Bam! Purchased :) Will put it in my spare phone which I use in the car for music streaming :)

    • +2

Thanks for letting us all know.

      • +5

I get the sarcasm but I didn't even think about using an old android in the car permanently just for music streaming. I might buy a SIM for the same reason :)

        • +2

I'm an uber driver and have Apple music with a decent amount of offline playlists , however rather then the typical have you got an auxiliary cord? I provide a phone mounted on the dash for my riders 😘

        • +1

          @Gomo:
Ew Apple Music, I'd get out of your car for that

        • +1

@cdaddy: lucky your in Melb then :P

    • +5

I am not sure if this is an error or not, but they also have $30 broadband data sim for $5
      Here is the link
      http://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaid/mobile-broadband/sim-ca…

It has 14GB data. So if you want to use just the data, this would be better

      • Mobile broadband is what I read too. So this offer is definitely not for mobile voice calls and sms, right?

  • +3

Last time they sent me an expired SIM card

    • Paypal dispute

    • took long time to get it fixed… called hotline, activated a $2 SIM and got the credit transferred…

      • Did you get the credit transferred immediately? Mine was not. Still waiting. They said it takes 7 days..

        • The girl is actually adding credit to the new SIM card. She even not bother with the original SIM card no

    • +3

Same here, been over a week, wasted about two hours of my time, been to shop twice, still waiting for a functioning SIM with correct credit balance. Unbelievable. Steer clear.

    • +3

This has happened to me too. Took 1 1/2 hours to sort out at an Optus shop. They had to ring optus themselves as they wouldn't simply give me a new $30 sim pack. Ordered online and was sent a SIM that had already expired even before my order date.

    • +1

You're not alone, same issue and need to ring 2 times still cant get refund, end up paypal dispute.

    • Been On the phone for over an hour right now. It has been a week and nothing has solved… I keep getting redirected to different departments.. someone help me..

      • +2

Same thing for me. Wasted about 3 hours on it all, had to go to shop twice, long support chats three times. They ended up giving me 10GB on the new SIM card, however claimed that I had already used 5GB of data when I demanded the full 14GB. I tried to tell them it was not possible, the SIM was not active, my device was off, it was not showing the usage under My Account. They just would not listen to me, so ended up cutting my losses and just gave up and walked away with my 10GB. Never again Optus.

    • +1

Similar here…got dud sim on last $10/14GB deal. The store said to follow a certain procedure to solve, yet the online optus support said that procedure was not valid. Lots of time wasting.

  • +2

That's up to 15GB over 15 Days when you use $2 a day with $30 recharge value (Daily Maximiser)
Unlimited texts, calls, data-free music streaming,

    Woah I'm in!

    • +1

Prepaid Daily Maximiser is closing to new customers on 5 October 2017.

      • +1

Good thing I can activate it before then :)

Purchased it impulsively, so hopefully I'll have a use for it!

  • u can buy more than 1, by repeating the procedures. no mechanism to check if you have bought any before.

    • They might just cancel any subsequent orders once they notice the same name / address etc

    • +1

3 per credit card before getting error messages.

      • After the first three Sim ($10), I ordered another 4 sim ( 2x$2 SIM card , and 2 x $30 ( on sale $5)) with same details . All four received without problem

  • +2

do you really have to Activate on chosen plan within 30 days of purchase? Thinking of keeping it for next year

    • Lol, well you can try it and see what happens! Worst case scenario, you lose $5.

    • Full condition printed on back of pack:
"Activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised in a promotion" which is 28/01/18 at latest.

But may be to be able to activate up until SIM expiry date in 2019 on current packs.

      • "Activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised in a promotion"

you know, i really don't interpret this statement as requiring activation. instead i see it as an attempt to get you to activate it by then without actually lying to you i.e. it's deliberately phrased to invoke a false impression

for what it's worth, i have never complied with the statement.

  • +1

    Thanks brought one.

    • +16

      Where to?

      • -1

        To Infiniti and beyond!

  • What are the chances you can activate this beyond 30 days?

    • +2

I did bought one with same writing but activated after 3 months.
I did have bad experience with activation though, wasted 2 days to get it activated.
      The shop couldn’t help either.

  • +1

Does anyone know the expiry date on these?

  • +1

thanks heaps! will need one for October.

  • Where does it say that it has to be activated within 30 days of purchase?

