Found this bargain at my Local Woolies today. kerrigold imported Irish Butter that ticks all the Paleo and Keto boxes as it is made from milk from grass fed cows. The taste is awesome. Any butter in the grass fed organic category is usually over $5 for 250g. Long expiry date: 10/10/18.

Not sure what Paleo and Keto boxes are … but for me it doesn't tick the "environmental friendly" box due to long transport. And I don't want to know what they mix in there to achieve the long expiry date.

International trade is happening all the time, get used to it. Whether you consider it environmentally friendly or not, products can only be as cheap as this because a worldwide supply chain exists. It doesn't make any difference to the environment whether you buy this or it's thrown out. The fact that it comes from a long way away doesn't make that much impact either - the ships are already travelling with affordable goods for people on the other side of the world to improve their quality of life.

They haven't couriered this pat of butter directly to you.

I know that it happens all the time. And in a lot of cases it makes sense. But it doesn't mean that is right all the time. This is butter! No need it to ship it from around the world … not even interstate. I personally believe it makes a difference when there would be less ships on our oceans and we would buy things a little bit more conscious. You can't say the boats are already there so there is no difference. You will make a difference by not buying.

So you think we should be producing butter locally all the time? Meaning providing pasture (cleared productive land) for cattle in a climate where they can produce milk? It's much more efficient for the places with the natural comparative advantage to produce butter for places where they can't produce butter of the same quality. You may say "this is butter!" but not everywhere would people be buying local butter when Kerrygold or other quality butters cost the same or less.

Other ingredients come from other parts of the world. It's very hard to buy any food product these days while avoiding anything imported from any distance away.

@Meconium: I guess we do not import milk … so we should be able to make butter :-). Maybe not in Alice Springs or Darwin.
I agree … a lot of food is imported (I still don't understand why you can't get German "Paprika Chips" here in Australia). But that does not make it right in a lot of cases.

In the end it's up to the consumer to decide.

@mini_wombat: My girlfriend said she found German paprika chips at Aldi when they had the "German Fair" on at the beginning of the year

        • Hehe … I would prefer some Paprika Chips over some butter :-). Will have a look at Aldi when they have their "German Fair" … thanks.

        • @mini_wombat: But they won't tick the "environmental friendly" box due to long transport…

          @Meconium: Okok … I go and get the butter now … :-)

I believe it's nationawide. Saw it in catalogue.

I thought most dairy cows in Australia were 'grass fed' anyway. When I drive throughout country Victoria that's what I see with my own eyes.

I can't believe when beef is sold as "grain fed". So you're telling me the cow i'm going to eat had a shitty life in a feedlot. No thanks

  • Grass fed cows ?
I thought all cows ate grass.
what is the alternative for them ?

    • +2

There were the geniuses in the UK that thought an alternative to grass was to feed cows other cows……the result Mad Cow Disease.

You can just imagine the Ireland’s lush green pastures when you taste this flavoursome butter. With 17,000 family-owned farms and an average of two cows per hectare, Ireland boasts some of the world’s happiest cows. The biggest downside to this butter is the carbon miles to get it here.
“It must be the luck of the Irish, because this butter is perfection. Creamy, salty but not at all overpowering. Jacket potatoes never tasted so good.”

    Thanks OP.
Got a few instant $10 off $30 Woolies offers starting tomorrow. So this butter is now on the list.

Worth trying at half price & only 45c more than homebrand. Butters vary between countries - have enjoyed the taste of Irish butter on my travels.

    • Local W had run out, so got raincheck for 6. Next W reported had plenty - but only had plenty of unsalted so another raincheck for 6. So won't run out of Irish butter for a while.
