    Just for the record; I did some testing between the kit (Sony 16-50mm) lens at 19mm vs the Simga 19mm f2.8 on my Sony a6300 and the Sony kit lens was sharper. The Sigma was very soft on the edges. All photos were taken in RAW format.

      From the various reading I did before buying, it seems the 60mm is the sharpest all around, followed by the 30mm, then the 19mm.

      They clearly are not a Zeiss, but considering how inexpensive they are, they are very good value.

      Personally I have the 60mm coming (waiting for deliveries is the worst part of ozbargain hehe). I don't even think I will use it much, but at the price it seemed like a good purchase to expand my range.

      Yeah, Zeiss lenses all day err day. You just can't go wrong with them. I am however interested in the Sony 85mm f1.8 for my a7ii.

      Zeiss are expensive af, but the image/video are second to none.

        The Sony kit lenses are anything but Zeiss..

        the Sony 16-50mm lenses I own are quite soft.. especially at the 16mm wide end. The Sigmas are far better and is comparable in performance to the basic primes that you get from Nikon, Canon, etc.

        If you stop down the kit lenses to f/8 or higher it becomes more usable

      I tried the 19mm on my A6000 and found the sigma a little sharper but it was very marginal and not worth the outlay and then hassle of fixed length.

      I paid 170 for the 50mm 1.8 and it is sharper than the 60mm as well.

      Sigma lenses are known for being furry round the edges. It is because/why they are the cheapest available (usually), depending on whether the chicken preceded the egg, or the other way round.

      The wider they are, the more the glass counts, and worse the Sigma effect will be ;-)

          Fair call; my comment is based on my exp with their gear in older Nikon and Canon DSLRs, not specific to MFT/Sony FE. It might have no relevance if Sigma lenses for these are much better than the fare they used to make for those. They may be making better glass nowadays, or simply be nearer in quality to what is available for those mounts.

          That said, they had teh occasional reasonable lens. But I've always found their gear lacks in more than glass, build quality and so on seldom matched Tamron, let alone any of the nice lenses. Again, nowadays they might be (and indeed I'd hope they are) making better product whether it be at the cheaper end of the market where they've traditionally had some success, or further up.

          @zerovelocity: I'm not sure when you last used Sigma glass but since introducing their Art line, they have really stepped up their game. They now deliver lenses that match and sometimes outperform the equivalent Canon/Nikon glass, at lower price points.

          Worth reading some reviews of their 35, 50, 85 and 135 Art primes.

          @atlas: Sure, but it's only 22 models out of their range. Good to see they are changing.

          It's bad being old; your perspective gets tainted by poor experiences- typically when someone told you 'but this is new and improved', yet u find it won't preform as it should, or otherwise could. I didn't mean to sledge Sigma as much as I may have sounded, one always looks for a lens of the right speed and mount and compare it to ALL the others at that price. The trouble is glass takes some time to assess, let alone get the best out of.

        The Sigma Art series lenses are outstanding and extremely sharp across the whole image. Any review searches of these lenses will show they compare with the highest quality professional lenses. I use them on a daily basis for 4K television production.

      Coming back to review.Are you making videos? as the Sigma ones might not have Stabilisation inbuilt.
      Tbh, 16-50mm kit lens is a very basic one and very soft. Sigma ones will be sharper unless you are using some weird settings.
      Having said that, I have used both on A6000.

        When I compared the lens, I used a tripod, indoors, same settings, same custom WB, etc. Tried to minimise the variables. I did however use autofocus for both lenses, but it was single point focus, not multi-point (which I find unreliable). I also took multiple shots.

        I've come from a Canon 5d mark ii with L series lenses, so my expectations are high and I was pixel peeping every image to compare. My copy of the Sigma 19mm was softer than the kit lens. The kit lens is surprisingly good.

          You would definitely love the Sony primes : 35 mm and 50 mm as they would make pics so crisp with focal 1.8.

          I use 18-200 mm lens which is definitely more crisper than the kit 16-50 mm lens. Again, that one is not as crisp as the 50 mm one….

          I have used Sigma 19 mm as well and sold it as I could not see much difference compared to kit l6 mm. Though it was crisp over Sony.

          I actually found the opposite, the 35 and 50mm f/1.8 sony apsc lenses that I had were fairly soft at f/1.8, but things improved from f/2.2 and it was quite good at f/2.8.