  • +3

Looks like the deal also applies to the data SIM. 14gb for one month http://offer.optus.com.au/shop/prepaid-mobile-broadband/sim-…

  • -1

thanks got 12 last week $5 each. If they dont list on the web site ad about the must activate within 30 days you dont have to. The 12 i got last week had no label on the front saying must activate in 30 days and the expiry on the back was about 2 years. But the deal before that stated on the web site ad must be acivated within 30 days and also the sims i received had the sticker on the front.

    • R you planning on porting out/back in after every month and use same number? Or just activating on new numbers? Because I heard Optus were difficult when porting out/back in again, or is this untrue? Thanks

    • The 12 i got last week had no label on the front saying must activate in 30 days

Back of pack now contains the printed condition:
"Activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised in a promotion"
(Stickers were temporary measure until new packs were printed)

If they dont list on the web site ad about the must activate within 30 days you dont have to

OPTUS site offer in both these deals contained the condition Must be redeemed by 28/01/18. (Except for PREPAID DAILY MAXIMISER 05/10/17) In "The Nitty Gritty" at bottom of offer.

      Received 3 last week
Should be able to activate beyond the stated activation date in offer up until SIM expiry date on pack, but it is now riskier.

      Always carefully read any t&c!

      • Ok just saw that printed on the back of 6 new SIM packs but 6 with the expiry of Jan 1 19 don't have that printed on the back or a sticker on the front I will use them last.

        • Yes, some seem to have been issued without the sticker so have no expiry date except the 2019 one. Have 1 of those out of 3. Like you - will save to last.

Last week I read the first pack received - without the 30 day condition. Read comment here that it is now on back of pack & so read pack today that had arrived days after the first. Was surprised. Thought I must have missed it in first pack. But packs have definitely different conditions.

      • I scrolled through this thread and the Optus offer, I couldn't find the value for prepaid ultimate. It's only 3GB for $5, right?

  • There were a lot of complains in the other deal posted that people were getting SIM cards either expired or refuse to activate..

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/329523

I had this issue with the 7/11 $10 sim starter kits that were going for $1 but it was some back-end issue they've since rectified and they work OK now.

Unsure about these optus ones thou, at least in the short term.

    • -1

yeah i had trouble with a couple of them glad its fixed still have about 20 left.

  • +1

    Done

    Thanks

  • +2

I bought it in last week's deal
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/329523
On package it says "sim expires on 1 Oct 2019" and " Activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised on a promotion."
I haven't activated it yet, planning to switch from TPG at the end of my current billing cycle.

    • Advertised activation date in this & last deal is Must be redeemed by 28/01/18, so not 30 days. (Except for PREPAID DAILY MAXIMISER)

  • what happens if you dont activate within 30 days?

    • +2

      The Nitty Gritty

      MUSIC STREAMING DATA FREE
SIM Card Activation: Must be redeemed by 28/01/18 in order to receive the offer.

      PREPAID ULTIMATE PLUS
Extras Credit and Extras Credit Add Ons
SIM Card Activation: Must be redeemed by 28/01/18 in order to receive these offers.

      MY PREPAID LONG EXPIRY
SIM Card Activation: Must be redeemed by 28/01/18 in order to receive the offer

No mention it needs to be activated within 30 days.

      • +2

Except PREPAID DAILY MAXIMISER (current offer is ending, but may continue with changed inclusions)
SIM Card Activation: Must be redeemed by 05/10/17 in order to connect to this offer.

Packs now have the wording "Activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised in a promotion" - the above advertised dates.

  • +1

Last one i got from them couldn't be activated. Chatted online, they said the sim card is faulty

    • +4

Maybe that is why they are discounting the faulty SIM cards

  • With Optus data free Spotify streaming, do you have to have Spotify premium, or can you still get data free streaming with a free account? Cheers

    • +1

You can have data-free streaming from a free account, but I'm not sure where the ads would take the data from. Check your usage I guess, not sure if ads would count as "music" or not. Probably would, but just make sure.

  • +2

OP - packs received in last deal contain the wording "Activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised in a promotion"

    Activation dates in this promotion:
In "The Nitty Gritty" at bottom of offer states
SIM Card Activation: Must be redeemed by 28/01/18 in order to receive the offer.

Except PREPAID DAILY MAXIMISER (current offer is ending, but may continue with changed inclusions)
SIM Card Activation: Must be redeemed by 05/10/17 in order to connect to this offer.

