will this work on Lebara backed by vodafone ?

    • when you unlock it
Just because they use the Vodafone network does not mean it will auto work with Vodafone locked handsets.

      • +3

Sorry to disagree, but I am yet to see a handset first hand that has an MVNO lock as opposed to a network lock, so unless someone has tested this and knows otherwise my expectation is it works

        • +1

Thanks . Can any one confirm if it will work on vodafone backed mobile networks like lebra

        • +6

I have - Nokia Lumia 640, Telstra prepaid - won't work on Aldi without unlocking.

        • +4

          @MynyMouqe:

Telstra is a little different in that the TW network differs to the full telstra network. '

AFAIK Vodafone and Optus dont make such a distinction with their resellers so they just network lock the phones. I am yet to come across a vodafone prepaid that wont take a kogan or TPG sim.

    • +5

My kids have one each, both using KoganMobile (Vodafone MVNO)

Working nicely - no unlock needed

    • I used TPG sim in it and no need to unlock.

  • +1

Do they require ID to purchase? Need a burner phone.

    • +7

Best to go scamtree if you want to do you illegal activities.

    • +2

no, ID is taken when activating the sim

  • Does it support 4G?

  • +3

Unlock code available from ebay for $25
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/232508348522

    • Thanks, that's too high for this small phone, will pass…

    • 33 feedback. Buying an unlock code on eBay is dodgy enough without worrying about the seller doing a runner.

    • +1

Used this - took a couple of days, got it no problem though.

  • +1

Nice phone, sleek design, good performance for price. Ruined by terrible battery life

    • +1

      7.0 fixes this…can someone confirm?

      • battery life is worse for me on 7.0.

        • No issues on 7 for a family member.

  • Has anybody paid to unlock this previously? Looking at getting one for my son, but we need Telstra for coverage…

    • +1

Not this phone but I have unlocked a couple of Vodafone handset. I used unlock.vodafone.com.au but I cannot remember if it cost 50 or 80 dollars. I have seen on Ebay people offering unlock services for some handset could be worth looking into.

  • Anyone know if this supports LDAC? wouldn't mind using it as an mp3 player.

    • I don't think so, but from memory it supports AptX. Fyi - Android 8 will bring include naitive LDAC support but I'm not whether sure (or rather doubtful that) the XA will get it.

I use LDAC and the difference between lossless Redbook FLAC (16-bit 44.1 kHz) and hi-res FLAC / DSD (24 bit / 96-192 kHz) is much less noticeable than the jump from 320 kbps to Redbook, which is not massive in itself. This is also a lot less noticable on highly compressed modern pop/rock/r&b recordings.

Camera good? I have a project to use a few phones as remote cameras, but it needs to have a good enough camera. First time I've seen anything over 8mp on a phone in this price range

    • +1

Nope. My daughter had one of these and said the camera was terrible.

    • Got one for my sister a few months ago. She said the camera was poor. Loves the camera on her Motorola.

  • This or the xiaomi

    • +1

      Warranty.

  • +2

https://www.cnet.com/au/products/sony-xperia-xa/review The review of it is mostly negative because of the cost at launch ($499aud) putting it as too expensive for what it offered. At this price, it's cheaper than a Moto G4, with mostly similar specs (although battery seems average).

Seems like a great value buy. Worth keeping an eye on how difficult it is to unlock (the $50 vodafone fee for unlocking would be a deal breaker).

    • +1

The battery is more than adequate after the Android 7 update.

  • How's the camera on this? Compared to a flagship, and compared to the Xiaomi competition in this price range?

    • +2

It uses a smaller sensor with not as wide an aperture compared with flagships. On paper it’s good given it price point. You can use the gsm arena comparison tool to compare for yourself.
      http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=1&idPhone1=7950&i…

You can also check reviews and compare for yourself.

