Damn that is a decent deal for a very decent cpu.

  • How to calculate the required power supply for this cpu, motherboard and NVIDIA 1080 OR 1080Ti graphics?

  • +1

might be worth getting on amazon, its a bit cheaper, maybe more expensive with shipping. But you can then get a motherboard from amazon aswell, which is also cheaper, either the taichi x370 or crosshair x370 are recommended.

    • Worth the extra for the 1700X? I'm happy to overclock but have heard the 1700's are really the 1700X's which didn't handle sufficient overclocking.

Nup, from all accounts they all overclock the same. Save your money and just OC The 1700.

      • You are right, the X generally OC better. So if you are interested in 4Ghz, go the X. If you are happy with something mediocre like 3.8, go the 1700.

        • +1

that's not true, if you really wanted to OC you have to get them off silicone lottery or something. the 1700X's only got like 10% more to 4ghz than the 1700

        • +1

5% performance increase for 24% price increase plus the cost of a cooler seems like a poor decision to me. If you are happy overclocking, I'd suggest, never go for the 1700X why the price difference is so high.

      • nah, I'm running 3.9ghz stable on 1.35v and got there easy ~60C temps with a noctua nh-d14, I can push mine up to 4.0-4.1 but i have to push 1.4-1.45v so it's not really worth it.

The 1700x is just a higher stock clock and TDP, it also has an artifically raised tctl.

If 1700 can get 3.8Ghz and a 1700X can get 4.0Ghz, that would be a 5% difference in performance. The cost difference is 24% plus the cost of cooler, so probably close to 30% price difference. Is the 5% performance increase worth that?

I'd say no, if you are happy to OC, the 1700 is a great bang for buck workstation CPU and the 1600 is a great bang for buck gaming CPU.

        • Yes but as an enthusiast, the number does matter. The 200 MHz in performance doesn't mean much but 4GHz sounds wayyy better than 3.8 GHz lol.

Generally with non-X series, you'd hit caps around 3.8 and it won't budget any higher until 1.45V+.

Not justifying the cost factor, just saying you'd be hoping to win the silicon lottery if u wanted 4GHz with the 1700 (non-X).

        • @bao28: I'm more of a fan of getting more for your money, otherwise I'd have upgraded from my 8 year old i5-750 running at 4.2Ghz.

    • Any recommendations for a motherboard suitable for non-gaming - ie. no RGB, lots of USB ports etc?

      Virtualization (vmware) important.

      • How does RGB help with gaming?

      • +1

honestly atm I think i'd only go for the crosshair or the tiachi, both have tons, my taichi has I think 8 on the IO and 2 usb 3.1 headers and 2 usb 2.0 headers. Both run UEFI which has virtualisation support in bios.

The main reason is theres lots of support for any funny business with ram that might go on and regular updates.

Thanks - ordered the Crosshair but will just make it the gaming PC, leave the office PC as is despite being a 4670k.

Great first time deal op :)

Just be aware the FUTO are a disgraceful company to deal with. I had a DOA Dell LCD from them, they took weeks to respond for assistance, I sent them all the requested info, they never responded again. Ide personally pay more elsewhere.

    • They are ebay store for shoppingExpress and another store with the name: ShoppingExpressClearance.
Sad to see that they have poor after sales service. Bought lot of stuff from them in the past. I have heard other stories where they asked customers to deal directly with manufacturer which they legally cannot do during warranty periods.

Will tend to skip in future unless price is too good to pass and I am happy to take warranty claims with manufacturer…. Though DOA should be handled in better way.

  • How does this compare to 7700K in terms of gaming performance (especially VR gaming)

    • i believe the 7700k is a little better but you pay a good deal for it.
