On a side note, I really don't get why tapes/mixers are so damn expensive in this country. I have bought numbers of mixers(>5) for my houses from China over the years for a fraction of the costs locally. They are either full SS or brass and of equal or better quality comparing to local supply.

An example, a kitchen mixer, I bought for $65, is the top of the line from the Chinese manufacturer. It is full SS inside and out and has tall stem and ball joint at the top for flexible direction. It looks stunning. The equivalent one from Bunnings or Reece is >$300.

Can anyone tell me why? This is a serious question.

By the way, China uses metric fittings. So anything mixer-wise is a direct fit to Aussie pipes.

Because its Australia (ie. Because they can)

      • Needs a Watermark on it too. Kind of reminds me of the whole AS sticker debacle for motorbike helmets until common sense prevailed.

I understand the whole Aussie tax thing or whatnot. I hate to say that double the price is even considered to be 'fair' down under. But the mixers are at least 5 times over.
You are right, they just can… It is sad.

its due partly to the 'wedding costs' syndrome. You dont replace mixers often, I mean the ones I use have a 10-20yr plus life.

So they charge what they want because people dont have a ballpark price (generally).

Also its because high end italian or european stuff DOES cost this much so Bunnings just buys China stuff and tries to price it at euro levels.

I get it - even if you add import duty local distruibutor costs and GST it still doesnt add up but hey, how does bunnings afford huge premises and staff and whatnot.

        • @tonyjzx: good thing is Amazon decided to come and will be shaking things up very soon. Bunnings will have to up their game or go the way of masters.

        • @KangaBanga:

I'm hoping you're right however as a contractor, one of the best things about bunnings is that you have fuss free returns so if you buy the wrong stuff or surplus you can return it.

Amazon would be much more difficult.

ALso there are mixers in the sub $50 range from bunnings that are 'fit for purpose'.

        • @KangaBanga: Well, maybe for people know what they are looking for without seeing the physical products or the need to talk to someone to get advice, this is what you pay Bunnings type of brick and mortar stores for. People whinge about no service but they want it dirt cheap too, businesses have to earn enough to cover those costs. Amazon suits some customers but for myself I prefer to buy from Bunnings for this kind of products just saying.

        • thats fair enough but the 'advice' doesnt justify 3x 4x 5x pricing…

my question then would be that does it justify that '2x' pricing that someone above said is 'fair' and even then, is it 'fair' or just the battered wife syndrome

@sistermay: this is the kind of consumer mindset which allows the majors to get away with overpricing things.

You could probably trust advice your local small shop owner, but bunnings is no longer that, you cant be sure they dont upsell you. e.g. staff will point you towards Ryobi stuff ;D

@tonyjzx : Amazon has free returns for people who buy things to try out like clothes, shoes etc. I dont see why this wont be extended to other items.

Amazon bought whole foods in USA to get into the retail scene and are trialling cashless/cardless grocery shopping already. I dont see why they wont buy up Bunnings to get into the home/construction sector.

        • @tonyjzx:

" Advice " from the team members are not useful most of the time. I better google it in the store.

Any tips of manufacturers / websites to look at (knowing absolutely zero about Chinese faucet companies).

      • it would help if you can read Chinese. Taobao.com can do local collect in some selected cities now.But it is still hard to navigate for average Aussie.

No Australia uses BSP British Standard Pipe Thread fittings not metric.

    • I once bought a kitchen mixer on clearance from a local shop and they said is greatly reduced because the manufacturer is unable to offer local plumbing support in case it malfunctions under warranty.
Well it did malfunction, so I had to contact their office in Sydney who sent me the inner spindle that I had to replace myself. Worked fine after that.

    • Can you please share links to those mixers. Thank you.

  • Is it a basin mixer or sink mixer? The photo and the model number look like a sink mixer.

    • Best i can tell the sku code matches the sink mixer not the basin mixer. I am after a basin mixer. Please clarify.

Hansa Vantis Sink Mixer sku code is 524822030037

Hansa Vantis Basin Mixer sku code is 524222770037

  • How about quality? I am not saying some prices are not outrageous. Some mixer tap becomes quite jerky to operate after some time but some last much longer. It really annoys me. Can anyone tell me if the more expensive ones are really better in this regard?

Last time I got a kitchen sink mixer from Ikea and it became quite jerky after a few months. Then a few more months, it leaks from the middle of the stem! Brought it back and exchanged a new one. It has been over 2 years since then and it's still smooth enough to operate… Just hit and miss?

    • Hansa is one of the better brands.

      • My Hansa Stella mixer leaks from the handle after a few years and the same happened to my Frankie mixer while the Ikea Italian-made sink mixer I bought on special for $79 still works fine after years of constant use everyday.

  • Can't add to cart. I'm in Victoria.
