Sonos Play:5 - $625 Delivered @ Addicted to Audio

50

Sonos play 5 gen 2.

The PLAY:5 uses six state-of the-art digital amplifiers individually coupled with six speakers to deliver great sound to any room. Each instrument, each voice, every detail shines through, pure and precise. With remarkably distinct clarity. And zero audible distortion. Even when you crank it up loud. Really loud.

Control all your music and streaming services from a single app (on your smartphone, tablet or computer) through your home WiFi network. Easy to set up and allows you to expand your system over time.

Free Sonos Controller apps for Android, iPhone and iPad let you control your Sonos players, music on the Internet and your computer right from the palm of your hand. Download the apps for free on the iTunes App Store or Google Play™.

Turn any Mac or PC desktop or laptop computer in your home into a Controller. The software is included for free with every Sonos component.

If you have multiple music players, you can control what's playing in any room from anywhere in your house. Sonos Controllers aren't tied to a specific player, so you can use any Controller to control the music and the volume in all your rooms.

625 is an excellent price for such a unit.

Credit to addicted to audio for the free shipping as well.

I had some expiring hardly normal gift cards so was able to price match with them in store as it falls within their policy, but apparently is below their cost for the unit.

Expensive speaker, but well worth it IMO.

You can price match it at Harvey Norman too if preferred.

  • Not really comparing apples with apples perhaps, but why would someone buy this instead of Chromecast Audio + any bluetooth speaker + Google play music?

Genuine question, I promise I am not trolling.

    • Personally for me I don’t use Google Music. My subscription is with Apple.

As for the speakers themselves I was not sold on these either until I was around at a mates and saw his set up.

They are expensive and in the "premium" bracket the same level as apple or Seng or the like for warranty and updates and 'smart' functionality.

I am not a big tech person but want something I can plug and play. I am happy to pay a premium for the convenience.

The benefit of the play 5 is that it can have a line in - from the likes of a tv. Not optical though.

Bluetooth is not supported. It is a wifi connection and has better streaming qualities and also has premium subscription and playback with Spotify. Which is really annoying as you can't play anything from the app, unless through the line in function.

Again, there are many pros and cons about the system, but the best thing is the ability to upgrade if you like.

Have a look at resale and cost generally… I sold an old 5.1 system to fund my fist play 5 and was pretty happy with just having the one speaker.

I am trying to get less stuff in the house but of a better quality.

Go in store and ask the reps about them. Jb Myer and lots of big name retailers stock them, but they are seldom on special and have very little retail margin, often being excluded from tech sales. Again similar to apple etc. .

Not true about not being able to play to sonos from Spotify app. I do this all the time. You can play back to device and sonos is listed. Works well, but sometimes the volume control is a bit out of sync.

You can play Spotify on sonos if you’re not on the free Spotify tier. :-)

        • Ah, my bad. I was on the free trial of premium.

Wouldn't a Chromecast audio into the line-in do the trick?

    • You need mmore than 1… then it becomes an amazing experience

Have had them for years. Two Gen 1 play 5s and an amp unit and a ok amped unit

It just works and the sound quality for the models/price point are very good

You can do better individually but as an eco system hard to beat

  • Thinkofus.com.au is selling for $599 only.

    • Great find. Price wise they are quite competitive although standard shipping to a major capital centre is coming in at around 12 dollars just with regular post.

      So very comparable.

One of things I was wary of though is the reviews for this company, they are piled in with the likes of Kogan and other low stock facade shipping of items.

      Caveat emptor.

BTW, you don't need bluetooth for chomecast.
You do need ampified speakers, or an amplifier + speakers, or other alternative…

Airplay 2 will be supported from next year.

    • For anybody wanting further details, it's noted at the top of the Using AirPlay with Sonos support document on the Sonos support website.

      Using AirPlay with Sonos

Airplay 2 is the latest version of Apple's audio and video streaming platform. Airplay 2’s compatibility on Sonos will be available with a software update downloadable in 2018. Sign up here to be notified when Sonos is compatible with Airplay 2.

  • I discovered on Friday that this deal (Addicted to Audio) has been reduced to $614 (still with free shipping).

I managed to get Harvey Norman to price match a Sonos PLAY:5 for $614 ($514 after AMEX $100 cash back).

Apparently $614 was below Harvey Norman's buy price, but they still honoured the price match after approval from a manager, who thoroughly reviewed Addicted to Audio's website, location, terms and conditions etc., etc…