      • +2

I checked GSM arena, and compared the z5 (my current phone) with the redmi 4x and the XA. Surprisingly the pics from the XA in low light actually look better, maybe less colourful but also less noisy, and the 4x looked the best to me. Considering most phones will take a decent picture in sunlight I find it amazing that my 2 year old flagship is worse than this 1.5 year old lower midrange phone of the same brand.

        • +1

Interesting information, thanks. My guess is the low-light performance of the Z5 (I had a Z5C myself) is compromised due to the very high megapixel count, probably with a lower pixel size as the result (even it it uses a larger sensor).

        • +1

@elektron: makes perfect sense, I believe they are both 1/3" sensors

    • Got one for my sister a few months ago. She said the camera was poor. Loves the camera on her Motorola

      • +1

        Which Moto?

  • +2

Lots of issues, especially won't boot pass X logo.

Woolworths Booragoon (WA) sells this for $99.50 - Vodafone locked. I don't know about other Woolies as my friend got it from there. I'll get a price check since I'm there on Thursday but they did have about 5 in stock.

    • +1

Please confirm if this is true

    • Sorry guys, I was wrong…..

      It's even cheaper

  • +1

Can confirm it now costs 50 bucks to unlock. Shame, the previous three were free to unlock.

Guess they saw how many were being unlocked for free and didn't like it. Still a good deal, but no longer a GREAT deal.

    • +2

If that's the case (and it's possible), it's worth seeing if the ebay and other people providing (MVNO?) codes for ~$30 would do the job. Saves a bit.

      Thanks for the confirmation.

      • +1

Doesn't seem to be any of eBay.

You're welcome anyways. Also, thanks to the IMEI being on the outside of the packaging I didn't need to open it so I wonder if I can just take it back to Coles.

        • +1

This (from elsewhere in here) is what I was talking about.

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/232508348522

If you got that and the cheaper woolworths price if true, you are getting an unlocked phone for around $129.

        • Where abouts on the packaging is it?

        • +1

@superroach: 154 you mean. Still, better than 179. Thanks for that. Might be worth a go.

        • +1

@Lockster: on at least two sides of the box. On stickers visible without needing to tear the plastic off.

Would've tried and unlocked before buying but Coles lady was watching closely. Also the website just times out on mobiles for some reason. Had to do it at home on pc.

        • +2

@Selenium: I'll just bring a laptop in store ahahha

        • +1

@Lockster: Ha, not suspicious at all!

        • @Selenium:

I read on here someone checked IMEI number in shop to test before buying, so after finding last one in my area I mustered up courage to do that in Woolies before deciding to purchase, and guess how much mine came up as,…..$25, go figure lol. Had to get it haha

      • Worth a try, but don't tell them about the cost of unlocking as that are the terms usually for prepaid phones.

Just tell them no Vodafone reception where you need to use it.

  • +3

    CHEAPER at WOOLWORTHS

Woolworths Carnegie (the old one) had these for ~$100 an hour ago. Bought one as a spare for my clumsy girls….don't tell 'em that….

    • +2

Got a picture? that's a pretty big deal if they have it too.

    • Proof? If so, do want.

  • Thanks op
got one today and unlocked for free at
    https://unlock.vodafone.com.au/voila/handsetunlock/self-serv…

    • Are you sure? Someone else posted they had to pay.

      • +1

i got my phone unlocked for free and using telstra sim now

      • +4

Seems these Vodafone online unlock codes are hit and miss. People are only reporting their own personal experience.

Looks like there are various batches of this Vodafone prepaid Sony XA, as early on some were even already unlocked, others had to find an unlock code with mixed success on the Vodafone website.

My early purchase from Target deal in January was expecting it unlocked or able to unlock free on their website with no luck.
After initial let down ( purchased this mainly because it covered all 3G/4G bands for all 3 telcos and planning on sim slutting/swapping around ), tried again on their website a few months later and worked for Free. Go figure!

        • +1

Haha thats funny although great it worked out too! Weird it took a while.

