Last time I purchased this, I couldn't activate it. Buyer beware.

Yeah pretty random as to whether the SIMs work or not

    • +2

Pretty Random, I got two a few weeks apart and neither would validate. So i think is pretty lucky if they don't work. Kept me out of harms way. Lets face it, if Optus can not get something as simple as a SIM right, do I want to trust them with your phone in a emergency??

i bought 2 last week. the sim card is faulty cannot activate. i am not suggest anyone to buy it.

  • +5

My resolution was this. If you have an existing service number, you can get the agents to transfer the credit from the faulty SIM (non-activating) to your current working SIM.

So basically, it'll act as a recharge for whatever plan you're on. If you don't have an active service number, you would have to go to a shop and get yourself a $2 SIM card.

    Quite a hassle

    • Spent 3 hours trying to transfer from faulty SIM. Was told they can't do it because it was not activated. How do they expect me to activate a faulty SIM?

  • Mine is still under activation since 3 days. Hope optus wakes up from its sleep

  • With so many complains from actual users, why don't you neg the deal so noone get caught buying it?

    • The OP does point out "Only buy if you have spare time to troubleshoot," .
To me its a bit of fun, amid the frustration, in chasing and having to work for the deal/discount.
At $30 credit for $5, to me (and im sure to some others also) it is worth the potential delays and having to possibly call customer service.
A hint for those that are doing sim swaps though, make sure you start the process early in the day, just in case there are any hassles or delays, you dont want to be stuck without any service, and after call centre hours 😔 . If you make activation attempts early in day, you have plenty of time to chase them up and call up later, if not activated in the 4 hours maximum wait they mention. My sim swaps are usually completed within 5 minutes after call to customer service though 😃

I bought 2 of these last wk. I used online chat in the middle of the night and they added the credit both times to my existing number. Beware though, my existing sim was deactivated both times, and it was the new sim (with my existing number and it's existing credit that they transferred to the NEW simcard… Which is fine AS LONG AS YOU KNOW THIS).

I'd almost given up on Optus but after opening a complaint ticket to the TIO about them a month ago (with good results for me) seems to have altered their attitude somewhat.

    Good luck 🍀

  • can you use this as a broadband (4gb/month) plan?

    • Yes. Using it right now.

  • Bought 12 packs 2 weeks ago activated 3 so far no problems. Although I did port 1 number over from ovo and it took dam optus 7 days and many online chat sessions to a bunch of Indians to finally get it done.

  • Another frustrating attempt to activate a"fautly sim" a few days ago… not worth the risk.

  • +2

Buyer beware, you are randomly put into one of these situations

    a) On live chat/phone/in store for hours trying to sort it out and activate it (sometimes to no avail)
    b) Flat out doesn't work
    c) Or you have no problems!

Data collated from fellow OzBargainer's experiences as well as my own and my mates.

  • For the free $2 sim, you actually have to recharge $10 into it to Activate a number on the new sim…..Is this the case for everyone? Defeat my purpose then to just use the number for receiving calls only without any credit required.

    • No not true the store activated my $2 replacement sim it didn't require a $10 recharge.

    • That is also what I was told in the store. I was trying to keep my number. I eventually had them transfer the $30 to it but it took days.

  • Bought one of these a few weeks ago. Couldn't get it to work even after multiple visits to the Optus store and many calls to customer service. Had to forego the money and stay with another operator.

  • I'm currently with Optus.
Google play music used up my data even thought it's supposed to be data free, just left it streaming the other day and it just stopped, got a text saying I've used up all my data!!

    • +1

You have to actually turn it on in MyAccount.

      • Thank you so so much I'll try it out as soon as possible :D.

        BTW are you single =D

        • +1

No worries! And no sorry :-p

  • If you port your number from carriers that use Optus network (eg. Amaysim and lots of other companies), you need to provide Same Carrier CID in order to get your number transferred. Contact the losing carrier to get this first, otherwise you can activate via Online Chat, tell the agents that where you want port the number from, they will get this sorted easily.
    Hope this could helped.

