    lol

these are super easy to open without knowing the code

    • They're still meant to be hidden in the first place.

If people find where my lock box is located they deserve the keys inside it lol.

    • Wanna share? No? Ok then.

    • Damn!

I've had one of these next to my front door for a ground level apartment in inner city Melbourne for years and never had a problem

Now that it's lack of security is exposed on ozbargain I better go remove the keys from it immediately

I believe you could get the unbranded one for around $21 from HK

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Safety-Key-Lock-Box-4-Digit-Pass…

    • Yep, bought a couple of these generics a few years ago for around $17ea. Tough, excellent build quality and smooth wheel operation but as per 'Toobs link above they can be opened relatively easily… but only after they've been found :)

  • The button version is relatively more difficult to "guess" the codes.
Maybe button version is worth the premium?

Both does the job; hide it well

Do you really trust your doormat?

As a locksmith, I would prefer my doormat over anything made by Master Lock…

At best, this is a transfer lock box. Ie: leaving the keys for someone coming later in the day, not for permanent key storage.

      Can you make any recommendations?

I have been looking at getting a Master lock push button key safe from Bunnings.
      https://www.bunnings.com.au/master-lock-select-access-push-b…
Or the equivalent in wall mounted.
      Thanks.

Can't get them in Oz. I got mine a few years ago from Amazon US for about $35. Single dial like on a safe is apparently more secure then push buttons or a set of disc combo lock. This has metal all around it, so if they sledgehammer it off the wall, they will need an angle grinder to open it.

I've give the code to family and some trades people and they still can't open it. So really only good if you have locked yourself out :)

Actually my brother in law was able to follow my instructions and open it…

In this price bracket, no. But remember, you get what you pay for. If your house security is only worth $39, then you will get $39 worth of protection. These boxes take about 60 seconds to defeat or even quicker if you have the right tools that are easily made.

As I said, I would not use anything by Master Lock. If you just must have an outside lock box, then make sure it is hard to find and hidden from sight from the street. I would go for a push button style one over a dial one.

My absolute recommendation is if you have a habit of locking yourself out or of needing to give access to others, then I would look at electric locking systems. NFC/RFID/biometric/Bluetooth/WiFi/PIN number access door locks. This will give you access any time you need it without the requirement of having to leave a key outside. Sure, they are worth more than $39, but they offer more features and a metric s#%t tonne of security over a lock box.

As I said, lock boxes are not a bad idea for short term key storage, but I would not rely on them to permanently store keys outside…

        • We have an electronic lock for the front door and they are great. If you have a housekeeper or need to provide short term access you can setup a code and then wipe it whenever you want to. Ours works with MYKI cards, as long as they are preconfigured in the lock. They aren’t the cheapest option and I would be concerned if they were exposed to the weather, ours is protected by an alcove. There are also ones with override physical keys, which we are now considering in case the lock electronics fails completely. There are external battery terminals in case of just battery failure. It also allows you to give people a code remotely so you don’t need to physically hand over a key, e.g. Air bnb, feed my pet please, etc.

        • Could you provide some specific examples?

      • Not designed for absolute outdoor use however I just bought a couple of these mini-safes for $25.39ea: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SECURITY-HOME-OFFICE-DIGITAL-ELE… They're just generic cheapies but a 'brand-name' version seems to get good reviews on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Homegear-Electronic-Passport-Office-C…

'As is' they can easily be opened by tapping the top while turning the knob OR by poking something through the mounting hole at the back and pressing the PIN reset button at the back of the door… however once properly mounted the risk via these methods is greatly minimised. The cylinder lock is slightly more difficult to pick than a standard lock but again this is just a cheap safe so may take 3 seconds instead of 2 seconds to pick ;)

Might see how one of these goes mounted up out of view and out of the elements bolted to a floor joist or something. May also be good mounted to the inside of an outdoor storage cabinet or something too. May be another option for some here anyway.

  • Hmmmm. I might put my spare garage remote in it and then hide my spare house key in the garage.
