Free 200GB OneDrive Storage for Telstra Customers (New and Old)

3040

Was looking for free back-up storage and came across this. The interesting thing is although I "had" a Telstra broadband account 3 years ago, I still could use my Telstra online account and get the free 200 GB storage on OneDrive. Dunno if it's a mistake, but I'm not complaining!!!!
This is an ode to previous post of tightarse. But then again, may help a few new members

Documents/photos/videos cannot be larger than 10GB

You mean each right? Not total?

  • +16

This has been around for ages now, pretty sure it may be a dupe

  • +1

Hmmm… it looks like you have already redeemed this offer. You should now be ready to start saving important files to Microsoft OneDrive. If you haven't already done so, download the Microsoft OneDrive app to make it even easier to access your files. Data charges apply. Limit of one redemption per customer account.

    Need help? Read our FAQs.

    • I have the same message, many password resets later i still dont have access to OneDrive

    • Then why didn't you put it up on ozbargain? Cos I badly needed this and only found out now.. I'm sure a few members will love to know about this deal

    • Duplicate Guidelines.

      Post will stay.

      • +6

I posted this about a week ago and it was removed. I was told Long Running deals can't be duplicated.

        • I don't think that's correct and will be discussed for clarification.

        • @neil: Has it been clarified?

        • @sween64:

Yes, it was discussed, our moderation guidelines checked and a look at our history. Long running deals are treated the same as normal deals.

        • @neil: Thanks for the clarification.

        See here for the TWAM.

Can anyone provide any feedback on OneDrive vs Dropbox or Drive (google) ?

I heard that if you have many folders with lots of subfolders and files, OneDriver misplaces them or stops sync. And that if you have files with the same name but different folders, OneDrive fcks them up and replaces them.

Can anyone provide any feedback pls ?

I'm looking at switching to Outlook and still deciding if I should go Outlook or Google Suite for my personal email address. Want to ditch Dropbox and Fastmail for 1 year and see how it is.

    • +1

Nothing's as easy as Dropbox and hence the premium price. It lets you download very fast the folders are easily accessible.
Google drive is the next best according to my opinion. Cheaper and easy to sync
OneDrive was sorta ok compared to the above.i didn't have any issues in the last three years..have all my files there easily accessible.

      • +4

I like onedrive because it's integrated with windows and works with microsoft office. The collaborative feature allows more than 1 person to work on a document at a time, and it updates for everyone else within seconds. Really good for collaborative work, especially for an online course I'm doing which involves group work.

A bit hit and miss sometimes with the syncing but I'll accept that for the free storage and windows + word integration.

      • +3

Dropbox deleted my account because I wasn't active on it for 6 months or so. I used it as a specifically back-up Dropbox and thought my stuff would still be there. Alas, it was deleted and upon emailing I got no reply.

All that stuff is now out in cyberspace somewhere.

        • +1

Wow really they deleted it just like that?

        • +1

@garbagetnt: Yeah I just got an email one day saying "we deleted your dropbox account due to inactivity. Unfortunately we cannot recover any of your data. Have a nice day" kind of thing.
So as long as I live I am never having another Dropbox.

        • +2

one thing you can be sure is that microsoft aint gunna pull that shit anytime soon

i got an email with 3 months heads up that storage was full to clean up or upgrade my storage. after the expiry period the files were still there

        • +1

@furythree: Exactly why I have everything in both my OneDrive and Google Drive. I use my onedrive a lot more though as it ties in nicely with my laptop :)

    • +1

One drive copes so poorly with big files and downloading uploading
Would try dropbox but this is free

    • +1

I have about 60GB in OneDrive and it's a dream to use. The OCR of images works brilliant so search is fantastic, music syncing with Groove is handy and the integration with Windows 10 makes it easy no matter what device I'm on. I also prefer Outlook.com to Gmail and I use a hosted domain with G Suite today.

    • +1

Dropbox is the best of the lot, and most expensive for that reason. Also the neutral choice in the Apple vs MS vs Google fanboy war.
Lack of file history (last I checked) is what kills OneDrive and makes it unsuitable for multiuser shares (one idiot trashes OneDrive and it's screwed).
As single user bulk backup they are more equal.

    • +2

I've been using OneDrive for a few years now (home and work), and its definitely gotten a lot better in that time, to the point where I prefer it over Dropbox (collaboration with office files is fantastic, can have 5-6 people editing a word document at once).