    • I was on optus chat everyday for 6 days they knew it was ovo, optus to optus. They kept running me in circles indian to next indian always promised that the next day would definitely be transferred. On the 6th day another indian called me on the saturday before queens bday he said should be on on tuesday i told him to get f*****.

      • Legend bro'.

What is the relevance of the call centre people being Indian - or would you prefer not to answer that?

        • Because they don't seem to get it and its hard to understand them they talk so fast.

      • Told him to get ? falafels and celebrate a lovely long weekend with his family and friends 😃

      • I'm trying to get from ovo to optus as well. Same 4hr promise 3 days ago. My ovo account says deactivated, but it still isn't active with Optus.

How did you call them? I had to get online chat to call me. Optus customer support services are terrible. The app doesn't even allow you to access the prepaid activation support line until it's active??

Have you tried Bricks n mortar store? I'm heading there next.

        • I just went through online chat on my pc for about 4 days then some guy called me back and was no help he said someone will call you monday this was saturday before queens birthday. Lost my cool told him where to go. On Tuesday i got onto online chat again with a letter ready and just pasted it in well she put me through to connections real quick and he phoned me back and said i can finalize this and within 30 minutes it was done. I transferred a friend from optus to amaysim about 2 weeks ago and that took about 5 days she was 3 days without being able to make calls or text or receive them.

        • Same situation porting from OVO to Optus last week. I was told by Optus porting supervisor that porting from a mobile provider on Optus network like OVO, Amaysim, etc…to Optus requires the porting department to do it. If porting did not complete after 4 hours of request, you need to call the porting department to check. I know this sounded stupid in this era of IT automation. Call the sales support line and ask them to transfer you to the porting department. Reaching the porting department could be quite a hassle.

        • @paulaus:

Day 5. Nothing working! Found a ph:13 13 44 number to call. Optus lady confirms Ovo have released the port but there system isn't allowing her to activate the sim. Says she will have it sorted and call me on another number in 3 hrs. She does call and says to check service. I'm out walking with gf and couldn't check. Get home. Received a sms. Thinking finally it's working.. Wrong!.No credit see how we go tomorrow

        • +1

@F1ngolf: Day 6. Sim no longer works at all. Further away than when I started. Optus chat not working… I originally thought u went to far losing your $hit..I stand corrected. 1 week with no active number to call out of or receive calls in to. AVOID Optus.. Even if it is free!

Oh, and every operator every day has guaranteed me they will call back the next day on another number to.confirm it's all working .. Not one has. Straight to supervisor tomorrow. I dont want to abuse the front line workers.

        • +1

          @tunzafun001:
Day 7. Still not working. On chat again for another 40mins. Put through to Supervisor. It was an Indian guy (which is relevant as I couldn't understand him after repeatedly asking him to slow down and my partner trying as well). No idea what the problem is that he was explaining, something to do with 24hrs. I asked him to call me back every hour on the hour until it's fixed. He did call me back after the first hr. Said something. Nothing since. No service continues

  • Yep, another loser here with a sim that wouldn't activate, and online chat wouldn't/couldn't sort it out. I'd steer clear. Not worth the hassle. Surprised Optus isn't being hauled over the coals for delivering so many faulty products.

    • +1

Day 8 and 9. Still no connection. Asked for customer service to put me through to a supervisor. As soon as they answered I asked for job title and ID number. 4 times they put me through to a non supervisor. He insisted it will be fixed in 24 hrs, and he would call back to check. Never did! Now Sitting in bricks and mortar Optus store. Been here for an hr, while she serves other people waiting for the manager. Walked out the back and got the manager myself. AVOID OPTUS

  • I just had 3 x optus $30 sims delivered and I was pleasantly surprised by the 2019 expiry date 😆 .
I think it was a deal from optus website. It was a deal linked from ozbargain recently, so many deals i cannot remember which one exactly it was.
With the 2019 expiry sims i just had delivered, many people were suggesting that there was only 1 month to activate, and other issues. But if the sim starter pack states 2019 expiry, then I cant see how they could not honour it.
I might get a couple of these, i do sim swaps so essentially just using these deals for discount recharge of existing service 🤑 , so keep number, plan etc, just tell them you have changed phones, or current sim card is damaged .

