  • Well worth 140, good spot.

  • Diff between basic & premium? Just HD size? Most put an SD card in the wii U so it doesn't matter too much?

  • What game, going cheap, would be worth getting with this deal?

    • Jailbreak the console https://wiiu.guide/ then get all the games you want for free

      • That's called piracy. Way to support the developers.

        • +4

Just like developers supported this console.

        • -1

@chu-oh: Wouldn't they have to support the console for you to even be able to pirate their game in the first place? The idiocy in your comment is unbelievable.

          Edit: words

        • @dano: They're probably referencing how Nintendo is trying to pretend the Wii U no longer exists, and are even dropping online support this year.

        • +1

@BradleyDS2: Online support isn't being dropped yet, only Miiverse. You will still be able to play all your games online. The Wii U was a huge failure. Nintendo has simply moved on. They supported it for as long as possible and they released a lot of great games for it. This absolutely does not justify piracy.

        • @dano: I agree it doesn't justify piracy, and it's a shame seeing a Nintendo console fail so miserably, but I don't feel that the console was properly supported either, unlike the 3DS. I am still looking forward to my WiiU though, and will be modding it because the Smash WiiU modding scene is a LOT more active than the 3DS one.

  • +2

There is only one basic unit left. Good luck.

  • +1

Cheapest I could find on gumtree was about $150.. good find

  • +1

too bad there's no pick up option. :*(

  • +2

Theres going to be a lot of sad people at 4pm.

  • Looks like someone couldn't resist the urge and bought the basic pack before 4pm…

  • +2

    Yeh out of stock

  • +3

I wonder how low the WiiU will go before the price only goes up? The WiiU is a modders dream console and I want to stock up when the price drops as low as it'll get.

    • +1

Same here. I need a spare.

    • Excuse my ignorance but is that mainly due to it being able to be play Gamecube, Wii and Wii U games?

      • Yes it'll play all of those bit-perfectly from a hard drive, plus it'll do it all over HDMI.

        • +2

Did the same mod to a Wii a while ago but just never got to really enjoy all the games I loaded so decided not pursue the same with the Wii U. Find myself spending a ton of time on mods and configurations and then hardly playing the actual games.

        • You gotta do some research into what the good games are. There are loads of gems on Gamecube, Wii, and WiiU but there are also a lot of games that aren't worth five minutes of your time. But I know what you mean about enjoying the challenge and promise of modding, but then not taking much advantage of it when it's done. Like when I fully rooted my spare Android tablet, it felt good but I couldn't think of a single thing I wanted that needed a root for.

        • You're absolutely right and there was way too much shovelware on the Wii. I'm sure the softmod I have installed was one of the first around so will need to spend some time looking into see if it's easy enough to install a Gamecube emulator without breaking anything and weeding out the bad Wii games.

        • I can actually help you with that as I’ve just done the same. Basically just get “Nintendont” for your softnodded wii. It is very easy to get running and iirc it doesn’t use any ciios or miios. Then just choose Nintendont in the options of your favourite loader. Nintendont will play almost all GameCube games perfectly (whereas the old diios miios ran games imperfectly, and often didn’t support disc audio streaming at all), Nintendont will be identical to the real thing. And with options like non stretched widescreen for games that normally don’t support it, so it’s better than the real thing.

@cheepo: The goal is too Mod these consoles and the 3DS, and then give them to your family e.g neices/nephews or cousins, Me and You are too old to play games"other then some steam games" but we can sure spread the Joy of games

        • +1

          @Most Wanted:
I still enjoy playing games on older consoles I originally owned and played. Certain Wii ones are a ton of fun to play regardless of age due to their simplicity. Had Wii Sports Bowling out with family not long ago and we had a blast.

Personally, I've just found that being spoilt for choice (cheap digital games on multiple formats, free monthly games on the Xbox etc.) and lack of free time seems to be the bigger problem. Bargain priced consoles and games posted on here certainly don't help the cause either.

I think I'm just now more selective on what I play as more responsibilities and important things have taken priority. I will be actually passing on modded consoles to the kids of a struggling family I am friends with this Christmas. Like you…I'm looking forward to seeing others enjoy and discovering these games for the first time.

