Not if you actually appreciate coffee.

        • +7

The 6910 with a reasonable grinder can make cafe quality coffees.

        • -8

          @wfdTamar: Lol. which cafes exactly?

        • Hey it's not going to be high end, but it can do a pretty good job - I've done it. Good beans and a good grinder make all the difference to it - and a while to learn how to do it.

is this for hipsters and their himalayan possum shit coffee beans

Not sure if you can, but combine it with a Breville Smartgrinder and you might get the $100 off deal. Hmm, it's $249 there. Maybe the $179 Dose Control Pro. (anything but the $99 Sunbeam one).

    Nup - it's for a single item.

  • What is the best manual machine with the smallest footprint for under $1000? With the footprint being the biggest factor?

    • +1

Good question. Probably one with a grinder built in. The Breville 870? Still pretty big, but it's all there bar a knock box and something to tamp on.

I'd say if compact is of that much importance a small auto, like a Jura, is your only option.

      • and personally I'm not mad about the Breville 870. I tried one and it had very weak steam though that could have been a problem with that particular machine as others have said the steam is ok.

        • Depends what you are used to.
The 870 steamer is slow, but gets the job done. If you come from a decent machine you definitely notice the difference.

Something like the Silvia blows it away (almost literally) in terms of steaming power.

A second hand version of the Rancilio silvia + rocky grinder combo (if you don't already have a grinder). It's fairly well known and recommended if you're getting into your coffee.

      • Like this, or get just the espresso (used) and a new SmartGrinder? Still not that compact a setup.

        http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rancilio-Silvia-V5-Rocky-Grinder-…

That's $1281 now. If you wait for an ebay 15 or 20% sale you would snaffle it for a good price.

Put this on your Watch list

        • Great machine, but really doesn't hit either goal, small footprint, under a grand!

I guess maybe a machine like this doesn't exist.

        • @serpserpserp: I would stack my smart grinder on top to save some bench space. Still a bit of room to warm a few cups.

        • @serpserpserp:
Ifthe small footprint is the most important thing then have a look at something like Flair Espresso maker https://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_odkw=brewista+scale&_osa… paired with a Bellman milk steamer it will cost you less than $400.

        • @ddhytz:

I even get a workout while I make a coffee! Nice bonus!

Just can't have too many people around for a coffee ;)

        • I have a ROK which is similar and barely does the job (compared to an espresso). That milk steamer looks the best option I've seen to go with an espresso or pod machine that doesn't do milk.

        • @wfdTamar:
I also have a ROK. It actually does a reasonably good job when you get workflow properly. Flair is simpler to use and has good reviews here https://www.home-barista.com/levers/user-experience-flair-es… I would have bought one if I did not have a Rossa PG.

      • Just depends if you want to temperature surf (Rancilio) or like the ability to brew and steam milk at the same time.

        • The new ones from V3 onwards (they're at V5 now) all come with PID. I wish they had that when I started. I skipped them because of that.

        • @mit:

          No they don’t.

No Silvia models come with a factory PID. You can have it optioned on when you buy it from most sellers, but it’s still an aftermarket job.

        • +1

Oh yep, my mistake. They're an option. So second hand with PID would be the way to go.

It's $349 with the grinder at Myer, but out of stock. Keep your eyes out for more stock though or there might be some in store.

    https://m.myer.com.au/shop/mobile/mystore/pu6910-espresso-ba…

Actually I think that might be an old ad that just came up in a Google. Can't find it on the normal Myer site. I reckon if you could find one in store you'd easily get it for that as it's obviously end of life clearance stock now.

    • I got one on that deal with the grinder and myer voucher per our Oz Bargain mate who posted it, sold the grinder for 65 bucks so ended up being about 260 for the machine. It is my second machine very happy to have a new one.

my old one lost its steam pump and needed a few repairs, cheaper to get a new one

Logged in just to say this is an amazing coffee machine, mines been running strong used daily for atleast the last 5 years with out a hiccup.

