I bought 64 GB for $279 last month

  • Battery won't last more than 16 hrs

    • +1

      Depends on usage.

      • +3

I am not heavy user. I love this phone. But just explaining what I am facing

    • +3

Turn off the bluetooth location thingy as that's a huge battery killer.

Want more battery then install Lineage OS. Mine now lasts two days with medium use. Technically this means functions like Android Pay can no longer work but you can get around it with Magisk etc. Netflix you just install from the APK.

One advantage is you can unlock with fingerprint without having to wake the device first. I've read there were problems with the fingerprint sensor but I've had none.
The negative is you lose the Xiaomi Camera App which is brilliant. Open Camera etc work ok but not as good.

You have to apply to Xiaomi to be able to unlock it via their software, and it has a 3 day wait even when they authorise it, but I had no problems with "I want to try a different OS".

As for the phone itself, it's awesome. Incredibly fast and I was surprised to find some apps I use had such variation in the colours as my other devices couldn't show them.

edit: One last thing, get a silicon case as the back is slipperier than ice.

You can install Google Camera Mod with HDR+ and it's absolutely better, perhaps more than the original camera app. SOT depends on usage but definitely can last more than a day. I'm on Resurrection Remix now and still love this phone after trying HTC 10 and S7 Edge. Highly recommend this little one.

        • -1

Any thoughts on Camera vs S7 Edge? Particularly indoor / low light and autofocus performance. Thanks.

        • @BartholemewH:
For outdoor photo, Mi5 and HTC 10 are quite similar but not as good as S7 edge. However, for indoor/low light photo, Mi5 is not comparable to S7 edge, even with the mod. Autofocus of Mi5 is pretty quick though. I guess they're in different price range eventually.

        • @Wuuuleee:
Thank you, this helps my decision.

        • What's the app called?

        • +1

          @BrodenIt:
You can search Google camera mod with hdr+ for Mi5 or have look here
          [forum.xda] (https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/forum.xda-developers.com/mi-…)

    • Mine has never died before I charge it. May be lineageos though…

  • +5

Best phone I have ever owned, straight up. LineageOS is perfect!

    • How is the camera quality?

  • +1

Sleek, classy, powerful phone. That's the cheapest price I've ever seen, beating banggood and gearbest.

  • Dual 3g/4g? Most dual sim phones are 2g only for the secondary sim, which is useless these days.

    • Yes 3g / 4g

      • Lol so you're aware of this yet you said this? You still didn't explain what you meant.

        • +1

          Pls see. I obliged you.

    • Most modern phones these days support 4G/3G. Agree that 4G/2G is basically useless from a dual SIM perspective now though.

  • +4

Great price for a phone from Xiaomi which has NFC.

  • Of the Xiaomi phones in the circa $180-$260 price range, how does this phone (Mi 5) compare to the Redmi Note 4x ??
I really have little knowledge of the Xiaomi phones - so many different phones and models.

    • +1

Smaller screen, better camera, better processor, full hd. There's probably more but that's all I can remember

      • Thanks for the quick reply.
From my point of view I want the phone which is as compatible as possible for Australia, and able to install all the usual Android apps from the Google Play store.
Is Snapdragon better or some of these other processors I am not familiar with.
They all seem well built with good screens.
Within limits, the bigger the screen would be better.
Nearly hit the button on the Redmi Note 4x for $145 but the 16 GB of memory held me back, and the 32 GB version was close to $200.

        • This will be your phone

        • +3

The Mi5 is basically a Samsung S7. Get rid of MIUI and you have one great little phone.

        • +2

          @ghoulie1: This.

The prices fairly accurately reflect the performance difference though only between these two phones. The Mi5 is damn cheap for it's performance and quality.

        • -1

@ghoulie1: in a metaphysical sense, they all are. But the camera sucks on the MI5.

        • +1

It should be noted that the 4(X) has a micro sd slot (and the 5(X) does not) so you can make up the storage difference pretty easily. The Redmi also has much better battery life, if that is important to you.

  • White is also $263.

    • Thanks. I have updated post to reflect it.

  • +2

If you're going to buy this phone, consider the Mi5s as well for $295 (on eBay using the 15% off code phone15). Faster and has a better camera + various other minor improvements.

  • -2

was tossing up between this and the previous note 4x deal… overall the snapdragon 625 almost holds up against the 820 and cost $120 less, so I went with the note 4x. Granted the mi 5 is a beautiful phone though.

  • Guys, do not buy this phone, While it is bloody fast with Lineageos, the build quality is awful..