        • @AustriaBargain:

Thanks for your help. I'll look into what you've suggested. Setting up GC games and Virtual console games were a pain if I remember correctly and ended up just uninstalling most of it and sticking to USB loader for Wii games.

There's only a small handful of GameCube games I really want to check out so hopefully I can figure it out providing it doesn't require a complete overhaul of the original mod and it can be easily done through the Homebrew channel.

        • @cheepo:

Check out the compatibility list for Nintendont, it’s practcally all solid green.

          https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Nintendont_Compatibility_List

Loading GameCube games is as easy as loading wii games, and there’s no messing around, iirc you pretty much just drag the Nintendont files into your sd or hdd (however you originally set it up).

GBA Temp forums can walk you through the process, they are always happy to help. Here’s their guide:

          https://gbatemp.net/threads/nintendont.349258/#Setup

        • @AustriaBargain: Try Lucky Patcher. You can also do some other stuff like replace the stock YouTube app with an add free one, or install adblock for the entire tablet.

        • @AustriaBargain: Thanks for the links to the compatibility list and guide. They've been bookmarked and will dedicate some into over a spare weekend. Seems fairly straightforward at a glance.

Look forward to reviving the Wii again and it getting some time outside the cupboard! Much appreciated.

  • ALL OVER RED ROVER

  • +2

Lol out of stock at 4pm sharp.

  • +2

    Thanks, just got one!

Was a close call, since I entered the code too many times before it activated, so it wouldn't let me enter any codes. Had to close ebay, reopen it, find the wiiu again, login to PayPal and try the code again, didn't work since I tried it as the clock ticked over to 4:00 but an attempt immediately after worked.

Surprised at how quickly they sold out!

  • Thanks OP, got a Premium (basically clicked checkout right as the clock ticked over 4pm). Lucky it seems as it sold out quick!

5 left, jump in fast if you want one!

  • +1

Holy shit lucky I kept checking - glad to have snagged one before they ran out.

I have a bunch of Wii u games and I am super worried that they will be useless when the gamepad ever dies.

    Nice to have a spare

  • This is 90 bucks (a bit less) cheaper than a new xbox 1s with 2 games, is there any reason I would go for this ahead of a current gen system that's marginally more expensive, new and plays 4k bluray? I can think of exclusive titles, and maybe because I already own an xbox and want a wii u also. Or are my reasons enough for most people?

    • +2

With a little work, this console can play every single WiiU, Wii, Gamecube, (many N64), (many nintendo DS), SNES, GBA, NES game every made, for free.

      • -3

Ok, but you can play everything up to n64 with a Raspberry Pi, or are you saying it will play originals of those? (not cartridges surely?)

        • Nah, not cartridges lol. And you're right about emulating the older consoles on the rPI3.
The Wii U can play some N64 titles BETTER than the rPI3. Eg. Pokemon Stadium (1 and 2), because the N64 emulator created by Nintendo, is better than the opensource one.

Also, the Wii and Gamecube playback is native (not emulated) so you get full 480p/480i native glory!

Such a brilliant catalogue for an underrated console, and who knew it was capable of such greatness (in that tiny form factor) - BOTW is truly stunning and a game of the generation.

    Enjoy. :)

  • -1

I wish I'd been paying attention here today, instead of playing BOTW on my Wii U. I need a spare.

    • -3

Spare? thats evil man, People with Kids need this more then you

    • There is one more stock available. Hurry. I too bought a spare - I don't trust the longevity of my existing unit.

      • -6

        You X853 , are a total (profanity)

        • +1

          No, they are not.
Nothing wrong with buying a spare.
I have a spare of every console tucked away.
If I can't get a good deal from this one, I'll end up paying more and buying from the scalpers who bought the 86 sold in this deal.

        • People with 'kids' don't need shit

Don't blame me for being a dumbass and having kids. Procreating - seems like a terrible financial decision to me brav.

Why should sensible people suffer for your poor decision making skills, son?

Great price - especially when you can mod this console 😀

    Back in stock

  • Got one woohoo!, still more in stock

  • +1

    It's back in stock everyone

  • +1

Got the premium. Thank you OP and @idonotknowwhy?

  • Already have one, but always wanted to get a back up and buy it at its lowest point, the wii u only sold 13 million or so, so i think it'll be sort after.

