    • Updated sorry!

  • Great way to waste water…

    these things should be banned…

    • Well if thats the case we should ban toilets they waste the most water. We recommend that you recycle the waste water for other uses like watering the garden or the lawn.

      • i don't know about you, but i don't drink toilet water….

these things waste your 'drinking' water !!! They should be banned

        • No usually people dont drink toilet water but we do flush water down the toilet everytime you use the toilet.

        • what does flushing a toilet have to do with wasting drinking tap water?

        • I don't get it. How do these waste water :\
EDIT: Saw the link with the picture. It should have a waste catcher built in it. But still, it is a waste. And i agree with JV

  • A question.

Why would someone want one of these systems over a cheaper charcoal filter?

Aside from the price a RO system only gives you 5 to 15 percent of the water which it takes in.

So to get a 250ml glass of water you will use anywhere between 1.7 and 5 litres.

Not forgetting that we are living on the driest country on earth.

    • Charcoal filters are a filter like you said this is a purification system which removes bacteria parasites etc your charcoal filter are generally for chlorine, taste and odour depending on micron rating. In terms of waste we have system running at a ratio of a approx 1:1, 1 litre of pure water and 1 litre of waste. Waste water can be captured and re used.

  • what kind of system is this, i thought purification means it cleans the water. Why does it need to waste water?

  • What do you do with the waste water?

    • Just use it in the garden etc. There's nothing 'toxic' about it.

  • I used to live in the states and these types of filters were pretty popular. In fact, I shared a flat and there was one of these installed, and the technology is indeed pretty good - can filter out a lot of contaminants, etc… In fact, if you were living in a developing country (in which you could not safely drink from the tap) I wouldn't hesitate to trust these.

However, I was not aware of the water wastage. In a dry country such as ours, I grew up with pretty high water efficiency out of necessity and I cannot with clear conscience use one of these now. Besides, I even grew up drinking out of the tap water and these days everyone uses one of those brita filters - all marketing I suppose.

So, perhaps it is a good deal, but I won't use these.

    • at least the Brita filters don't waste water…

…anyway, at least for Melbourne, why would you bother filtering the tap water?

      Adelaide, well that's a different story though… :P

  • Just to clarify, This system and most under sink reverse osmosis units have auto shut off valves which shuts off the system when the storage tank is full. This prevents water constantly going to waste. As mentioned above waste water can be recycled and re used. Everyone has a right to choose whether or not they want to consume chemicals found in water and so they choose to filter there water for self satisfaction.

    • yes and everyone also has a responsibility to look after their environment and not unnecessarily waste resources…

  • +1

I thought osmosis was something to do with leaning information while sleeping ?

You know.. like an audio tape/mp3 you run over night… and you wake up and can speak Spanish :)

  • Good deal. If I had the money free I might consider it. I would prefer to knock back my water usage by 50% and have it filtered than to use the water now which contains a cocktail of compounds. Not that it will kill you, melbourne and other cities are regarded to be have some of the worlds highest quality water, but there is still some possible dangers with the toxic chloramines and fluoride that that are added in low doses to water to treat it.
You can always further process the water, but pretty soon it becomes so salty it should be thrown away (or left in the sun and used for popcorn!)

The advantage of these types of units is that they work on the pressure of the mains water alone, rather than the standard pump.
