A few dollars more than last time but good if you've been holding out for an existing subscription to expire and need to buy soon. You have 30 days to redeem if you want to squeeze out every last minute.

It's a given with PIA deals that you need to create a new account each time. It's no big deal (heh) and much cheaper than renewing.

AUD price shown is based on PayPal. Pay in USD using 28 Degrees, Citibank, BankWest etc to save another dollar or two.

I've been using these for a couple of years, very good.

    • Second this.

  • +2

I suggest waiting for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals

    • +2

Not sure what you're basing this on.

Last Black Friday with coupons was $25.50 for one year which is 4 cents more expensive per year.

The last time this same price was posted it gained 199 votes. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/302881

As I already noted, the most recent deal was in fact a few dollars cheaper and I also said this deal is "good if you've been holding out for an existing subscription to expire and need to buy soon".

      • +1

But for those sales last year this wasn't true: "It's a given with PIA deals that you need to create a new account each time."

I'll wait until the PIA (as opposed to Groupon) deals so I don't have to muck around creating a new account.

  • Does it stack?… Social? EDIT: I didn't read the first line, don't bomb me :(

  • +2

Great deal, been using them ever since the scare… no issues.

  • +5

Works well, doesn't help with US / UK Netflix though. :'(

    • +1

Getflix is perfect for that and is super cheap

      • can you use Getflix as a normal VPN on-line as well, are speeds okay?

        • Yes you can, the license includes the VPN and smart DNS services as a bundle. But their VPN speeds are slow. They have a fair few servers but it's too slow so I don't use their VPN, just have it as a backup.

      • +1

        how do i get getflix?

      • After the recent crackdown, getflix only works via the browser. None of the other Netflix apps work for now.

        • -1

err nope, maybe just your situation.

        • +1

@eediot: Are you able to access Netflix from any other device? Can you please elaborate? The below is from their website and that is what I am experiencing:

          https://www.getflix.com.au/netflix-update

          "Netflix Updates
Currently US Netflix is only supported on computer browsers. We don't have any ETA for other devices at this time. We are working to make other devices available as quickly as possible."

        • @mikstylo: Netflix app on my S8 phone casted to a Chromecast on my Samsung TV. Tested 5 minutes ago watching The Final Master which is apparently not available on Netflix Australia.

Tried setting up the static routes?

    • +1

Agreed on this FabMan, specifically netflix support got cut and was stuck for another 11 months with the VPN. (Mostly bought it for that reason, however the VPN to global connections did work properly)

    • Never used UK or US Netflix.

Is there that much of a difference to the Aus Netflix? Enough to pay for getflix?

      • US Netflix has more movies than us. They have 4500 movies, while we have 1500.

  • +1

Dumb question here, since the company seem to be based on US what would happen if the net neutrality bill have passed on US? Would the service be shut down or something?

    • Net neutrality in the immediate short term is something that would affect only users of US ISPs. In the longer term, infrastructure that Australians use to get to sites in the USA may become affected.

You can basically see this as the beginning of "toll roads" on the superhighway by infrastructure providers.

      • Meanwhile almost the entire world including Australia is using the internet with zero net neutrality protections and everything's fine.

  • Hows speed? Dont really do anything of note needing a vpn but the privacy is always welcome

    • +1

I don't find any speed loss when turned on using my connection when testing in the range of 0-75 megabits per second

    • +2

      No issues.

    • No major speed issues for me for the last 3 years

      • Are you guys using an Aus server or overseas one? My speeds were terrible recently when trying PIA..
        Thanks.

        • Aus

    • our Aussie internet isn't fast enough to hit the peak speeds

  • Thanks OP, almost two years exactly since the last two-year deal! Perfect timing.

  • +6

i have used PIA and they provide a great service…..but they are within a country that is part the 5 eyes global security, so if they we required to give up their records they would as they would have to.
NordVPN is a better option if true security is what you are looking for.

    • I thought the whole point of their privacy policy was that they don't keep any records.

    • They don't keep any logs, and pretty sure they have said they would shut down if they were forced to.

    • +1

They don't keep logs. It was tested in court by a subpoena by the FBI link

    • +1

I moved from PIA to Nord (when my PIA expired and Nord had 2 years for $72).