  • so… just bought this … what else do i need? i suppose another game pad and some games? its for the kids .. not me … the last console i owned was a dreamcast.

    • you may want another controller (can use an old wii remote for a lot of games or a wii u pro controller). You dont need another gamepad. Then grab a few nintedo exlusive games (super mario 3d, donkey kong, zelda BOTW ect)

      • any advantage to having 2 controllers with the screen?

        • No, unless your old one breaks.

        • @brnaodn: can u play 2 player games using the screen controller. . Ie each person using their own controller on the controller screen?or do u have to play on the tv?

        • +1

@hippyhippy: No, they announced that you could connect two game pads but no game was actually made that ever used it, so they never released the feature, and you can only use one at a time.

Unlike the Nintendo Switch, The Wii U ultimately is centred around the TV. You can do first party singleplayer games without the TV if you're in streaming range from the console. For multiplayer one gamepad and normal remotes are used.

        • No, is use the game pad and a pro controller. Then you'll be able to play 99% of two player games

        • @Ronniefromdashore: Sorry for hijacking the thread, do you have any recommendation on where to look for the original controller? Or the (I assume) fake ones on ebay is still worth the price?

      • +1

If you mod it you can also use this so you can use a Playstation, Xbox or other controller.

    • The pro controllers are excellent. Super comfy and the charge lasts for like 80 hours

    • +1

Assuming you don't want to pirate or mod:

Mario Kart 8 is great for everyone. Second best mario kart ever imo.
Smash Brothers 4 is great (assuming it's not too violent for your kids)
BOTW is single player but a lot of fun, even with more than 1 person watching / talking about. Best game on the platform imo. Also has a little combat involved.

I'd also get a Wii U pro controller (if you softmod the console, you can use pretty much any USB controller instead)

  • +1

Always wanted a Wii U. Got the wife and kids hooked on Mario Kart for the Wii, so Mario Kart 8 on Wii U will be even better! Good thing the Wiimotes work with the Wii U as well. :D

    • +2

Not only wii motes, check this out

Everyone thinks that modding is just for piracy, but I'm modding mine for game mods, and stuff like this. I own a Switch and love my pro controller, I'm so glad I can use it with the Wii U as well!

      • Damn that's really useful! Cheers mate!

        • I only found out from idontknowwhy mentioning it in their comment above :)

Also, since you're going to be playing Mario Kart 8, give mods for it a google. There's custom tracks and everything, and if you want to play the Wii version, check out Mario Kart Ctgp Revolution. I used to love playing it!

        • @BradleyDS2: haha I've played an older version of the Ctgp and it was annoying at times with some glitches here and there. Was nice to play more tracks though.

        • @BradleyDS2: I was vague, you provided good links. You can have the credit ;)

        • @Munki: I never had too much trouble with bugs, maybe I didn't play it enough xD

It also has online support, which is great!

        • @idonotknowwhy: Thanks, but I never would have even considered that it would be possible without you, I was about to fork out the money for a Wii U pro controller!

I'm glad to see that the Wii U modding scene is as active as I hoped, as someone who mods 3DS consoles. It seems to be a bit further behind than the 3ds scene (I mean, I modded a New 2DS XL today using a a DS lite, a magnet and a DSTT flashcart, faster than the older browser and dsiware exploits) but it's still very active and I see a lot of people work on both 3DS and Wii U mods. It's just a shame some people ruin the name of modding by treating it like it's only for piracy.

  • Thanks OP, bought one.

Anyone found a cheap way to play with the gamepad in a car? I know a product called maxplay car adapter exist but it's a bit pricey at ~$70.

    • Better you than me, I was just about to buy a spare, but didn't make it in time due to cashrewards 😅

      • I actually bought 2 hours ago but just had the time post about it :D. However, I've still indirectly contributed to the fact that you missed out on the second one :)

        • -1

          Ah, okay.

If you get the chance, it would be worth buying an extra, the gamepads sell alone for $150 and it's worth having a spare around just in case.

        • @BradleyDS2:

My son has been asking for one for years. the offer was too good to be skipped honestly. Now with the availability of easy modding (thanks for the information above), we won't hopefully need to change platforms for several years. therefore, a spare console makes perfect sense. Cheers!