  • +2

Mine is coming up to 8 years old. Had it serviced once and it still makes coffees as good as the day it was bought. Upgraded to the Smartgrinder a while back, and it produces a cracking coffee. Machine is a bit noisy but otherwise great.

  • Would this one be better or the EM7000 for $500 (with the $100 code)?

    • The 7000 is better. It’s the next model up. A more recent design.

      • I guess I meant which would be the better buy? This for $380 (ebay) or the other for $500? Is the EM7000 worth $120 more?

        • +2

I'd say yes. If you can wait till around christmas you might get a better deal (always the story though). Interesting there's now a 7100 (does pods too). Compare the three here:

          https://www.sunbeam.com.au/en/Product-Comparison/?subCategor…

The 6910 milk is completely manual (no steam gauge or temp) and I never had a problem with it once I learnt the technique (not hard). The 7000 has a gauge for milk temp While handy, not really worth paying much extra for. However sounds like it has better steam.

Where they may be better is they have a brass group head (where the handle locks in) compared to the 6910's aluminium. The 7000/7100 are a development of the 6910 so you would think they would have learnt how to make them better as the 6910 has been around for quite a while. I do remember that the 6910 is quite loud. The 7000 is much quieter apparently.

          Reviews and comparisons here:
          http://coffeesnobs.com.au/brewing-equipment-midrange-500-150…

          http://www.cremamagazine.com.au/sunbeams-new-em7000-review
          very informative

        • @wfdTamar:

Do you know of any good reviews for the 7100? Thanks for all the other information.

        • +1

No, other than googling it. It seems a pretty recent model so you're unlikely to get it for a good price.

I reckon if you're considering spending that kind of money you'd be better off getting the Breville 920/SmartGrinder combo when it's under $1000 (which it seems to be a few times a year). Just set up a notification on here about deals for the 920 (I can't remember how to do it) and wait.

The BES920 has been $679, the Smartgrinder quite a few times $179 (sometimes less).

    • And the shite thing is we just missed the em7000 deal @399 tgg which makes it so hard to settle on the same price for this XD

      • Thats why you need a Coles Mastercard with 2 years price protection.

  • Had this machine since 2010. used every day - making between 4 and 8 coffees daily. Workhorse. I have the smart grinder pro. Needed to be serviced once.

    Machine worth every penny.

    • This is true and that is THE best combo going re forum, ozb, general concensus. NO debate, sorry to sound dictatorial however truth is truth

      • Yep

        • Debatable. Certainly popular as its been at a price point and in store availability most people can accept starting at. I think the Breville 920 combo is as popular.

    • Have one at work. Bought some cheap shitty pre-ground beans… didnt know how to tamp correctly or the importance, spat out some really frigging shit coffee.

I did a bit of a google around and realised it wasnt a cheap machine so i did a bit of research. Bought some better beans, watched some videos to get a better handle on what i was doing etc.. and the coffee was way better so i bought one for myself for home.

Its about 18 months on from this now. Last week one of my colleagues who i have been making coffee for bought me a kilo of beans from the local hipster joint that has a line out front every day. After some adjustment of the grind i made a few short blacks… i was blown away at how good of a job it did. Literally only maybe 5-10% off the quality of that cafe.

      • Yes, the grinder that comes with it often is very average and inconsistent. Once you change that for something better (the Breville SmartGrinder is not too expensive and a good match) and use decent beans with a bit of technique/practice it does a great job. Probably the best bang for buck along with the Breville 920 (which is better, but more expensive).

  • Had this and the EM7000 - I feel the 7000 is worth the extra $120.

Good machine regardless. I believe Sunbeam make better espresso machines than Breville at a similar price, but the Breville grinders are much better.

    • okay im sold, gonna hold out for another ~$400 EM7000 deal. It'll come, def by Christmas. And the Smart Grinder Pro deal is needed too

      • The best Sunbeam (barring that new Torino one) are not really in a similar price or class as the best Breville (the dual boilers). They're different things and levels of commitment.

I'd recommend the 6910/Smartgrinder as an entry point, then 7000/SmartGrinder. If you can, the Breville 920/SmartGrinder is worth the extra (when under $1000).
