  • May I please ask if the edge 5w30 meets VW standards?
    I have a 2016 polo Gti unsure if I could use this.
    Thanks

    • This oil is VW 502 00/505 00 standards approved. Recommendation is to use the newer VW 504 00/507 00 standards.

      Having said that I have this and use it on my VW Golf GTI. I've found that it does burn off pretty fast though, and I use it for frequent top ups. Have since swapped to Nulon to see if it makes any difference.

        I've switched to 5W40 VW 502 00/505 00 for my MkV GTI for oil consumption issues.

        It seems to help somewhat.

        VW 504 00/507 00 is mandatory for VW Diesels, or 25k intervals for Petrol, however VW 502 00/505 00 is still perfectly fine for our MkV GTI and standard 15k service intervals.

        VW 504 00/507 00 wasn't released until after our MkV GTI were manufactured.

        • I too am suffering high oil consumption in my Tiguan using Castrol Edge 5W-30. What type of 5W-40 are you trying JB1?

        • +1

          @petersx:

          Valvoline 5W-40 (VW 502 00/505 00). The brand isn't as important as the viscosity of the oil.

        • +1

          @JB1:

          That particular oil burns the quickest in my Skoda and my Jetta. I've found that Liquimoly 5w30 burns the least.
          Also need to remember that 1L every 5000km's is deemed normal by VW LOL (what a joke)

        • +1

          @migoreng: It is rediculous that these engines (albeit great engines) require 2 or 3 top-ups between services and it only gets worse with age. My Tiguan has done over 250k Kim's but now requires a Litre of oil every 2000 Kim's.

        • +2

          @migoreng:

          Actually 1L per 2,000km is deemed normal by VW!!!

          I've got about 40L left of the Valvoline. I'm not too fussed about oil consumption these days.

          I top it up every 3,000km, no need to check the dipstick to see if I need oil, it WILL need oil lol. Just a question of how much.

        • +1

          @petersx:

          Yeh agreed, its shit. It's a common trait with most VAG cars, you get great fuel economy and performance at the cost of oil.

          Wow that's a fair bit ! I'd consider changing the viscosity, ask your mechanic for a recommendation for high mileage cars.

        • @JB1:

          lolol its every 2000 now? haha Last I asked when they did a consumption test on mine it was 1L per 5000 haha. This is for a 1.8 TSI motor, my 2L TFSI ate much less!

        • @migoreng:

          Unless it uses more than 1L per 2000km, VW won't even consider repairing/rebuilding the engine. Which Liquimoly 5w30 do you use?

          High oil consumption is now normal with high tolerance/low fuel consumption engines.

          In the manual, Porsche states their engines can use up to 1.5L per 1000km.

          I've done 148k on my GTI. Did an oil change last week. Drained 4L of oil, filled up with 4.8L.

          I've learned to deal with it every 2 months, rather than stress about it. An extra $30 every 15,000km doesn't hurt. I've got 8 x 5L bottles of Valvoline 5W40 in the garage. Should last me 60,000km, including oil changes.

        • @JB1:

          Am I just lucky that my little polo gti did not burn any oil between services? Or It would just happen eventually?

        • @danielY:

          I'm not sure, but count yourself lucky. However the Polo GTI and the 2.0T have completely different engines.

          What year/engine Polo GTI you have? As cars get older, over 100k, most engines start to use a little oil if not from new.

          Interestingly enough, engines that run in hard, i.e. revved high and no constant engine speed seem to have less oil consumption issues.

        • @JB1:
          My little polo gti is 2016 year model with 1.8L engine
          Maybe I pushed the accelerator too hard to have oil burn out issue:)

        • @danielY:

          Perfect example of a win/win situation.

  • Great prices, shame about the stupid dates.

    • +1

      Could always order online for local pickup on a date that does suit you.

      • Can you do C&C for this?

      • +2

        Or buy it whenever and get the difference as store credit if you're a club member.

        • can you explain this one please?

        • @ily:

          If a product you’ve purchased goes on special within two weeks, we’ll credit the difference direct to your Club Account.
          Make sure we have your email address so we can email you when you receive credit and when your credit is about to expire.

          How does it work?

          On Monday, you head in to your nearest Supercheap Auto store and buy a set of car seat covers for the full price of $50. On Wednesday, the same car seat covers are in the Supercheap Auto catalogue for $35.
          A credit for $15 is automatically put on your club account.

          On Saturday, you visit your nearest store and put your $15 credit towards some new floor mats to match your new seat covers!

    Have done so in the past. Even did a couple of orders to collect at different stores to bypass the limit of 2 Just checked now and it allows me to select a store so hoping it will stay the same Wednesday

    • Thanks, C&C would be great, really only want the coolant.

      Have set a reminder for Sunday.

    Good price but not the lowest in OZB history when I stocked up mine

  • 5W-30 is suitable for Corolla 2008,any website to check the fuel suitability for the car.

    • https://goo.gl/LCPr6h

      Although I really only trust what the manufacturer recommends, you should have a sticker in the fuel lid.

    • Using Edge 5W-30 for my Corolla 2011 ever since the capped price servicing ran out… runs for 15K and isn't black when I change. People above seem to have had different experiences I'll attribute that to their driving habits and past service history of the car. My 6 yo Corolla (sitting at 120k) still sounds like a brand new car upon starting every time.

  • Wonder can we mix 5W-30 with 10W30 ?

    • You probably could, but why not just use the proper oil in the first place?

  • Because I had some left from each other.

  • Is the Nulon coolant suitable for 2000 Lancer GLXi?

  • +1

    Cheers OP, I picked up two castrol edge and brother picked up another two..

    Bought a couple of bottles of Edge 5W30 for the LV focus as I was down to my last bottle from a previous sale. Lots of stock at Gardeners Road, Alexandria.