Sync wise, the Onedrive for business cient is great, but I have had some issues with my home account (700gb+ including directories with several thousand photos in it). I suspect my issues are related to both the size of my storage and the number of files. The problems have been fixed by resetting the client (no re-downloading, but the client does need to re-index the files which in my case takes a few hours). I'm still working with Microsoft to get to the bottom of it.

Note that I have never lost files from either.

I would still take Onedrive over Dropbox, especially from a cost point of view (Onedrive home premium = ~$90/year for 5 clients, each with office and 1tb of onedrive).

Upload wise? Even with ADSL its a matter of rate limiting your uploads then forgetting about it for a month.

    • +3

      Thanks for the 200GB!

For personal email I would recommend Gmail. I tried Outlook and just didn't like it, keyboard shortcuts and UI/UX just for beginners. I have an work address I pay Microsoft $2.50 a month for OWA access, and my personal email has been Gmail for yonks.

I stopped using Dropbox, because my free usage is only up to about 12gb. I rely heavily on Google Drive because it is so connected to other apps, and I received 1TB free for 2 years as a Google Local Guide, which expires May 2018. I will then pay for 100GB for $2.50 a month or whatever it is.

I use https://www.insynchq.com/ instead of the Google apps because it works better for me, I have been using it for a few years and Google only recently came out with a decent app, but I will keep using it, as I have Prime.

At the moment I only use Onedrive to store my Onenote files, and recently started using it more to share photos for work as I found that someone else uploading to Gdrive uses their storage, not mine, even in a shared folder, unless they mark it "transfer ownership".

I only use 100GB out of 1TB on Google Drive, because I have a local backup which I rely on, using enterprise 8TB drive and 2x 4TB WD My Books and soon I will implement an off-site backup solution via NBN to my own private cloud (more drives which will live at my mum's), because I am just dealing with too much personal and business content to rely on any cloud service.

I also recommend SyncBackPro (not cheap).

    • OneDrive is the only one you can get decent amounts of GB for without paying.

    • FastMail do such a good job for me, I'd need a compelling reason to move.

What about trying Outlook for a month or two instead of ditching Dropbox+FastMail altogether?

      • I've been with FastMail for 3 years now. I've ditched them. The alternatives that I looked at, Zoho, Outlook, Gmail.

Why I moved away from Fastmail ?

        1. Slow to implement new things.
        2. No files integration, just a 90's file system.
        3. No Calendar integration. This was the turn down for me, if I want to create a calendar memo from a mail or set a reminder… open 2 tabs, copy email - past email, etc.
        4. You can't print the Calendar.
        5. No real phone app, just a custom interface for the web. It's frustrating in this day and age when you find an app for every mail out there, but Fastmail has nothing of sorts. Every time you open an email, go wherever in the mail, it's slow because of refreshing.

I liked Zoho the best and I would have went for it if my wife was on Zoho as well. I can link files like I do in Gmail but with no account, passed for now. It had almost everything I wanted from an email with good support, good organisation, etc etc etc. Too bad not many people are on it.

Outlook for me landed on the 2nd spot because:

        • Every new thing you open, opens a new tab (just like gmail)
        • Slow to load
        • Can't print the calendar in a good format, unless you print on an A3.
        • I'm scared of OneDrive misplacing my files as so many reports from users say so.

Gmail seems to be the best compromise out of the 3.
        What's bad about Gmail:

        • Everything is in new tab
        • Drive is the worst out of the three.
        • Good luck deleting your Google Photos.

I've hacked the Gmail account so I use custom domain for free, forever. What I pay for is 100Gb/year for now.

        • Oh I see — your use cases are totally different from mine. I use FastMail through macOS and iOS Mail (and other clients), and that integrates well with their native Calendar apps for me. I must say I've never tried printing the calendar.

You seem very thorough about figuring what you need, hope it serves you well.

    • I've had "my documents" compromised by onedrive installed on a windows machine. User error perhaps but the close integration meant total loss of an extensive mydocs, last backup about 12 months previously. Since this (and another incident) I no longer use the free personal 200gb, just onedrive enterprise account syncing to work laptop (through work email). I also noticed a lack of ease compared with google drive.

How do people use these cloud storage services with adsl2+ ? My whole internet connection becomes unusable when I am uploading anything. I do try to keep a copy of photos in the cloud but upload overnight.