          @ankor: Their focal starts at 1.8, but sweet spot is at 2.2-2.4. Most of the lenses work that way.
          That does not mean any lens ( like 30 mm f2.8) with focal starting from 2.4 or 2.8 will be equally good. Their sweet spot might be at some other stop.

      Want a 30 or 35mm as well.
      Sony one comes with 1.8 focal. Sigma one is 2.8, which will make it a bit softer compared to sony prime.

        To confuse you more, there is a Sigma 30mm F/1.4 which is also highly, highly reviewed.

        My next choice is likely between the Sony SEL35F18 and the Sigma. That is going to be really difficult. I might even just buy it from an actual shop so I can test each out beforehand.

          Good luck finding the SEL35F18 in stock though. I tried to get one ordered through Teds in May and Sony told them 'late July'. Many sites still showing it on 'back-order'

          True. That looks great with wider view and can do portraits as well. Though for closeup portraits, 50mm (75mm actual) is great at 1.8f as well.

          I would have jumped for Sigma 30 mm if it was 1.8F and little expensive. Dont want to pay for Sony 35mm for over $400 and difficult to find.

    I have the Sony 50mm F1.8 Lens and while it's fantastic it's not wide enough for indoor kids shots.

    Should I be looking at the Sigma 30mm? The DP review mentions "(45mm on Sony E)" which seems to indicate the field would actually be similar to the 50mm. Am I reading that correctly?

    Also should I be concerned about the lack of OSS? Seems to help a great deal on indoor shots.

      The lack of OSS is up to you and what you are shooting.

      As for the focal length, the Sony (assuming you have the A6000/6300/6500) is a cropped APS-C, so the 30mm will be equivalent to a 45mm full-frame. Likewise though, the 50mm will be a 75mm equivalent. So it will give you a wider field of view.

      I have sony 50mm as well and I love it. Only issue sometime is when you need little bit of side scenery or wider look as well. 35 mm 1.8 focal is great, but expensive.
      Sigma 30mm one is good, but 2.8 focal :(

      These are designed to cover the APS-C sensor area, so they are more like 1.5x 19/30/60mm if you are using the on a Sony mirrorless (except A7/A9 which will show black edges/corners) and 2x 19/30/60mm if you are using them on the Olympus/Panasonic M43 cameras.

      The 19mm is not full frame.. you'll get serious black borders

      The 30mm is not full frame either.. but I've tested removing the baffles at the back and you pretty much get full frame a lot of the time

        Yes I have read this too….I dont recall anything about the 60mm sans baffle though. I am tempted to get one of these for my A6000, but I really would prefer a lens that I can use on my A7 properly.

          Auto lens for work is essential to me. If you don't need the auto-focus feature or not that much, Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art with MC-11 adapter is the way to go, the bokeh and the sharpness are SPLENDID. But the auto-focus is bad during low light condition, even with my A7Rii. I sold my Sigma 35mm f1.4 a few month ago because of that, also it is a heavy lens.

      After removing the baffles on the 19mm, you still get a fair bit of vignetting. If you crop to get rid of the vignetting, you lose about 20% so you get the equivalent of around 23mm. And that is at f/2.8. Vignetting gets much worse past f/3.5

      Having said that, it is one of the lenses I use the most on my A7ii

        Stopped down is the vignetting on the 19mmm with baffles removed to the point where it's solid black in the corners or just dim? I don't mind vignetting, helps to centre focus and also add some artistic flair to photos.
        To me I don't see a point in the 30mm and 60mmm as I already have lenses with similar aperture that cover those focal lengths.

          Solid black in the corners. The edge of the vignetting is much sharper when stopped down, where wide open, it helps to soften it up. Not too hard to work around, but you do end up spending a lot of time cropping. Easiest workaround is to enable digital zoom (or APS-C mode, but that defeats the whole purpose).

          Also, 19mm is wide enough that the included lens hood is in frame, so is unusable on the A7.
          But for a cheap wide angle with AF, its pretty good.

      Just get the Samyang/Rokinon 35mm f/2.8 Sony FE lens. Can be had for around $400.

      Don't bother getting these crop lenses and trying to remove the baffle. Edges will always vignette and be blurry as they were never designed for the larger sensor.