    Different activation dates are claimed:
Information in offer gives activation date (to qualify for this offer - differing by plan chosen, but likely just cut off date for current plans - that may be changed beyond that date), 30 days to activate after purchase on pack (seems simply to qualify for advertised current plans), & SIM expiry date marked on pack you purchase.

I've activated SIMs up to expiry date on pack. I won't be activating these SIMs for months.

Ordered 3 SIMs last deal in 3 orders - all promptly delivered.

    • Aah this is deal breaker 'Except PREPAID DAILY MAXIMISER (current offer is ending, but may continue with changed inclusions)
SIM Card Activation: Must be redeemed by 05/10/17 in order to connect to this offer'.

  • I bought 20 from last deal. So far no problems with activation.

  • +1

I bought one from last deal. Here is my experience
    - Porting (from an Optus MVNO) took 48 hours. This is kinda expected, but why?
    - I opted for the six month plan. I was foolish enough not to read that it didn't include any data or SMS — the thing is these should be available at $0.05/MB and $0.20/SMS. However they were not available and they had no easily contactable customer service to fix this issue
    - Ported out 15 mins after successfully porting in. WARNING: Do not choose long expiry plan for anything except an 'emergency phone'! :(

    • Why didn't you check the plan details before selecting one?

      • I was impatient

    • should be available at $0.05/MB and $0.20/SMS. However they were not available

How did they show as not available? It should be as that is the promoted offer.

(Am considering Long Life for my permanent number with few outgoing calls. Did that for years on Telstra Longlife-Simplicity plans at around same rates.)

      Details are in deal offer:

My Prepaid Long Expiry (only has $30 credit)
      186 DAYS EXPIRY
      $30 MYCREDIT

      TALK & TEXT
20c per min for a call to standard Australian mobiles and landlines, 13/1300 numbers and voicemail and 20c per text to standard national SMS (160 characters) and MMS.

5c PER MB DATA Charged per KB.

      CRITICAL INFORMATION SUMMARY pdf

      • Every time I tried to send an SMS on my Nexus5x I got an error that the message cannot be sent. It did say Optus up the top though.

        Using Boost now.

        • Did you check account balance before jumping to that conclusion?

That sounds like it was not fully activated (may have taken longer to activate, especially when porting, despite showing Optus) & had no credit active on the account yet. That would produce that message. Sometimes you need to wait…

          Patience WaywardOne!

        • @Infidel:

You might be right. I didn't know a partial port existed.

        • +1

          @WaywardOne:
Well things can go wrong or be delayed. Seems everything but the $30 credit was set up.

  • What is so good about the daily maximized? Credit expires in 21 days only. The old dollar a day plan lasted 180 days and you could use your credit any time during that.

    • Not that much & it is changing or ending in a days.
That $1 plan has not been available for a long time. No use comparing plans unavailable to new users on these Starter Packs.

  • +1

Just purchased one, on the PayPal receipt it mentions payment to "Optus Shop ([email protected])" why is that? Was expecting to see something like optus.com.au

    • +1

received the sim, it comes with a delivery note in someone else's name and address. I suppose another person got my details too.

  • +1

    Got 2, thanks OP

  • +4

It's also possible to price match at Officeworks to get the sim right away and for only $4.75!

I mainly use these $30 starter packs for cheaper roaming data in strange places when I'm there for a short time and just need calls or data for messenger/maps etc.

    With a $30 pack
In Zone 1 countries you get 60mb (effective rate of 8.4c per mb) or 30 minutes of calls
In Zone 2 countries you get 30mb (effective rate of 17c per mb) or 15 minutes of calls

    • Interesting. Not a bad idea actually.

You mention it's data OR calls.. so you don't get both?

      • You get $30 credit and pay for calls, data and messages from that credit.

So you could use part of it on data and part on calls or just use all of it on data.

  • SIM doesnt work. Total spastics at Optus
Sorry OP neg is to warn others. So many problems with Optus SIMS

    • +1

No issues here. Ordered 2 separate SIMS, both fine. User error perhaps?

      • +3

Not user error, Optus dud SIM error.
Spent ages in chat and they want me to go to an Optus shop due to faulty SIMs .
Not the first time with these clowns. These are the Mobile broadband SIMS BTW so it might just be those.
Others have had the same problem

      • +1

no, as others have noted, this seems a bunch of faulty SIMs requiring you to go to an Optus shop to swap SIMs. And then waste several hours to actually get activated and secure the 'deal' of 14gb before the deadline. Can be worth it if time-vs-14gb works out…

        • +3

If you have those $2 Optus SIM for $0 you can ask activations to transfer the service to the new SIM

  • +1

my SIM card does not work either. King Tightarse isn't alone.