    • -6

Yea I had that problem before NBN.. but now with www.buzztelco.com nbn I have almost 200mbps upload speeds

      • I have almost 200mbps upload speeds

        Umm… what?

        • Yea unbelievable

        • -1

@samsal46: Yeah, because there's no such thing as mbps, it's Mbps.

Also unless you're in a FTTP area like Newcastle that is currently offering 1000/400Mbps with MR, then your maximum upload would be 40Mbps, especially considering Buzztelco only offer 100/40Mbps max on their website.

        • @Porthos:https://photos.app.goo.gl/jXnvmhYxe21YC2j53
And sorry for forgetting to use capital M

        • @samsal46: Do the test again, this time on http://beta.speedtest.net and link to the results. You'll find that was just an error on the site you used. It's ok, I'll wait :-)

        • @Porthos: It's a bit pedantic to be calling him out over not using a large "m".

        • -3

@Daabido: Nothing to do with being pedantic, even if he'd said it correctly with it being 200Mbps upload speed, that plan isn't offered by any ISP on the NBN apart from MyRepublic in Newcastle as they offered the 1000/400Mbps plan there for FTTP.

Even AussieBB only offered a 250/100Mbps plan on selected POI's and Buzztelco don't offer anything higher than 100/40Mbps.

Next time read what I actually write instead of saying I'm being pedantic 👍

        • @samsal46: Still waiting. Considering you somehow went from a ~36Mbps upload yet now over 200Mbps somehow? Hmmmm…

        • +1

          Agree it's an error

        • @Daabido: there's a big difference between a millibit and a Megabit.

        • +2

@Porthos: I did read what you read. I had no problem with your explanation, which I thought was well described. And I for one am usually a stickler for correct use and capitalisation of units of measure, where appropriate. It was just your tone.

        • +1

@newdad: There certainly is. I have no problem at all with the correction. It was the tone. To a lot of people who are not computer literate when it comes to bits, bytes, GB / GiB, it doesn't take much time to explain the difference, or quickly link to a reference. Pedantic might have been the best description; flippant perhaps?

        • @Daabido: sorry, I should have been clearer with my sarcasm (and implicit criticism of the pendants). How the heck can you get a millibit?

        • +1

@Daabido: Tone is what you make it. If someone is going to make outrageous claims on something that is easily proven wrong, I'll call them out on it. Neg me all you want as well, I stand by what I said.

        • @newdad:

It's fine, just split the bit up, similiar to splitting the atom :P

      • but now with www.buzztelco.com nbn I have almost 200mbps upload speeds

        hahahahaha….thanks for that ;P

    • +1

I create 360 virtual tours for work, I just got back from the country, and have to upload 27GB of images (5000 jpegs) and on ADSL2+ this would choke my connection, everyone in the house would whinge and it would take about 3 days non-stop, or 6 days overnight.

Now on NBN I upload to the FTP at 700kbps (we used to use Google drive which would do it at 2MB/s) and the whole thing takes about 6 hours, and no one in the house even notices.

      • +2

This is the beauty of FTTP NBN! I upload at a solid 4MB/s to OneDrive or OfB, single thread. Asymmetric services are a balancing act between download and upload.

    • +1

They usually have a throttle option in the settings so you can set it to only consume 20% of your bandwidth.

    • +1

If youre upload bandwidth is saturated, your net slows to a crawl.

Get an app that can limit your speed, such as Netlimiter. Limit your upload to 80% of its max and you won't have this problem.

However, what is your upload speed? I had 1Mbps upload (capped to 80kB/s) on ADSL2+ and to upload 5GB of documents took about 500 hours. Not useable on ADSL2 imo.

    (profanity) Telstra

  • Maybe one day there might be free GDrive storage… Almost used up 15 GB

    • +1

You get free drive storage as gift when you contribute in Google contribute. Well.. atleast my friend got it when he reached level 6.

      • +1

Damn missed the Level 4 100GB offer by a few months, almost on level 5 now…

  • +6

Apparently works with $2 Telstra pre-paid. I got one a few months back while in between ISPs to use FON wifi, my house mate topped it up once since he was between carriers as well and needed some in-between service. This was all months ago and the account hasn't really been touched since. Not sure if the top-up was necessary to claim this deal, hope others can chime in on this.

