      https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-failure-rates-q3-2…

Reliability has improved on larger drives across the board.

      • Fair enough, somehow I missed that one. It also ties into my own experiences with Seagate, all of them have failed. Of course, YMMV. Personally, I'm a bit iffy with such large capacity drives being mechanical. It still makes me wonder why the failure rate for Seagates are so high. Lower quality parts maybe? They are generally the cheapest from what i've seen.

        • Last two WDs ive gotten have had power supply issues. Both the cheapest I could find at the time

        • All hard drive fails. Its better to design for failure and buy the cheapest components you can.

You can spend more on Enterprise or NAS or more reliable brand but you will not get any guarantee that the drive won't fail.

  • even though the hdd says backup, can you use it for storage instead?

    • Yes you can.

  • Do I need to buy something else to use the nas drive?

10 TB FTW /O/ , thats what i have right now

  • Has anyone actually purcahsed the 10tb Ironwolf ?

I did some research and by god, the seek db's are just as bad as having a WD BLACK edition drive hitting around 39-40db, BLACK edition being around 41db so if your looking at lowering noise then i guess the Seagate is not a good option as i originally thought it was going to be.

I currently have the WD BLACK 4TB and was thinking of selling it and upgrading the the Seagate 10TB NAS version as its suppose to be quieter with sacrifice of speed.

However after this recent research im not sure i want to do this now. My black is LOUDDDDDDD, when its going of… its like GRRRR GRRR HRRRRRRRRRRR RRRRRRR

Can anyone confirm if this is also the case in the Ironwolf 10TB ?

    • Maybe your PC is too close, air vents directed at you or cheap case with vibration & bad dampening? I have a WD Black 3TB & its not quiet but not louder than the odd fan noise. Am also interested in the 10TB for a raid setup.

      • Def not a cheap setup, its about 3 months old, and running NZXT case with liquid cooling and high end fans, the only sound i hear is the HDD lol… and its loud compared to anything else in the case…. 41db is pretty loud and going from what i read the Ironwolf if abut 38db when seeking.