I heard good things about them, but am less than impressed with NordVPN
      * Their SOCKS5 ( at least used to) be very dodgy, had to keep changing the server name to get one that worked (though it has been stable the last month or so).
      * Today NordVPN informed me that my 2 year plan had finished despite there being over 1 year left, i had to contact support and get it fixed up, though it cost them a lot of credibility in my books, i doubt i will stay with them when my 2 years are up, hopefully i can find a good deal in november next year with a better provider.

  • +2

Everyone jump on this.. so you're not on the vpn I use ;)

    • +1

Which VPN do you use? ;)

  • Thank you, my subscription expires in 27 days, just in time. I've also got 10% voucher code from Stacksocial on top.

  • Doesn't work with Netflix and for that I am out.

    • +1

It does, make sure you are connected to US silicon valley and it'll work. I use it myself.

  • Just wondering, what you guys use VPN for? Torrenting?

    • I do for that…

      PIA is good for that..

im on 100mbs NBN and via PIA VPN I get 60mbs

      • Which server are you using to get those speeds? Local Australian ones? I have never managed much more than 5mb/s with PIA on any of the servers I have tested. To be fair I haven't really stress tested it lately though.

        • Yes, the Melbourne server.

        • Same here, always get a max of 5mb/s with PIA on torrents…

    • +8

Just basic privacy principles really. When the local council, the RSPCA, Harness Racing NSW, and the Victorian Taxi Services Commission have warrantless access to your browsing history there is a big, big problem.

It’s a shame and counterproductive in that it’s driving people to use VPNs. I have nothing to hide and have no problem with court ordered release of records provided it’s for genuine reasons like counterterrorism and used in privacy-appropriate ways. You know, like not accessible by the Victorian Taxi Commission…….

      • +1

Stay away from Uber and the taxi commissioner is your friend :P

  • +1

Has anyone use PIA in China recently? I am going there for a month and am looking for a fast and stable VPN. I heard from my friend that ExpressVPN (which used to be my first choice) is not working anymore.

    • +1

set up your private vps and use shadowsocksr is your only option

      • even shadowsocks is being targetted - my vultr VPN isn't very reliable now a days.

        • +3

shadowsocksr is better than shadowsocks, mine has been great throughout the congress

        • +1

@qwertyaz: thanks - i had my VPS set up with streisand

    • Used it last week - terrible. I am not sure if that is because the 4G connection (roaming via Telstra) was terrible anyway on my iphone, but it was unusable. It was also unusable (slow - timing out) using the hotel wifi via my Surfacepro and ipad 10.5. The HK server seemed to be the closest so I manually tried connecting to that - didn't make a difference.

In the end I turned it off and didn't use it, wechat is better than facebook messenger anyway.

    • Good question, I'm heading to Beijing next year and I need a good VPN. Damn Commies destroy all the VPNs :)

    • There's meant to be a VPN that cloaks itself to to appear as normal traffic. Look up chameleon VPN.

    • +1

Can confirm PIA was not working in the areas I visited last month (Anhui, Shandong and Beijing). ExpressVPN worked like a charm!

    • +1

PIA is terrible in China! When I was in China for 2 months, I had to purchase a subscription from another VPN provider because it was almost impossible to connect to PIA.

You're better off with smaller VPN providers that the government won't target directly such as IronSocket

https://stacksocial.com and all the similar companies have had this deal for at least 6 months…
    https://www.androidauthority.com/private-internet-access-vpn…

  • How does this compare to PureVPN?

  • Perfect timing!!
My year just finished up along with the 7 day cooling off.
Now this discount is exactly what I needed. I was about to buy this without the coupon! Thanks so much OP!!
+ I payed with a Citibank Card! WINNING!

  • Bought. My subscription with IPVANISH was due to expire in a week or so. And the they are wanting $77 per year.

  • How is this compare to nordvpn ? Anyone know ?

  • Have been looking for a VPN to use whilst I travel oversaeas and need to do work on a public wifi connection just for some extra security. Is this a fast VPN option? I haven't started researching into options yet but the price is attractive.

  • Juat bought nordvpn and can't get a fast enough connection to UK or US server to stream video

  • Thanks OP!! Mine was 57 days from expiring but this will do just fine!

  • They are stable, but wish they didn't limit torrent traffic to 5MBps…also the Asian servers are super slow, so if you are going to Japan or HK or Taiwan, it will be crawling…

  • PIA has been super slow in recent days via USA servers
