Samsung 960 evo M.2 NVMe SSD 250gb $159, 500gb $312 (3.2GB/s read & 1.9GB/s write) @ Umart

I went to pickup some thermal paste yesterday and decided to do a quick price check on a couple things. I was previously looking at these drives on eBay with the 20% off via Futu, PC Byte, etc and it worked out to be ~$169 which isn't a big saving with MSY and Umart ($170) just around the corner from me. Cheapest previous deal as far as I know was $168.80 via Shopping Express eBay.

Great drive, running it on my 7700k Hackintosh as my main system drive.

        Can always Dual Boot

        • +1

That's exactly why I built a hackintosh, dual boot macOS and Win10 for HTC Vive

        • @zerocool: Do you have any driver issues in macOS? Does your build have switchable gfx?

        • @albert0pia:

No driver issues. NVME took a bit to get going but High Sierra natively supports this drive. I have a 980TI which I use as a primary graphics card because Davinci Resolve doesn't require a dedicated GUI card anymore.

        • @zerocool: Thanks for the info. Can I come to you for assistance when I decide to build one?

          Yes sure

Will this 250gb ssd work with it?
The ssd looks pretty long and I'm not sure if there is space or connectors in it to install. Thanks

Plus delivery, if you aren't fortunate enough to live near one….I hate being forced to create yet another account just to get a shipping quote!

    :(

  • These are insane! Windows or Linux, Boots in less than 5-second!
By the way for $7 more by it local.

    • SATA 3 boots in six seconds so no speed benefit really in these instances of NVMe over SATA3. I have the 250gb 960 Evo in my mi notebook air 12 and it runs fairly well

      • +1

Yes you should see how fast my Samsung 850 Pro SSD SATA3 boots Windows 10 at.

      • I said less than 5 seconds in general. It is not just the storage speed.

        • Does vary yes. Used an i7 Lenovo laptop that does it in six using NVMe. Yet i use code M3 with SATA and also does six seconds. Probably desktops faster.

  • I love my tech, but at 100 dollars premium over "slower" ssds, there's not much real life difference in performance. Or am I wrong?

    • +2

Thing I found is that in general application use, CPU's make virtually no difference. That is where M.2 NVME SSDs make the difference, it is the peppiness in getting things fired up over a SSD. Boot up speeds reduced, applications opening, load times reduced. Only by a second or a half, but it feels less frustrating. I own systems with HDD, SSDs and M.2 SSDs.

SSDs are still awesome though, it's just that tiny bit better. As for bang for buck, they are not worth it. To reduce that feeling of 'I'm in 2017, why does this shit still take so long?', I think it's worth it.

      You're mostly right.

I went from 500GB 850 EVO to 512GB 960 PRO. For gaming, there is no noticeable difference in loading times. This is due to bottlenecks elsewhere in the system. For booting into windows there might be a second or two difference. Maybe if you did video editing it will be faster. I haven't tried that.

For all other use, I have not noticed any appreciable difference.

The main difference will only be visible in benchmarks. In real world use, 500GB/s from SATA3 is plenty good.

As a 960 Pro owner, I would recommend EVO over the Pro. But if you go for SATA, even that is fine if you can get it cheap. The 960 Pro is not worth the premium.

Before someone claims my system isn't optimized for nvme, I have a gaming motherboard, Z270 with Kaby Lake, and two m.2 slots. One of them has a heat sink and shield. I also have more than enough PCIE lanes for it.

    • probably only for some added possible "future proofing" if buying a new computer, not really worth upgrading from an 850 at the moment

  • Anyone know where to get a good external case to use this as an external hard drive? Preferably with USB C to use with a 2016 MacBook Pro

  • Thanks OP. Ordered Monday for pickup at Broadway store and received automated response but queried yesterday and got a personal reply but no confirmation to collect/pay in-store. Was not in a rush but still. I cancelled today and ordered from the following deal instead https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/327885.