    • Good to know. Got a few months remaining of my Samsung bonus after which i will get a $2 sim to get this offer. Way over the 15gb free allowance so going to have to find ways to get more data. This should solve my problem if it works with the $2 prepaid.

      • +1

once samsung bonus is finished, you have about 2-3 months where you cant upload but can still access the data, so you can postpone the upgrade a bit further if you dont need to upload

        • +1

I have all my devices auto uploading pictures so "can't upload but can still access" won't work for me unfortunately. I would have to get more storage allowance before my Samsung bonus expires. Thanks for letting me know though.

        • +1

          @Harshad: fair enough

i use googles free storage for photos and offline backup for original sized files

        • +1

@Harshad: with that use age scenario, better of with either google photos "high quality" (doesn't count toward useage) or if you have a plex pass, auto upload to your plex server (own storage on home server)

        • +1

@Steve K: Yes I am aware that google photos gives unlimited storage for photos with reduced resolution however I have been using onedrive for so long that moving everything over to google drive gives me nightmares especially with my 1Mbps upload speed.

The "open in word" feature of onedrive held me back too. But now that uni is done, i dont need that any more. Will give the transfer a go once I get NBN (with its faster upload speed) although I doubt it will be smooth sailing after reading about people's NBN woes on here.

No idea what plex is. Looking into it now.

    • +4
    • +2

actually works with a FREE telstra sim that you order online and they express post to you via TOLL within 3 working days

i tried this last week lol

  • +1

If you want more space you can get a lifetime licence 2Tb for US$50 on Stacksocial.com

    • Very bad reviews of the degoo storage if that's what you're implying.. would stay away.

      • +1

Whoops forgot to say who it's with. No its Zoolz.com. Multi platform (I think the degoo one is mobiles only).

  • You could give be 2000000 gigabytes and it'd still not be worth being a telstra customer.

    • +2

As far as I know You just need a Telstra account. Even a prepaid one and then redeem this offer, and use the OneDrive. Throw away the prepaid card which is usually there for 2$. Don't think this is a bad deal for $2

  • yeh i remember a similar post from sometime ago and i have signed up from back then. But good post for those who missed it last time.

  • -1

Telstra via Microsoft. Yet another account and more junk mail and text spam from MS. Telstra then sucks up most of your monthly allowance. What a great deal for the providers. Easier, faster and more secure just to get a spare SSD.

  • +1

It’s a pain after the 2 years as you pretty much have to buy a Onedrive plan to keep using. Yes you can still access the data, but after 2 years of gettting everything synced and configuring backup schedules etc, it’s just easier to buy the plan. I know coz I used this promo about 3 years ago. I’m certain Telstra gets a commission because of this which is why it’s free. Not saying it’s a bad deal and if the NBN was available for me then it would be fine to just re-upload to somewhere else. I guess in 2 years I “should” be able to finally get NBN…
O yer, you can’t add this to an existing onedrive account and need to create a new account with another emai address. (Might want to confirm though as I got this 3 years ago.)
Don’t forget that most school kids in private schools get free Office 365 accounts with 1tb storage per kid:)

    • +3

I don't agree about the OneDrive account statement. I used it with my existing account

      • +1

Good to know. I used it 3 years ago so it’s probably changed since then, or I did something wrong when setting it up. Thanks for the correction.

    • +3

Several things wrong with this comment
      - You can use it on an existing account
      - It can stack with any benefits you have (eg Microsoft Phone, Office 365 etc)
      - Within 2 years, there will most likely be another deal so you won't have to pay

Also personal opinion the NBN in my area is way worse than ADSL2+ ever was.

      • Yes, but is the upload still as bad as 1mb max? :)

        • +1

          1mbps? Or 1Mbps?
Because I'm not even reaching 1Mbps, I did a speed test then and got 0.89Mbps. My download is around 10.1Mbps.

And apparently this is "typical" internet speed lol

        • @pennypincher98:
Mbps, but I think that’s pretty obvious :)
I’m very close to the node, so I’m getting pretty close to 1Mbps. Not that it makes much difference in uploading. Can’t complain for ADSL though.
          Pasted from router
          Maximum Line rate
          0.94 Mbps 24 Mbps
          Line Rate
          0.94 Mbps 20.88 Mbps

        • @Maddman: Yeah I thought so too :)
My speeds on ADSL2+ were around 20 download and around 3.3 or so upload (Max 10 apparently but never got close)

So yes NBN has crippled my network speeds.
