Three years of Autodesk software for students with .edu emails. Either use a real school email or if you don't have one and you're a student, try searching for an online based one.

Not sure if it should be in the forums but, Go grab them!

    AutoCAD is basically the 2D/3D software used for design and drawing. Its probably more suitable for students in engineering etc. Still cost a bomb if you buy them yourself.

    Oh nice, AutoCAD just came out for Mac!

    This software is damn expensive (one single license is like US $4000, and you thought Windows Ultimate was expensive!)

    Autodesk student licencing has been around for years. It's just that recently they made it more convenient by increasing the licences from 1 year to 3 years.

      Yes they do. $400 to get perpetual license is still cheap imo.

    Yes - beware the educational autodesk water mark on all prints - just pirate it while you are at uni - no one is going to charge you etc… any university/tafe with decent degrees will have free software available for students regardless

    My firm just bought revit/acad… $8k per license up front plus a bit over $1k per year subscription per license - this is the price you pay for commercial software, let alone training costs - and that is at a discounted price! From now on you don't even get a disk with it…

    If you are an architecture/engineering/draftsmen student get out their and learn some of these programs (Revit is the next big thing - ignore microstation/archicad/etc) as employers will appreciate not having to pay or waste time training you!

      what's with the yearly subscription fee? do you get a new version every year? I Guess that's the same as buying a new version every 4 years, but if you factor in inflation…

        yes you get 'free' updates - so constantly stay current with the new version, but you also get a few extras like a bunch of free plugins, and beta versions of features before they are released in general etc. generally worth it to stay current. For a program like Revit which talks to other disciplines you have to be up to date otherwise the other firms can't use your model unless they run older software. revit in particular has still advanced a lot per year lately as it is relatively new and they are incorporating new extra features a fair bit - like full sun/locational modelling is in 2010, as well as volumetric 'sketch' modelling, and revit is soon to have full energy analysis built in probably for next year (as autodesk bought out ecotect). Archicad is losing it's market share - only a couple big firms use it still in melbourne - FK is the biggest, revit is definitely taking over.

        To be frank, from a business perspective the premium for a parametric modelling program over a 'dumb drawing' one is not much at all, when you factor in staff/labour costs which can be cut by massive amounts if parametric bim software is used properly.

        unfortunately I think for smaller one off jobs that are design/architectural oriented a basic drawing program is still better because you have to customise everything in revit, so it favours repeated elements etc. so for instance an architectural 'custom' (as in NOT a developer standard pitch roof brick veneer etc) house is arguably more efficient to do in autocad than revit.

        also to clarify if you buy revit you get autocad for free - which is kind of pointless because there is almost no point using autocad if you have revit - it is more for a transitional period or while staff come to grips with revit, falling back onto autocad if they need to pump something out quickly.

          I don't agree with your "no point using autocad" statement, because there will ALWAYS be a need for a "dumb" drawing. I've tried to draw details in Revit, but it just doesn't seem to have the flow and snappiness that AutoCAD has. I think it's the lack of a command based system. And I do want a to see a history of my commands damn it!
          But I do agree that overall Revit is the future. Maybe if there's an option to display your drawings and control panels in CAD classic it really would make AutoCAD obsolete.

    This has really made my day. Not only are ALL of Autodesks amazing software free for me and students to use, but they have added some excellent resources to their web site as well and downloadable curriculum content too!

    Unbelievable, and to think when I was learning this software it was hard to just get access to a computer that could run it..

    Now I can teach my students BOTH 3DS Max AND Maya. Brilliant.

    Just so people are aware this is a Single User, Single PC license. It requires internet activation to work and specifically prohibits network installation. Otherwise it functions like a 30 day trial.

    Have registered. But it says they have run out of serial numbers for AutoCAD. Bit strange
