Nokia 3:

Sim: Dual Sim Stand-By (4G-2G)?

Cute little phone if you are nostalgic/want fast updates. Stock Android 7 with updates. Android Oreo is promised for Nokia 3, 5, 6. My dad's Nokia 6 is on the September 2017 patch already.

Apparently you get good battery life (84h on GSMArena test) on the Nokia 5.

Dual SIM 4G/3G on Nokia 5

Can add the Nokia 5 (TA-1053 dual sim variant) to the list. Put my Boost SIM in slot 1 and Amaysim SIM in slot 2 and I'm getting 4G on Boost and 3G on Amaysim simultaneously.

    NFC?

    • +3

Yes to both according to GSMArena.

    • +13

      NFI.

  • +3

    nokia!!

    • +3

HMD uses Nokia name under licence

      • +15

But they are right outside Nokia's HQ. Staffed by former Nokia staff.

They Nokia enough for me. Blackberry, Motorola etc are Chinese owned.

        • +2

Some had some roles in the old Nokia
most of them worked for Microsoft that took Nokia over
the CEO left not long ago
Nokia 8 is OK 5 and 6 overpriced for what they are

        • @songjing:

TAIPEI, Taiwan — FIH Mobile, a subsidiary of Hon Hai Precision Industry, will take over Microsoft's feature phone business for US$350 million, the U.S.-based company said on Wednesday, May 18.

As far as I understand that only covers feature phones. The smartphones are designed by HMD Global and manufactured by Foxconn in the old Nokia factories.

        • -1

          @songjing: Taiwan/China - same thing

  • +5

Screen resolution is a bit meh tho

    • Yes true

    • +7

2+16GB is a bit meh for 2017 also.

You can buy much better specs for the money if you look to the chinese brands like Xiaomi or Lenovo.

      • +1

no band 28 on xiaomi , but yes fhd is a must have.

i was at jb hifi and some of the nokia (nokia6) $399 had fhd as i was considering as replacement for a water damaged moto , was looking for moto z play.

and you will get more ota updates from the nokia than a xiaomi in australia.

a killer deal nokia6 would get my attention

    • +5

Stresses the Snapdragon 430 less and gets more life out of the battery too. Plenty of users care not a hot for FHD screens.

      • +3

This, if you can barely tell the difference and it makes no difference to day to day use, who cares? I would rather have the better battery life every day of the week. 720x1280 is perfect for a 5" phone IMO

        • +1

I use as a daily an s5 and with a data share sim in my note 2.

Its still easy on the eyes at 720p a 5.5inch screen.

You can see the difference between both but really it shouldnt effect the user at all.

    • +5

Think of it as a Retina display and you will love it

  • interestingly the MTK chip gets frequent updates

    • +1

AFAIK it's got nothing to do with the chip, all Android Nokias get updates asap, they are pretty much vanilla Android.

    • The Nokia 3 has been a little slower than the others to get feature updates because MediaTek is slow at updating.

However I'm told the security updates are still quick for it.

      • thats what i meant, mediatek some refer to as the worse in their source code openness so im wondering how this is different

        • Yeah Nokia HMD said that MediaTek was being slow with their rolling out of new code for new Android versions.

That's why until recently the Nokia 3 was stuck on Android 7.0 (but with latest security patches; because those don't need new code from Mediatek).

          It's jumping directly from 7.0 to 8.0.

        • @StrayfireX: wait for nokia 2 ;) snapdragon 210/215 approx $129 aus

  • +1

I bought one yesterday, forgot to post it up to OZB so well done OP. This is a fantastic price for the 5, over $100 less than bricks-n-mortar RRP.

  • +9

I got one and it goes like this.

    Pros
    - Fast Updates (already on September)
    - Stock Android
    - Build quality is fantastic, it really blows your mind, solid Aluminium piece, feels great in the hand.
    - Fingerprint scanner is good and accurate

    Acceptable
    - Camera quality (for the price)

    Cons
    - Could be faster, sometimes opening an app takes a bit longer than it should (running Qualcomm 430)
    - 16gig is pretty sad nowdays, SD card is required
    - Stock Camera app takes ages to open, like seriously slow.

Overall I would rate it a good 6 or 7 out of 10.

Im personally using it as my daily driver atm. I am now keeping an eye on the Nokia 8, in regards to price cuts in the future.

  • +5

I'd choose it over an iPhone X

    • +7

      yea for 7x the price.

  • is this au stock?

    • +1

I think this is overseas stock being shipped out from Australia.

      Item location:
      Regents Park, NSW, Australia

MobileCiti sells a different variant of the Nokia 5; which I believe is single SIM but AU stock.

See this deal if you want AU stock ($260): https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/329591

      • Thank you so much!

      • yes I think so

        Item specifics said,
Dispatch: From Taiwan if Non-AU address was provided.
Warranty: Seller warranty, repaired by manufacturer
From oversea by express if stock shortage in AU
        User Manual: In Foreign language

  • Will this ever get updates?

    • It has gotten security updates every month. As for Android Oreo we don't have much prior evidence to work with.

      • Nice!

  • Just a warning before you guys jump into the Nokia deals.

I bought a Nokia 6 from qd_au and it arrived on tuesday. I was trying to setup for my wife's birthday present for next week.

Tonight I tried to continue the setup and when I tried to power on the phone it went into bootloop?!

I am now contacting qd_au to see what i should do, but my plan on giving out a phone as a birthday present is now definitely ruined…

    • +2

not ruined she will think you are a hero when you get it fixed ,

  • I am so tempting to get the 5 for a play and see how it goes.

  • Nokia 3 states Dual Nano-SIM (4G + 2G) so no use in Oz? Nokia 5 states Dual Nano-SIM (4G + 3G).

  • information from other shop said Nokia5 (TA-1053) has 4G+2G

    https://www.uniquemobiles.com.au/nok-5-dual-sim-ta-1053-4g-1…

    • +2

I would trust Whirlpool more. Typically shops say 4G+2G to cover their asses.

      • +1

The Nokia 5 can be had for $209.10 at the moment with the ebay 18% off code, tempting.
