plan to this current one via live chat. I did have to speak to a couple of operators however I got there in the end. Don't give up! Couldn't land the extra 5gb, but a brand new phone to replace my horrible Iphone 6s, can't go wrong!

      • I sure did, so in theory I get a $200 gift card & a free Samsung galaxy s8 but lose 5gb. Guess I'll just have to be proactive and download my music onto my new phone instead of streaming it everyday.

  • If anyone who wants to upgrade the BYO plan is better walk in local telstra store and talk to them, they are very helpful, but call the 132200 number, most of time is oversea Indian answering the phone, the service is big different :(

    • You can go into a telstra shop and get your mobile number changed onto a consumer platform Whitch takes a few days. (Bring 100 points of ID.) then you can get this F&F deal.

      • are u saying that I could put an order under my personal name first? AFter activated and all working fine, go to telstra shop to transfer the account to my ABN ?

      ok turns out they are cancelling all online orders unless you can provide a friend's/staff name at telstra.

    • That happened to me and it was because they wanted 3 forms of ID, proof of employment and a utility bill to be brought in store.

    I spent all day trying to get the best deal for this. JB-HiFi rep couldn't give me the 20gb, so I went to Telstra Store who were flat out and basically told me to go away unless I knew someone who worked at Telstra.

    So I went on the Sales chat twice, both said they couldn't do it. I tried calling the number the 2nd gave me, but was on hold for 30mins.

    After pure frustration, I tried a THIRD time on chat. This time, SUCCESS. However, Rep could only apply the additional 5GB AFTER I placed an order. So I did online, however he said the order "hadn't gone through yet". I asked if I could cancel the online order and went to JB-HiFi if I could apply the data then. He assured me yes. I made him place a note on my account, saved the transcript record, and went to straight to JB. He helped me, after laughing. All sorted now with a brand new S8 and 20GB (I had to go back onto chat later and gave them the Interaction Record).

    TLDR: Only some sales rep will apply extra 5GB AFTER you've ordered. :)

    - Got the $200 JB voucher the other week
    - Changed to the F&F offer with the extra 5GB via the online chat
    - $105 Cashrewards tracked.

      Also every time i've asked to upgrade to f&F via chat they said yes its possible but you need to call the sales number

      • Maybe it was just luck. I said to the rep that i was interested in signing up to the F&F deal but the only thing holding me back was the 5GB. She just said to let her know the order number once I'd finished the sign up process online and she would apply it.

          @julz15: yep got a SMS that my order stopped and i called up to enquire.
          then i tried ordering again via online chat and got told straight up that need to do in store as its another team that processes these friend and family offers manually so cant be done via chat.
          im heading to jbhifi tomorrow to get it done on the spot and hopefulyl walk out with new phone.

    On online chat they waived the termination fee from my BYO telstra (friends and family $49 12gb plan) and added the 5GB after I mentioned that there was a JB hifi deal that offered 20GB etc. Worked first try!

    Just got a message saying my order has been cancelled.

    Went into the chat and they said I need to do it inside and provide ID and proof of employment…

    Not sure why. Anyone else have this issue ?

    • Yes, went in this morning and cleared things up.

      Edit: Provided license, passport, bank card + payslip + utility bill

    Say a browser popup said you where offered 5gb bonus data if you speak to sales.

      I submitted my order yesterday afternoon - three live chat agents said no to the 5GB bonus, prior to me submitting the order.

      I then tried again after submitting the order and after some brief back and forth with the Live chat agent, they agreed to. All I said was that the pop up 5gb bonus appeared when I was signing up so I discussed it with a live chat agent and they told me to ask for it AFTER I had submitted the order.

    Update: Just got email confirmation of order, hopefully Cashrewards will track as well.

    They asked if I was a customer and I said my wife used to be.

  • Just signed up as well. Pop up windows offered 5GB. Chat with agent and told them that I'm with TPG and got it booted up to 20GB.
    Also activate the Cashreward plugin on Telstra page and can see the Telstra in click history.

    Left with the plan, however wasn't able to get a $10 porting discount or extra 5gb

    • which JB? I haven't received any text messages from Telstra so hoping my order goes through. Otherwise will have to head to JB during the week. Were you a previous Telstra customer? wondering why they cancelled your online order in the first place.

        They cancelled it because they couldnt confirm my identity with the ID I used (passport number).

        Went into jb with driver's licence and Medicare card and got everything done in the spot.

        No not a Telstra customer.

    Just signed up online. 15gb and got the extra 5gb data applied, per month.

    Live chat rep sent me a link to sign up and once completed i provided the order number to apply the additional 5gb.

  • Just tried again. Guy told me my order is in pending status and to chat again in 24 hrs to have the 5gbs applied.

  • I always thought BYO plans were separate from the phone repayments, I'm wondering if you wanted to change to another telstra plan later (if it offered more date etc) if you would have to pay out the phone contract?

    Okay, I am going to share my experience with everyone here as people have shared their good experiences with us to get a better bargain.

    So maybe a month ago I went into JB Hifi to take up the their $59 Sim only plan down to $49 if you port from another carrier to take advantage of the $200 giftcard, and I was happy. Now after someone has posted the Telstra Friends and family offer for $59 with a 15gb a month with a new Phone, I thought that wasn't a bad deal, as I was reading into people's comments having luck with getting an additional 5gb added to sweeten the offer, I tried my luck with Online chat only to be denied twice. In the end I still ended up going for the 15GB instead and signed up online and was given a confirmation number. Anyway I thought I would give it another shot at requesting another 5gb with the online chat, and voila, the rep asked for my confirmation number and personal details and she added it via chat.

    So don't give up via chat as they will do it for you. And and she also confirmed that there will be no penalty for re-contracting from my 12 month sim only plan that I signed up with JB hifi.

    Hopefully this helps with other's who are still on the fence on this one.

      Just scored the Tech21 Evo wallet for mine. History isn't good with this case though. 2 pins break, but JB replace it under warranty. My old s5 evo wallet was awesome, but this new one has a very dubious track record. Have complained to Tech21 as my son has gone through 2 of them with the same issue. Still, it's the style I wanted so…..Interestingly, when I was in at Samsung getting a replacement charging cable, all the staff had…..yep, Tech21 cases on their own gear. :)

    Has anyone visted Telstra store to verify their ID (3xproof, utility bill and pay slip)? How long did the process take? I'm going tomorrow and was wondering if I can just start a new application so I can get the device on the spot.

  • I really want to get this offer, my brother works for Telstra. But in 24mths 15GB will not be enough and I don't want to pay to get out of the contract.
