  • Do these wifi extenders really work?

    • +3

Yes extender does work but makes bandwidth half & sometimes transition from AP to extender is not smooth.

I don't know about this one though.

      • +1

Double the length, half the strength

      • +3

if they operate on only 2.4ghz, then yes …. all will reduce your bandwidth, if you get ones that use 5ghz, you can bridge via the 5 ghz and no impact on the 2.4ghz users.

you only get 3 non-overlapping channels on 2.4ghz.

  • Will help me with wireless access I don't have in the garage
I just got it, it comes to $9.35 AUD + some cents from Cashrewards

  • I bought one on the last deal, arrived yesterday and set up tonight. I definitely have got a better signal in the back room, but haven't done any tests as compared to being direct on my network - but any speed is better than zero.

  • I don't know a lot about these Wifi extenders, could someone explain how this Xiaomi compares to my Netgear EX3700 AC750 Dual Band Universal WiFi Range Extender I purchased for $75 the other week?

Set it up last week to extend the range of my Arlo Pros and have found speed appears more consistent and stable with the Extender than the actual crappy Modem/ Router Optus supplied to me about 4 years ago!

      $75 item vs $9 item. I think you're good.

      • haha, good enough for me!

    • Optus makes more money if they supply you cheap junk (lower equipment cost) with low performance (lower network costs).

I have two of these, one is in my laundry about 20m from my modem and extends the wifi signal out the back yard and beyond, the other I set up for my neighbor to access my internet service {during off peak times with time rules on my modem). Its about as far from my modem, goes through a colorbond fence, brick wall and a couple of internal walls and has a full signal.

They take about a minute to setup via the Mi-Home app and can either replicate the original wifi signal so your existing devices connect as normal or be set up as a different wifi hotspot name and password as I did with next door so they log in to their own details.

They plug into a standard USB power supply, the Mi-Home app lets you check the strength and turn them on and off as you need, for $9.xx you can't go wrong.

    • Thanks for the detailed post. Can you set up the device without plugging in to a router? The router i want to extend doesn't have a usb port. Thanks in advance.

      • Standard USB power supply means your USB phone charger will power this thing.

        • I understand that part. However I read on the sale page it pairs by plugging in to the router.

"Plug and Play, Very Easy to Install

Just insert the Xiaomi Wi-Fi amplifier into the router, it will automatically pair when the yellow indicator turns into blue; then plug the Amplifier into other USB port."

        • @Spellbound: If you have the Xiaomi router you can do that, otherwise you log in to it from what i understand.

          @Yakuza85:

Thanks so much. Pulled trigger on it!

        • @Spellbound:

It doesn't physically plug in, it pairs.

  • You reckon these things work? Have a large house and at the front signal is weak as piss, was gonna buy another modem to bridge the signal or should I try one of these things out?

    • Buy two of this..

    • I got one (different brand) for $40 from Auspost last year, works a treat. I can still get my 25MBPS on the extender, plenty for anything.

    Thanks upside down Scotty.

  • I've finding this a true nightmare to set up..followed instructions to the letter but hit a non-negotiable snag when they suggest the"select mainland china"before logging on.Help!

    • In the Xiaomi app have you set your region to Mainland China?

      • correct, you need to doe this in the App to set it up apparently.

  • Looks like coupon expired now.

just bought one 1 min ago, worked fine. were you logged in before applying the coupon?

      • Ahhh…. Thanks for that. I was trying to apply it on the signup-checkout combined page. Worked a treat if I created the account and logged in first.

  • So noob question here - any issues with plugging this into a USB port on a PS4?

    • +1

Wouldn't have thought so, the USB is just to power the device AFAIK. Got one in the last sale and seems to work fine. I just plug into a powerbank and take it downstairs.

    band 28?

  • I wish I was clever enough to port openwrt on these.

  • My current Modem has maximum connections of 20, which has been a problem as I have several Lifx lights (thanks OB). Will I be able to connect more devices if i get one of these?

  • I am getting code not valid

    • +2

      Need to be logged in.

      • Thanks Mate. Just put an order through

  • Paid $8.88 AUD, code still working. Thanks OP!

  • Deleted the App & reinstalled selecting "Mainland China" etc.Appears to be working as we speak.Do most just plug the Repeater into the USB port of their (laptop) computer?
    Thanks all and Cheers

Coupon expired now? Logged in and says "Coupon code "xmwr081104" is not valid.". Anyone can confirm?

    • +1

mine says the same but still end up getting it. only about $2 more

  • no longer works

  • Coupon expired.

Just be warned that it extends your Wifi all the way to Peoples Republic of China trying to contact some IP address in China every 10 seconds. Firmware also has some service listening at telnet tcp/23 port which is 100% a backdoor.

And it has single 1T1R antenna, so your extended wifi will be limited to 72 Mbit/sec.

    • that is worrying!

    • Got some linkys for that , bit if a worry if it's true. Though I guess all the other extenders are wired up to the NSA instead?

(or a link on how to fix it.)

    • Do you have any more information to share? I did a search on Google and couldn't find anything.

    • Have heard this about their WiFi cameras.
