  • Sorry to be a dunce, but what do people use gimbles on their phones for? Is it just like a glorified selfie stick?

I get why they would be used for "proper" camera equipment & obviously on drones but who is attaching them to their phone?

    • -1

For stabilisation to take the bounce and jerkiness out of footage.

      • I get their function, I am just wondering how often that function is relevant for phone footage.

        • I use it for slow mo video of my little one. It is quite useful in that sense but as always you gotta put a little bit of work into it. Using an iPhone SE with Filmic Pro app, edit it in Premiere Pro CC with some colour grading chucked on top - voila, cinematic looking footage :))

        • There's many uses - Arguably it works "better" than the Image stabilisation on the device but really can work in conjunction with it. It will take much better low-ISO night shots without the need for a tripod. Not sure how well it will work with SLRs that this is made for though.

I use it mainly for travel videos. It's not a glorified selfie stick. You can attach a GoPro or a phone to the smaller gimbals like the Smooth Q.

So as an example, I didn't have a large gimbal for my travel and larger camera so I ended up shooting videos using my Samsung s8 (which is actually pretty good!) and my DJI Spark which has stabilised footage. It gives you the smooth movements when you walk/run, pan etc.

Example of a video with a message mobile phone gimbal: https://youtu.be/Xo35sxzeK14
Any land based shots were done using a Samsung s8, overhead shots with a DJI Spark and one underwater shot with a GoPro Hero 5.

      • That's a damn impressive video. I was actually thinking I needed a Mavic to get that level of quality, but the Spark does a sensational job. Good to know.

        • Powerful little drone it is.. always amazed what it can do

      • Wow! That was beautiful!

      • Nice Video - makes me want to go to Iceland

Definitely go. One of the most amazing countries we've been to

    • Cheap gimbal for phone/action cam. Expensive gimbal for digital camera. I believe the camera shakes for every single step you make in filming, doesnt matter phone or DSLR.

If you do not use your camera walking (interview, blog, indoor filming) then gimbal is useless. Dont buy it if you feel you never needed one in the first place.

It isnt 2005 anymore. Image and video quality in flagship phones is very good and easily comparable to digital cameras and even rival dslrs under certain conditions (deep dof daylight shots, 4k with no over heating etc).

      • I tend to agree with this statement. Tech has come a long way.

This is not the cheapest it has been. It has been $483.65 before from eglobal just in October.

Notice that this is not the 2nd generation Zhiyun Crane. The 2nd generation is recently released and supports 500g to 3200g. This is the first gen which supports 350g to 1800g. The V2 in the title is a bit misleading.

    • It might be 'misleading' but that's the manufacturers fault.

There is a Crane version 1 (V1) and a Crane version 2 (V2) as well as a Crane 2. Some places have been calling it Crane 1 V2 and Crane 2 (I don't know if that is an improvement)

The Crane V2 has some minor update to the V1, including changing from 18650 to 26650 batteries, a sliding plate for mounting the camera and improved ergonomics on the controls. Have a look herefor a review video.

"Almost NO ONE HAS BOTHERED TO GET a Smooth Q gimbal for their phones"

Fixed it for you. Marketing BS.

  • Will this hold a Canon G7X II and a Sony A6500?

    • If you click on the view deal button it will take you to the zapals page which has example footage shot with an a6500

This v2 I've seen from YouTube videos will actually support with no issues the bugger cameras like the Canon 5D. The new Crane 2 us double the price which is making me consider this.

Wow, great price, I sold my used v1 on gumtree for $500 2 weeks ago.

  • Looks like these come with a pelican style case according to the listing on bhphotovideo.

Crane v2 is 549 USD on bhphotovideo.

    Crane 2 is 749 USD on bhphotovideo…

People pay this much for a selfie stick? really?

    • +1

Haha it's for videos not for selfies. Think wedding videographers