I was out one night and had the phone in my jacket pocket. The thing bent resulting in the rear glass breaking. I ordered another piece of glass from china and in the resulting month while waiting for it to arrive, I was constantly straightening the phone out. When the glass finally arrived, the phone was so dis-formed that the glass cracked within 10 minutes of putting it back on.

I now bought an aluminium bumper case which solves the phones poor structure, however it f***s the radio signals so you can barely have a phone call. (This is on Telstra btw).

Surprisingly, the phone screen is still intact…

    Indeed, Buyer beware.

(EDIT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2jav7UdQtE - I had seen this before but ignored his advice. Bad decision on my behalf.)

    • +4

Wow, do not buy this phone? We got two of these phones, bloody brilliant build quality! No issues with connections, superior craftsmanship, way better than the samsungs, iphones with a jaw dropping price. Yours is a dud, mate.

      • +1

Such variance in reviews. I cant imagine how a bendy phone can be a one off defect though?

        • I guess if you're not putting the phone in right jeans, you won't be bending it.

I just know most phones can handle my "abuse" should I say. My last phone was the one plus 3 which I screwed when trying to replace the screen. That thing was built like a tank.

Maybe mines a lemon but the guy who put the video up above does his tests on many phones. Funnily enough, the mi6 is built well according to him so might wait till the mi7 to bite haha

      • Anecdotal but mine has been fine as well from a build quality point of view, better than the last Samsung I had.

    • I can say this phone has good built quality. Yesterday, I was ride my bike going downhill at over 35km/h and phone just popped out of my phone holder (cheap holder) when I hit a small tree branch thinking the worst when I rode back and pick up the phone but surprisingly it only has a small crack glass on the corner, LCD and everything still working.

Battery lasts about 2 days average use- couple phone calls and bit of surfing.
Camera is on par with S7 edge in day light but not so good in low light.

  • Hi

Using this phone for more than a year, no issues at all, signal is good I am on boost, I do not use any phone cases though. Battery goes more than a day, if you are using Google assistant the battery drains fairly quickly but still lasts. I dropped the phone on driveway, luckily the back panel hit the floor instead of the front, the back panel got smashed and I had to replace with plastic case. Android pay works with no issue with the NFC.

So far happy with the phone I bought 64 gb it at around 480+ a year back.

  • -1

Does it gave SD card slot?

    • No

      • +2

is 32 gb really enough in today's world to store musc, movies, aps, photos?

        a 64 gb version maybe a better option…

Big mistake not having a card slot. Thought everyone else already learmt this lesson.

        • +2

it's a revolutionary feature to not having an expandable physical storage

hence the need of cloud storage, or fork out more $ for higher storage model.

same goes to headphone jack, they're all wonderful revolutionary features by not having one.

        • @phunkydude: sounds like a Jobs wannabe. 32gb for an android is not gonna cut it. Adding a navigation software, a few banking apps, uber and a bunch of other fast food apps (so that you can get the most out of ozbargain) then you'll find yourself constantly cleaning cache and deleting videos and photos.
Cloud computing is good for backing up your photos and videos but videos take forever to be uploaded given most footage is in full hd/4k. And who's gonna download a 500mb clip to show a friend and delete it right afterwards then do it again next day for another family member.

        • +1

          @lgacb08:

          forgot my sarcasm tag ;)

        • @lgacb08: I have the 32gb and have 12gb free. I am a heavy user and rarely delete stuff from it.

  • Is this Chinese rom? I need one with line call recorder.

  • My partnere mi5 is going very strong. Haven't had issues with the quality… but have read it can bend easily. So far we are very happy wth it (would make a good replacement for a s5 if urs breaks).

  • I've just used GSM Arena to compare this to my current phone - Sony Xperia Z2 and they look pretty much the same. Would I be right in saying that? I'm looking for an upgrade under $400. Any recommendations?

    • $450 OnePlus 3t @ shopmonk

    • samsung a5 is under $400 and has pretty decent specs, https://shopmonk.com.au/samsung-galaxy-a5-2016?storage=331&c…

      • Is the moto G5 plus any good?

    • Stick with the Sony for a bit longer. It's a premium phone and while there will be a performance improvement going to the Xiaomi it's not going to be huge. Wait for the Mi7, if it's not just a minor refresh.

      • Its on its last legs - USB charging doesn't work anymore, has to be magnetic and battery doesn't last a full day.

  • Good seller highly recommended

    • Delivery to Sydney was 7 days. My phone arrived today.

  • Can anyone provide some advice to a noob on whether I'd have any issues using this on Telstra or Virgin networks in Aus? From what I can dig up, there's no problem with 4G/LTE but don't want the missus reminding me in ten years of 'that time I bought a useless phone' for her.
    Thanks in advance.
