3pc Stainless Steel Cookware Set $49.99 @ ALDI

30

Been on the lookout for cookware. I thought this was a decent deal because this cookware set is 18/10 stainless steel and has an encapsulated base (tri-ply, I expect). Includes 16cm, 18cm and 20cm saucepans all with glass lids.

Some other name brands don't necessarily have these features especially in their lower ranges.

Otherwise comparable to this might be IKEA 365+ which is also tri-ply but IKEA don't say what kind of stainless steel it is and their handles are flat and uncomfortable, while being more expensive.

  • Stainless steel is Hardy but is a really bad just conductor. Best go for copper, iron, or aluminium layered like the all cast stuff

    • The encapsulated base if I'm not mistaken, is typically aluminium sandwiched in between the layers of stainless steel, for better heat distribution.

      • Not good for induction cooking though.

        • Aldi says is induction compatible - so it will likely have fast and even heat on an induction stove.

        • @thomasfolks: oh ok, usually those sorts arnt. Good show Aldi.

  • Good price on the three. If it's the same brand "Crompton" I think? Handles get hot in a commercial kitchen environment. I still use them but only for certain tasks.

    • Crofton = aldi brand
So yep it will be the same :)

    • Straight outta crompton!

  • Yup grabbed them today and look pretty decent for the price. Don't think copper aluminium sandwiched is really necessary for the pots. Wouldn't buy the frypan version though, I'll stick with my well seasoned black steel for frying duties. The handle gets hot cos they're metal, but that's what I'm after so I can chuck en in the oven if need be.
I also grabbed a set of the glass roasting dishes, I like them cause they got plastic lids which will be handy when storing them on top of each other and also no more failed attempts to try and get Glad Wrap to actually stick to the sides of the tray with my leftovers

  • I looked at the fry pans.

They are incredibly heavy, probably past the point of nice solid quality and into the realm of being too cumbersome.

The sizes were kind of weird for a set of two, one is too small and wouldn't be used often, so the economics die quickly, $50 for one pan that is still not big enough for many jobs. The sides are really high, would be hard to flip eggs etc -they are more like sauté/saucepans than actual frypan/skillets, though I have noticed this becoming a common trend.

Teflon surface seemed okay, hard to tell.

    Did not buy.

  • +1

If these are the ones with hollow handles then gunk will get inside and be difficult to clean.

    Also glass lids suck.
