what can i practically use these for besides camping?

    • +1

12v battery and an inverter would be an alternative to a generator during a blackout (for small items under 150w)

You will need a regulator as well - the cheap ones are about $15.

      • And sun.

It would be more practical to get a portable generator.

        • and more expensive, plus you need to power it with fuel.

          and more expensive,

Not by much. It works at night and under cloudy conditions. It's also small enough to carry around.

          $120 doesn't include a regulator, an inverter and brackets/stand.

Solar panels needs sun light to operate.

@whooah1979: that's where batteries come in?

We go camping so we went battery and solar panel set up. A lot of campsites don't allow you to use generators anymore, and if they do they often have limits, so can only be operated 9am to 3pm or something..

No that i'm against the idea of a generator, but that's one hell of a nasty unit.
          Specs are very dodgy, eg…
Noise Level: 65dB at 7m — Who measures noise level @ 7m? i reckon i'll put a generator on eBay and market it as 22bd at 1000m!
Fuel Type: Regular Unleaded 95+RON — what about 91?

I'd love to have a look at the output of one of these on my scope, pure sine wave my arse.

It's probably manufactured in a factory right next to one that's making the solar panels. It's all junk at this price range.

          LOL! very fair comment!

Well this is a bit embarrassing for you eh? … they ALL do! It's an industry standard method of comparison.

          Per Yamaha "Noise Level - 54/59 dba @ 7m" (http://www.yamaha-motor.com.au/products/power/inverter/10-ef…)

Per Honda "OPERATING NOISE LEVEL (AT 7M) - 53dB(A)*/59dB(A)" (http://powerequipment.honda.com.au/DetailPages/ProductDetail…)

At least you are probably still right about it being a crap generator though! :-D

        • @maximage:
The standard is usually to sample from 1m
Industries invent their own standards is bullshit.

        • @virtual81: Riiiiight, standard eh? So thats why all the gennie manufacturers specify at 7m then. OK…

      • when renovating while waiting for power to be connected so you can charge the radio.

These are this price once every month or so. Not great savings compared to normal.
