Never heard of them. And I thought I knew something about audio.

    • +3

      But it's

      Flagship Audiophile-Grade

      • +9

All I know is that their delivery vans are white.

        • They must be legit then! I've sampled some at an Officeworks carpark. Great speakers bro.

  • Thanks for the post, man. Don't know about the brand either, but it's still tempting even if I don't need it.

Edit: Lack of Bluetooth is a big downside.

  • +3

Definitive Audio is a very reputable company and produce some very good speakers. I personally own mythos one for my front end.
    Sound Quality Would Not dissapoint.

  • +7

Very tempting. Could use as dummy speakers with Chromecast audios for a decent home setup. But my wife would kill me if I buy anymore speakers.

  • +1

Though I'm wondering if a speaker needs to include Audiophile-Grade in the product name, it's probably not…

Can't say myself, but looking at Amazon description it's clearly a big part of their marketing strategy..

    • +2

Genuine Audiophiles wouldn't use wireless protocols prone to errors to transmit the signal to the speaker, so it's immediately a misnomer.

      • I think you're confusing audiophiles with snobs - the two are not always one and the same and some audiophiles are actually pragmatic.

  • How do you hook this up to your tv?

    • Via an optical/toslink cable.

  • +9

Looks like something you'd buy from 2 blokes in a white van.

    • +2

Sadly my father fell for that about 10 years ago. For $400 for some over size speakers with some dummy weights inside. God bless him.

      • Bargain! Heavy speakers for cheap!

        • I got done too… 20 years old and stupid.

DefTech have been around for a long time and have created some incredible stuff… especially super compact Subwoofers (12" cubes!) that performed like much larger units but usually at a high cost. Not sure what they've been up to recently and I have no idea what these things are like but there's a chance they've sold out to a Chinese company who may be trying to flog OK-ish products under the high quality badge. Not sure and haven't even Googled that but something to keep in mind.

    • I haven't heard about them being sold to a Chinese company and they don't normally pop up at these prices (just check Amazon).

  • +1

    Interesting indeed

Not being sarcastic here, I would love to know what justifies the 1299 RRP

    • -1

      It is $799 RRP

  • +3

This deal reminds me of the time I bought a set of over stocked audiophile hifi speakers from out the back of a white van.

  • +4

DefTech is good gear. However "RRP $1,299" is (choose your favourite unprintable).

I have a Peachtree Deepblue 2, which is a valid competitor - and probably its superior IMHO. Its Australian RRP is $799, however you can buy cheaper by shopping around. It runs a single 6.5" woofer (the W9 is 2 x 5.25"), with 3" mids and 1" tweeters. And at 440WRMS it really does the biz.

The W9 at $299? Probably a steal. I'll upvote even though I've never heard it.

  • I bought the pro cinema 600 as a 5.1 setup from JB Hifi back in 2008 based on Amazon reviews. They are still running my home Theater setup. Def tech definitely good and I'd be surprised if they disappoint. Pro cinema is definitely not audiophile grade, and I haven't heard of these W9s but I'd be surprised if they turn out to be shite.
Tempted to try em at this price. Current wireless music solution is Sonos. This might just be better sound.

    • Pro cinema is definitely not audiophile grade

So the W9 would be better than the Pro 600?

      • Based on price, I'd say that's what the manufacturer wants us to think! Let's hope some of the folks who bought it will tell us! I have no personal experience with these, so can't comment myself.

Took a punt on the W7. Had my $20 Grays eBay voucher still burning a hole in my account.

    • Lol I wasted my voucher on an iphone cable last month. $23 was a ripoff to be sure, but at $3 including postage, I threw caution to the wind.

  • I can't believe they literally named the speaker description as "Audiophile-Grade" which literally means nothing other than "It sounds good, proclaimed by ME!" A skip for me personally.

      • +4

It's a marketing ploy and nothing else in my opinion. There is no such thing as "audiophile grade". Who validates this? A musician? How is this a certification and/or any sort of "classification"? Just my personal opinion on the product / company, not your post OP or yourself. The deal is a great bargain, keep up the good work!

        • All good fair point

        • Although you could argue the same for the definition of "fine wine"

  • Can't find the listing anymore on ebay

    • sold out, W7 still available

Specs wise, W9 looks great. But I have heard Sonos and Bose wireless speakers and wont rate these compared to them as said in few Amazon reviews at retail of $1299.
For $299, someone might try them. I dont like their looks though.
I will still buy Sonos Play 5 or similar Bose (taken you want bluetooth), if you are looking decent wireless speakers for your kitchen and bedroom.

    • Are you saying they (W9) don't compare to sonos 5? I was reading some UK reviews saying these are better than sonos.

      • -5

Spec wise, it looks good, I am saying I dont believe people in Amazon saying these are better than Sonos. I am quite positive that these users never had Sonos to hear for long time.

  • Are these including GST? I'd like to claim TRS…

  • +1

    OP the W7's are now $160 each . .

    • yeah thanks for reminding me, will update it now

      • +2

Also the W9 is back in stock! Just ordered one for $240 with the 20% off code.

        • +1

          thanks updated

        • Couldn't help myself - bought one too!

        • @atlas: ah, the joy of ozbargain!
edit - just had a look and figured you're not the only one. I was order no.51. It's up to 58 now!

  • I've received my w7 and after a bit of pain and cursing I successfully setup and updated the box. However I've noticed a constant high pitch squeal, not loud but quite noticeable both with and without music playing. Has anyone else got this issue so far?

    • +1

Got the W9 and set it up. No such issues. My only gripe is the somewhat limited music source selection.
Been very impressed with the sound. It is quite on the bright side, but definitely a full sound covering the mids and lows as well. Audiophile? Maybe not, but great sound? For sure. Thanks OP!

  • Anyone can comment on how the W9 compares with the Klipsch KMC 3?

  • I'm loving both the W9 and W7. Set them up with Chromecast audios and they work a charm.