You can try plugging the SIM number if you like, see it for yourself.
    https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/10382/52555/media-2017…

Does anyone know the direct phone number to contact a service rep?

    • +1

If you paid with PayPal the simplest pathway is to do a claim and re-buy with a pricematch at Officeworks , assuming you have one close. Optus will ask to to go in to a store but I wouldnt recommend that as they will stuff you around/waste your time/attempt to sell you other things.
Online chat is quicker than calling as its actually kind of difficult to find a human.
      http://www.optus.com.au/shop/notices/service-chat

      • +1

I've come back from the store just then. The process involved me activating a $2 sim (no balance) and then getting the sales rep to transfer the prepaid balance from faulty sim to the new $2 sim

Once I get home I will try and see if there's the full 14gb of data on it

      • Just an update, after using 2GB, the SIM stopped working. I can't check balance on it either after sending SMS messages to the "9999" number. The Optus website also seems to not let me create an Optus account to check the balance, it simply gives me a spinning wheel of death after entering my SIM service number.

So not sure how much exactly is left on the SIM, but I'm guessing it did not have 14 gb of data.

Feeling a bit of disappointment with Optus now.

        • +1

          Use this link- https://www.optus.com.au/customercentre/myaccount/dashboard
It should show you your balance without having to create a My Optus account, so long as you are connected to the SIM.
BTW I think you start with 4GB and they add the extra 10GB after a day or so

        • +1

          @King Tightarse:

thanks for the reply. Clicking it brings me to a SIM activation page (even though the SIM is clearly working before) instead of the Dashboard page.

Might sleep on this one and work on it tomorrow :(

          Thanks again

        • +1

          @scrimshaw:

          25 hours later….

SIM still not working. Well, it was working, then stopped after 2 hours of use.

Online Chat tells me I need to wait another 24+ hr before the SIM correctly has the 14 gigs of data. I just said thanks, that's all I need to know today and finished the chat.

Optus is starting to fall into 'worse than Dodo' levels of service quality here. After the livechat I pretty much blasted the company to bits (albeit in polite and professional manner) and clicking 1 to "would you recommend optus to family and friends".

          Let's see if they reply..

    • Just tried mine and got exactly the same error message. Using a broadband SIM. Grrr I don't have time for the run around I wish it would just work. No Optus!

    • Same issue… have contacted the live chat and gave them sim no.they told me they already contacted the activation team and let me to wait 4 hours to try again. But still doesn't work!!

  • Same problem

  • +1

I have been to the Optus shop to exchange the faulty sim. But they don't have this kind of SIM in stock. Wasting my time.

  • To those who received a faulty sim, I can see the "catch" here. You have to buy a sim and recharge first, then you can use the credit. Please correct me if I am wrong.

    • This is exactly what the lady in Optus shop told me.

  • Slightly off topic… which is the better plan? Daily Maximiser or Ultimate?

I noticed Maximiser is only 21days for $30, but the offer finishing soon seems like there might be some hidden value there! lol Google play credits, etc isn't a thing with Optus is it?

    • +2

      Daily Maximiser or Ultimate?

Depends what you're after. Maximiser is good for tourists who are here for a short time. $2/day for 1GB and unlimited calls/text is pretty damn good.

Ultimate is cheaper on a monthly basis if you're here for a month, but you get (as a monthly quota) less data overall, but you still get unlimited calls and text.

I noticed Maximiser is only 21days for $30

This would mean if you used it everyday, you would have used it up in 15 days. It just means the credit itself can last for 21 days.

Google play credits, etc isn't a thing with Optus is it?

      Correct it isn't.

  • Ordered this specifically for the 4Gb +Bonus10Gb (if recharged before 1/10/2017) but it didn't receive until yesterday (thanks StarTrak! /s ). Tried to activate last night but it's a dud SIM, and online assistant says I need to go swap it at an Optus store. Can't get there today so will miss out on the deal. Stupid waste of time.

    • +1

same thing happening to me. dud sim T_T

  • +1

    Dud SIM here too….

  • +1

    Maybe start #OptusFail?