        Beware that samyang lens have quality controll issues. Hard to find a lens that is well centred. If you buy it, buy it from a place you can easily return it if your lens is a bit off.

    I've owned two of these little lenses (19mm and 30mm) for commercial photo and video, really amazing lenses, sharp and colour is great. The little downside is the F2.8 aperture and lack of IS, but for that price, it's a no-brainer deal, just buy them.

    ps. Get the BLACK colour, the silver ones will be scratched easily on the lens body.

      It really depends on what you shoot.

      If you sometimes wish you could have a larger field of view, perhaps consider the 19mm - although if it's a really big difference maybe a 12mm would be a good choice (more expensive though)

      If you wish you had more reach, consider the 60mm.

      I'd say you don't need these 3 Sigma lenses. Sigma 19mm is a bit wide (28.5mm Full-Frame view, good for landscape or cityscape), 30mm is similar to your 35 f1.8 with smaller aperture (45mm FF view), 60mm is short telephoto (90mm FF view).

      If you shoot more close-up portraits, you can get the Sigma 60mm f2.8 OR the Sony 50mm F1.8 (APSC version).

      If you shoot wider view, get the Sigma 19mm f2.8.

      The Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8 is expensive but worth the money. Really sharp images, fantastic at night despite f2.8, and focal length is great as a walkabout lens. The IQ is noticably better than the kit lens. Plus its really small.

      The other option is the sony fe 28mm f2. Also a really sharp lens despit not having the zeiss badge. Little bit cheaper and bigger than the 35mm though

      I have both and i would pay extra for the 35mm f2.8. Its a gem of a lens!

      Obviosly, there are many more options if you prefer legacy manual lenses.

        I'm not too sure about legacy ones, I don't really know enough about photography to be able to get out there and buy something that isn't a 100% natural fit with my camera. I was hoping to get an 'off brand' like Sigma, FF lens for the Sony - assuming you don't know any like that? Because the Sony (esp. the Zeiss) are way to expensive for me. $600 is not money a uni student can spend on camera lenses haha.

        Any help appreciated :)

          @Orpheus: Good suggestion. These must be new as i havent seen many people use it although the few reviews available suggest good IQ. Have you used it? If so what is it like?

          If you are patient then note that you can pick up a 35mm zeiss f2.8 for a good price. I got mine new for $512 from digidirect during a 20% off ebay sale. The advantage is that i can probably sell it for the same price used later on as it doesnt depreciate much. Samyang depteciates much more.

          Manual lenses are fine with a simple ($10) adaptor. You loose autofocus which is not great for action stuf but otherwise its fine.

          I actually really enjoy shooting with legacy lenses and it makes me think about exposure and how to best compose the image. The image quality of some of these lenses are superb. If you are on a budget, this is the way to go.

          As for lenses, the cannon fd range or the minolta md rokkors are the best. Pm me if you want info on any individual lenses - i have many and happy to help.

          @Hoobi: Legend! I will have a look at that, and when I get out my analogue gear (stole my mum's old Canon setup) I will message PM you with some details if you're happy to give me a hand?

          It's super hard starting out photography - I'm a bit of a natural with the composition and stuff, so my good shots look good, but all the manual details etc make my head go a bit fuzzy. So once I have too much light, not enough light, bump a button on the camera, put it in the wrong mode, whatever it is - I just have no idea what to do! Haha. I know there's all sorts of guides out there but I'm sort of not the target audience for most of them. Anyway, any help you can give would be very much appreciated!

          @jrowls:Sure happy to help.

          Note you do not need to go full manual mode. You can shoot in apature priority mode. In this mode the only thing you will need to do is manual focus. The a7 will do the rest.The A7 has a few focus assist options as well so manual focus is not that hard.

          It is even simpler for landscapes. You just change the apature to f8+ at which point the camera is focused to infinity (ie everything beyond a meter or so from your camera is in focus). So you can just point and shoot all you want without having to refocus.

    I had a 30mm 1.4 for Nikon long way back. Wasn't satisfied with the sharpness TBH. Soft all the way to 2.8. Even in center. And the focusing was a bit hit or miss unless I was careful. Not sure how they have improved now a days, but I sold it and opted for a 85mm/1.8 which was way better in sharpness, bokeh quality and ofcourse picture quality.