It was this deal above, direct from optus site, that sent me 2019 expiry $30 sim starter packs.
Cannot comfirm sim pack dates of this current offer though.

    • bought from this deal and expiry from the pack is showing Oct 2019. I haven't activated yet as my vodafone credit won't expire till next week.

  • So limited to 3 potential massive headaches per person, possibly requiring beating around the bush and creit card or paypal claims. No thanks.
I think floptus ought to reach out to actually rectify the situation they caused alot of people. I would't say they're too big to need to save some degree of loss of reputation.

If you want some data try Kogan Extra Large Plan 16GB Data (or Any Other) $4.90 (Save $45)

  • Purchased two SIms for my friends who were cming rom overseas and both SIMs were faulty. Had to go to the Optus shop and when we complained they reluctantly changed the Sims for us.Very bad experience.

    • You should report and send feedback to head management in optus customer service.
The store staff SHOULD be more than happy to replace any faulty sim, if the sim shows it is not expired, yet it is faulty, they SHOULD replace it straight away with no arguing with them etc.
Anyone working in the stores customer service, who makes it difficult or is rude, to customers needing a faulty sim replaced, well those individuals clearly should not be employed in a customer service role.
I would report the bad experience to feedback on optus website, tell which store, which employee etc, and they will be spoken to by their management and possibly fired if bad customer service continues.

      • As I said before, store do not want anything to do with SIM bought from optus online store. It's like two seperate companies.

  • Beware!

I paid $5 to buy an $30 Optus sim card on Sep.28,2017 online, there's a Promotion in Optus website $30 SIM for $5 (Activate on chosen plan within 30 days of purchase. Offer ends 10th Oct 17.).

I tried to activate this card on 8th.Oct.2017, but failed. Then I Live Chat with Optus to get help on activation and was told this SIM card is INVALID, then I was requested to pay $30 to activate it. I did not accept it because I paid $5 to get this $30 SIM in Promotion. After that, the staff asked me to pay $2 to buy a new SIM to active it. I rejected it again and asked for refund. But the staff refused to give me refund.

Then I checked online and found similar complaints from others.

    • Tell Optus, in writing, that you are heading here:

      https://www.tio.com.au/making-a-complaint

in the absence of a satisfactory response.

      • Yes, that's right.
They gave me the ridiculous run-around until I said the magic letters "T.I.O." to a supervisor. I said I didn't want to but I would have no choice unless they fixed it by the end of business, after about the tenth call including being transferred to nowhere and hung up on once.
Fixed the next day with extra credit
Optus have quietly become quite a mess. Their processes just don't work any more.

        • +1

Appreciate for the information on TIO, and also heard from others that PayPal can help get money back. I think $5 for one person is not a big deal, but it seems that many others are having similar issues.

        • @zzhealthy:

This Optus dodgy business practice has been going on for years. Do a search. Imagine how much Optus has made for every person who forgo their faulty SIM.

        • +2

I've lodged a complaint with TIO as I can't even go elsewhere as my number is not active and stuck in Optus. 11 days, no phone. I have listed all 23 employees ID # that haven't dealt with my case. I even used the Optus stores computer to lodge it as they too were too busy on the phone to customer service.

  • Same shit.

    Bought this the last time

    1) Card arrived, could not activate
    2) Was asked to go into store, store gave the run-around unable to help
    3) Re-directed to a call center again and was told to buy a $2 card and the rest of the credit will be transferred over (no refund on the $2
    4) Made noise to another call center and this time was told to buy a $2 card and a refund will be credited.
    5) Our fault here, we bought a broadband card for $2 and had to go back into the store to get a $2 mobile card for the credit transfer
    6) Finally card was activated but only 50mb of data inside
    7) Just got off the line with the chat service, they were unable to help as they could not confirm that we bought the 4+10 deal.
    8) Will speak to a prepaid service specialist when the lines open, see what happens then. I'm quite pissed, T.I.O magic letters would be used.
