Meh, top spec'd model for that price maybe. Way too risky buying overseas for a laptop.

  • +2

Hmm will also be charged import tax on this. They need a official store in Australia already :(

  • +2

Pretty good specs except for (lack of) Thunderbolt 3 port.

    • Thunderbolt 3 was developed by Intel[48] and uses USB Type-C connectors.

However you might mean Mini DisplayPort? It was used by Thunderbolt 1 and 2.

      • +2

All TB3 are USB Type-C. But not all Type C are Thunderbolt 3's.

  • IMHO It makes no sense to buy this with MX 150 graphics, when you can but numerous similarly specced units with a i5 7XXX CPU with GTX 1050 4gb graphics for roughly the same price, give or take $100. MX 150 graphics is for light systems - 1.2-1.7kg.

    • +1

I guess the "advantage" of MX 150 in this case is 2GB of dedicated GDDR5.

In other words, the MX150 won't steal memory from the OS, so 8GB would be fully available to User programs.

Q: have you got examples of "similarly specced units with a i5 7XXX CPU with GTX 1050 4gb graphics for roughly the same price, give or take $100"?!

      • +8

Dell Gaming laptops have been regularly going at sale at this price point with a 1050Ti 4Gb and they include local warranty.

        • I couldn't have said it any better.

        • +1

Right but these don't match the build quality here. Aluminium build, pcie ssd, small bezels…this is more in line with an xps than a plastic Inspiron. Not saying I would buy this, just saying the comparison isnt really valid

    • similarly specced units with a i5 7XXX CPU

All similarly specc'd 7th Gen i5 ULV CPUs are dual core, this one is a quad core, which is new for the 8th generation. MX150 graphics is fine, if you don't game (and most people looking at this sort of machine wouldn't be anyway), there is absolutely no difference between a GTX 1050 and MX150.

      • If you don't game or do graphic intensive work, save yourself $300-$500 and get something with integrated Intel graphics.

        • What's $800 - $1000 with a quad core?

      • @psterio - Hrmm, that's not true.
The MX150 is a replacement for the 940MX - they're roughly the same in performance except the MX150 is newer tech and less power hungry.

The 1050 is considerably better than the MX150 for gaming, and the previous comments were of the 1050Ti which is even better again.

I'm a bit of a Xiaomi fanboy (and I also have the original i5/940MX version of this laptop), but even I would probably get one of the Inspirons that was advertised here recently with the 1050Ti in it for a similar price.

I got my Xiaomi laptop for about $900'ish when they first came out.
When you start going over the $1300 mark, you're no longer THAT much cheaper than the local alternatives.

        • +1

I also have the original i5/940MX version of this laptop

I might be mistaken, but isn't this Xiaomi's first 15" laptop? I thought their previous laptops were all 12"-13".

I think it also depends on how much a user wants to prioritize gaming; most Inspirons I've seen are significantly bulkier and probably have poorer build quality than this.

          (I didn't neg you.)

        • +1

@Zoetrope: Yes, you're right regarding the size - I originally thought this was the 13" i7 version that they've brought out with the fingerprint scanner etc.
I have the 13" with the 940MX, but the reference to the MX150 and 940MX is the same, but the overall pricing is probably not quite as bad, given this is a 15"

But I still think these would need to be closer to $1100/$1200 for most people to jump onboard as there's too many competitors in or around the $1300'ish mark.

You're right regarding the bulkiness I would imagine - Dell's Inspirons are not great in that department.
Xiaomi have done a great job with the aesthetics and I especially love that about my Air 13 … although it does get a little toasty at times which is probably why the MX150 is needed here as it has a lower TDP.

And if you don't game (and most people looking at this sort of machine wouldn't be anyway), there is absolutely no difference between 2 core 7200U and 4 core 8250U either.

So what's your point again ?

        • +1

Gamers are a very small proportion of people who need CPU power. I do a lot of simulations in Matlab, having a quad-core significantly cuts down my processing time vs. using a dual-core and I've verified this many times over.

You missed the point of what I said - which was that not everyone needs (or wants) powerful discrete graphics and that there's nothing wrong with people buying what they need and what suits their workload.

  • +5

Great looking build quality and specs on this device, given the price. However I would never buy something this expensive from the Chinese resellers like Geekbuying - warranty is a barely existent pain in the ass

    1080p on a 15 inch panel? That can't be fun…

  • 4 cores 6 threads. Wat.

    • You've a keen eye. 👍👍👍

      Updated.

  • I wonder if they'll refresh the 13.3 model with coffee lake

  • 6th gen vs 7th gen vs 8th gen??

I wonder why places are still selling 6th gen when there is an 8th gen. But then again what advantages really does a 6000 or 7000 have over the equivalent 8000?

    • +2

8th gen has a big advantage where the i5's are quad instead of dual core.

      • -2

It's less than 10% in single threaded tasks, that's pretty much all tasks you will be using laptop for. There's no real world difference between 6th and 7th gen either.

      • Yeah okay that's quite an advantage. And then less than 10% is alright.

Right time to buy a 7th gen cheaper as they are making way for the 8ths?

  • I like this part the most "ROM: 256GB PCIe × 4 NVMe SSD, 1.5GB"

Since 80s never ever saw a computer with that huge size of ROM, barely I remember my Apple IIe only has 64kb of ROM.
