The free hotel policy mentions a lot of other transit airports in addition to Xi'an and Changsha. Is it possible to get a transfer through a different airport when flying out of Australia? For example, is it possible to fly from Melbourne to Beijing and transfer through Shanghai?

    • Probably not at these prices. You'd have to do a multi city and probably not worth it. Haven't seen them pair connections with anything other than Xi'an and Changsha.

Can you access the "real" internet over there, or only the communist Chinese censored version?

    • +1

      Censored I think.

      • -7

I'd rather spend my country visiting a country that doesn't oppress it's peoples.

        • +2

I was there for a month from one of the first Hainan deals, the people didnt look oppressed.

        • @MrZ: In North Korea, where you can go is tightly controlled. Not so in China. I went to some places off the beaten track, most people were happy, friendly and very helpful even though I only knew to say hello and thank you in Chinese.

        • +5

Great to hear I won't be seeing ignorant, narrow-minded people like you when I visit China next year.

        • +2

You are the typical brainwashed people by media. Have you ever been to China? LOL

        • -1

Your ignorance made me laugh a little, keep it up.

        • -1

It's amazing how quickly people can forget the '89 massacre. I bet when you go to China, there's no mention of it all, as if it never happened, right? Their citizens probably can't even read about it due to the censorship there.

        • +3

@MrZ: Its amazing how quickly people can forget the Tasmanian massacres. Or that Indigenous people were classified as wild animals till a few years ago. Strange how no one talks about these things here, as if it never happened, right?

        • -1

          @laser:

We don't pretend these things never happened, though. They also didn't occur 30 years ago, either.

        • -1

          @laser:

So did the Premier/President/Government of China apologise to the victims of the Tiananmen massacre\Cultural Revolutuion\Great Leap Forward*insert PRC atrocity* like Rudd did to the Aborigines in 2008?

          Yeah didn't think so.

I don't believe all Chinese people feel that they are oppressed, but you've got to be kidding me if you think the PRC government doesn't oppress it's citizens in anyway.

I have friends who were detained at the HK/Shenzhen border and questioned by MSS/PSB because of what they've written on Facebook in the past.

        • +3

@ironpaw: It took nearly two centuries for the apology, so in the fullness of time I believe there will be an apology for Tian An Men in that sort of timeframe

        • -1

          @laser:

Hopefully in 200 years time the PRC will have transitioned into a democratic government…

        • @laser:

"Or that Indigenous people were classified as wild animals till a few years ago."

Correct - in that, until the 1960s, Aboriginals couldn't vote in free democratic elections. In 2017, the Chinese still can't do this!

    • +2

Yes, but it is censored slightly more "than" the monarchist uk censorship regime.

    • +2

You can use a VPN to get around it, or I just bought one of these, hoping it works. https://www.travelgear.com.au/china-unicom-hong-kong-and-chi…

just like you get "real" internet in Australia?

    • +8

Well, at least its faster than NBN there.

    • +3

If banning me from visiting only a few websites, but giving 3-5 times faster and cheaper Internet for exchange, oh yes I'll take that.

      • yes, only a few websites, but includes Google, gmail, facebook and twitter.

    How about from Sydney?

    • I think you can fly to Changsha or Xi'an for $450 but none of the 2 stops with hotels. Specials page.

    • There is 'capital airline' which is a subsidiary of Hainan airline. They run a few routes from Sydney, might be worth checking.

      • note that capital is an LCC like Jetstar if you don't mind paying extra for luggage or so

  • Has anyone used the free hotel transfer at Changsha. Was it easy/hard to find where to go? Which hotel were you put up in? Have booked for next week but can not find any info on line of others experiences or what to do when landed at Changsha.

    • Overnight transit hotels are arranged by ground staff on arrival, if you cant find the ground staff, just head to their transit desk.

    • I have used the free hotel transfer. You need to go a desk on the ground floor called Hotel Bookings and just show them boarding pass from previous flight and booking for next flight and passport. They put you on a bus that takes you to the hotel. Its 2 people to a room

    • Great. Thanks for that. Was hotel in Changsha or near airport?

      • Very close to airport. Opposite to airport is the Airport staff canteen which has better food than the hotel. Only issue is that you cant pay for the food there, you will need to convince one of the staff to use their pass to buy you the meal (you can pay the obliging staff member if you find one). There is a corner shop just outside the hotel which has the cheapest beer I found in China - Tsingtao available. Happy memories!
Oh BTW the hotel wifi didnt work - probably because there is a sign at the reception counter giving the password.

        • I was able to use hotel wifi, but you need to enter a password which is on the wall

        • Correction: The airport staff canteen is opposite the hotel, not the airport.

  • I hear Xi'an has the best food in all of China. So seems like a great place to stay overnight.

    • +1

If you go Xian you MUST see the Terracotta Warriors, simply nuts! The food in the old city it pretty awesome as well. I want to go back to Xian, then Shenzen for shopping and back home.

      • I found the Wild Goose Pagoda sound and light show more interesting.

    VIC school holiday periods!

    wish this was from Brisbane.

just note that China visa is $160.

    • +3

It cost me 120 for single entry, you need to go to the Visa office not the embassy.

      • sorry, you are right. $120. I paid for 3 - $360. I shouldn't comment before coffee

      • Please ensure you make a booking from visaforchina.org before you go. The booking is for an hour long slot. When you enter the visa office, take a paper ticket, even though you have a booking. Its next to the security/reception as soon as you enter the waiting hall. You also need to fill in the form online, get a submission number and print out your form.

  • Can someone explain how you can book the free nights accommodation / the process they book you in. Understand +6 hours transit.

    • You cant book. You just go to the hotel booking counter on the ground floor with your barding pass, onward booking, passport.

  • Where do I enter the coupon code? I went through to Wotif but don't see any option to enter the code.

  • Hh, I didn't scroll down the list far enough. Got it, thanks.

  • Can I just get the return flight to xi'an with the same price or lower?

    • +1

Skyscanner. You can and they fly direct for about the same price after using the coupon but you won't get the free hotels or stopovers.

  • Hainan Airlines is one of the better Chinese airlines, I have flown 4. The cabin staff are excellent. One thing to note is that the Chinese like to treat the plane cabin as their own home. Which is all good fun and quite entertaining, actually.

  • $381.15 to Beijing return! Thanks OP!
I don't know if I got the 6% off. I logged in via my membership, searched for the tickets that way. I definitely got a couple of % off though. Also the $50 voucher worked.
All up I'm very happy to be returning for a looksie after 7 years absence.

    Thanks very much again OP!!!

  • Waiting for a sale like this for Oct 2018 fingers crossed

  • Will these deals continue to pop up in the near future you think? I just don't know what dates i'll be free next year yet… it's uch a good deal though :(

  • Do they supply wine and liquor onboard?