        • @superroach:

Actually, was just editing my comment, but too late. Too carried away with the unlock code to mention the full story. From the beginning it had really bad reception where I use it although my trusty Huawei Y6 Elite and other many phones work better here, so after reading online about similar issues around the world, I wrote it off as a bad model. After reading many happy users and asking questions, looks like I might have a lemon, so after talking to staff in Vodafone shop, they said they can send in for a repair/replacement even after I told her I bought it from Target. So might get back a new one that's locked, but hopefully picks up normal signal strength lol.

      • It seems Kogan sim works.

    • This website just sits spinning for me after I put in the IMEI and say that it was purchased at Vodafone… any ideas? Tried Edge and Chrome.

      • Even if website is working again 100%, still not guaranteed to get a free unlock. Keep trying. Was always a risk whether to get a free unlock with these as there have been mixed results here on Ozbargain and Whirlpool this year from various vendors.

    • Took me to the'unlocking fees' page and asking for $50 unfortunately

  • Got the free unlock on the vodafone website but had to use a pc , wouldnt work on mobile device

If i couldnt get it i prob would have returned the phone , the imei is visible on the box without opening plastic

    • was this a rev 1 or rev 2 phone ?

  • +1

After trying a few Woolworths stores in vain looking for $99 deal, I relented to Coles $129 deal here. Despite the tonnes of empty Xperia XA boxes on display, the first Coles didn't have any stock. The second store had one. Unfortunately no free unlock code for me from Vodafone self unlock site - quoted $25. The phone will be used on Vodafone network anyhow so not a big issue. Maybe I will try again in a few months time. Thanks OP for posting the deal, otherwise I would have missed it altogether.

    • +1

Got one from Big W price matched to Coles after checking five Woolies and three Coles.

Quoted $50 for an unlock through Vodafone so am trying a Canadian site linked to on Howard Forums that claims to do Vodafone Xperia XAs. Three day wait for the code though.

      • +1

How much AU$ did they charge? What/who is this Howard Forums?

      • How did you go? I would be happy with a 3 day wait to say $50!

        • +2

          I used worldgsmcodes.com. They charged $US16 (~$A21.50).

The order was placed on Saturday about 4.30PM AEDT and the code arrived in 4 business days on Friday at 1.30AM AEDT (despite being advertised as a '2-3 day' wait). Phone is now unlocked.

        • @MELso: Fantastic, thanks for the information! Still beats the $50 I paid to Vodafone last time!

Have you considered / tried contacting 'bagman' via a pm? I've heard that his turnaround time is a much quicker and quicker than your experience at worldgsmcodes.com.

        • +2

          @elektron:

Yes - pondered 'bagman's service but his website - https://unlockit.codes/ - was indicating an issue with Vodafone when I checked a few days ago. It seems to have been sorted out recently though.

        • @MELso: Cheers, thanks for that. If I end up getting the phone I'll try him first.

EDIT: Looks like the price is similar to what you paid, i.e. $22, but it should be a lot quicker than 4 days.

  • +1

No need to buy unlock code from any where. use this link its free.
    https://unlock.vodafone.com.au/voila/handsetunlock/self-serv…

    • As stated by many people here including myself, this only works for some, not all. At least not straight away.

      You might have got lucky.

    • cost me $25

      • Yep, me too. Got it direct from Vodafone before seeing the "Bagman" unlockit.codes website link. Can't win them all lol.

    • No need to be downvoted. If this works for some, then cool. I'll give it a try if I buy one.

    • Thanks man, this worked for me. Unlocked for free.

  • +1

Does this work with Android Pay?

    • +1

      yes it does

  • +1

Wanting 50 for me, is that bagman fellow still about?

    • +2

This is Matt's (Bagman) website link

      https://unlockit.codes/

      • +1

Thanks, actually opted to go with vodaphone. It's a second phone so the 365 day pre paid voice suits as I hardly ever dial out. One off data packs good too when I don't want to hammer work phones data allowance when away.

        • Good move as Vodafone works great in a lot of areas now as well as fast internet and offer better value.
