Does anywhere in Australia actually have hard water? I know Sydney certainly doesn't, as I've never had to remove calcium deposits from my kettle.
It was an issue when I lived in Europe though.

    • Melbourne doesn't either.

    • Generally our water is fairly soft. When I lived in Sydney I would get deposits (albeit small) on the bottom of our kettle and a bit of vinegar a couple of times a year got rid of it.

Where we are now in northern NSW the water is still relatively soft, but the calcium deposits in the kettle, on taps and the shower screen show it's still there. With an expensive coffee machine, prevention is far better than cure. Paying a tech to descale in a couple of years could cost a lot of $. I know people will say just descale, but you run the risk of dislodging pieces which can lodge in the wrong place. (Plus the taste remains for a while)

I use these filters for dropping water into a non-Sunbeam machine and refill the cartridges with new ionising media bought by the kilo - which makes it quite cheap to use.
