ALDImobile Data Pack Update - 2GB/30 Days $15, 5GB/30 Days $30 & 20GB/365 Days $95

790

Just received an email from ALDImobile about their data pack update. Previously for $15 recharge you get 1.5GB extra data for 30 days, and now you get 2GB. $30 recharge gets you 5GB/30 days. Moreover there's now an option for 20GB/365 days for $95, which you can use with their PAYG plan which also lasts 365 days.

Good replacement for those old amaysim users on PAYG+one year data plan, who rarely calls/sends text.

  • Nice, 20GB for 365 day will be good for tethering whilst on holidays

I don't think it's an add on data pack. The Aldi website title says - Data Only Packs

So you just need a usb modem.

    • Arguably, it is not that much better than Vodafone's $50/10GB for six months x 2. Bearing in mind that they have been doing 1/2 price every quarter and extra data to go with that. Basically 20GB+ over 2 x 6 months for $50 when that happens. Obviously ALDImobile is better with Telstra though, but still Vodafone for half the price is better.

Vodafone $50 180 data sim is discounted to $25 at Woolies.

Thanks. I might stock up for next six months.

I've been using that too, but you need a dual SIM phone to take advantage of that as VF's data SIM doesn't have any call facility whereas Aldimobile's data packs are on top of a PAYG plan.

        • I too have been doing that with a dual SIM phone, however, this setup no longer works when VF switch off their 2G network on 30/07/17 as my dual sim phone doesn't support 4G/3G.

So this aldi data pack is perfect for user who rarely call/sms but needed data.

  • Do they still use the Telstra network?

    • +3

      Yes

MEDION Australia Pty Ltd. (ABN 58 106 611 330) under the brand name ALDImobile uses part of Telstra’s 4G and 3G mobile network. The mobile product of ALDImobile provides a 4G coverage footprint of 95% and a combined 4G and 3G coverage footprint of 98.8% of the Australian population covering 1.59 million square kilometers. 3G handsets will only receive 3G coverage.

      • Thanks for that.

        What do they mean by:

ALDImobile uses PART of Telstra’s 4G and 3G mobile network.

        • Think it means they don't provide the full Next G coverage. They also cap the 4G at 100Mbps from memory.

        • +2

I believe the coverage is slightly limited vs Boost or Telstra which have full access to the network. Don't have any exact details on Boost's coverage % though to give an exact comparison. The best thing to do is check the coverage map on ALDImobile, vs Boost or Telstra to see if there is any differences. You may find ALDImobile coverage isn't as good as Telstra or Boost.

In terms of speed, ALDImobile is limited to 100mbps and you don't get access to Telstra 4GX (that is also the case with Boost). That is documented.

        • Means they dont use all of the network, the "extra" is reserved for full paying customers , not discount users like Aldi, that gives them the Reason for charging more

        • @RockyRaccoon:

Means they dont use all of the network

          bandwidth or coverage though?

        • @hamza23:

In my home town in regional NSW, I only get 3G. If I was with Telstra I would get 4G. I get 4G in plenty of other towns and cities.

        • @jv: I think "heal" answers this above

        • Legal grammar not marketing grammar .

        • The extra charges aren't for coverage its service ……walk into telstra they help you …….walk into aldi and ask for help with mobile ……same with boost ……less helpful but cheaper ……

        • +1

          @jv:

          Both.

          Telstra's full network

Boost network(according to their site but does not seem to be up to date as it uses speed limited 4GX(700mhz) now).

I'm so dumping Optus when my contract is up, and going back to good ole Aldi. :)

    • I did already, ditched iinet@Aldi, below avg service and was 3G
moved to Aldi 365 days deal, happy so far…

    • +2

I basically converted 6 of my friends in a month … non of them travel to WA, so the supposedly limited Aldi coverage on telstra doesn't affect anyone in Newcastle or Port mac or Tamworth or Armidale or Coffs harbor or Wollongong or basically the east coast of Australia on road trips and camping. I get fantastic 4G just like i did with telstra and can not tell the difference over the last year.. more money saved for a new phone :)

  • Are your Pay As You Go credit and your Data Pack credit treated separately?

My PAYG has 40 days left, if I get the 365 day Data Pack what happens?

    Thanks.

    • just checked the aldi app and it says your data pack will overwrite any existing data or value packs you may have. so PAYG should be ok.

  • +1

Also got an email that their L value pack data will increase from 2.25gb to 3gb starting today.

    • Thanks. XL also increases from 6GB to 7GB.

  • Anyone on aldi network using a cn version mate9 having mms issues?

    • +3

I found some phones I purchased from overseas derived my MMS settings as Telstra, however ALDImobile had different settings on their website. Whilst mobile data worked with the settings the phone detected, the MMS would not. Once I manually changed the APN to ALDI's below the MMS started working:

      Website

      Combined Data and MMS setting
      Name: Mobile Data
      APN: mdata.net.au
      Proxy: (blank)
      Port: (blank)
      Username: (blank)
      Password: (blank)
      Server: (blank)
      MMSC: http://mmsc.mdata.net.au:8003
      MMS proxy: 10.1.1.180
      MMS port: 80
      MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
      MCC: 505
      MNC: 01
      Authentication: (blank)
      APN type: default,dun,supl,mms
Only add these settings to your phone or device if the network settings aren't auto-detected.

      • I've already tried aldi apn settings still not working.

I can receive mms but can't send. I tried my mates Telstra SIM auto detected everything worked perfect

        • My tethering is limited to 3g and I'm pretty sure it's due to APN settings. Can't get it to work despite using aldi apn settings. Using the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X

Re " Good replacement for those old amaysim users on PAYG+one year data plan, who rarely calls/sends text",
I am one of those poor suckers. Having dragged many friends and family across to Amaysim , Ever since my 10gb data pack ran out and I had to start paying for 1gb at a time per month , my costs have blown out BIG time. The 1gb seems to disappear much quicker than it ever did before ( even though I am diligent to never access any streaming or other hungry content outside wifi. Then if I don't recharge quickly enough BOOM, the $15 auto credit starts to recharge every couple of days as it keeps reverting to the per mb ripoff which i think must be counting every static page as a mb or something . Attempts to ring Amaysim to try to discuss this issue ( who used to be pretty helpful in the past ) are now just a frustrating wind up torture of waiting for so long that you finally give up. So on it goes each month and of course their profits increase rapidly .
So is this ALDI deal the best answer to my nightmare ? If so I will ensure that all the people that I previously advised to come onboard will also be swapped across to ALDI . PS Not too worried about variable 4g outside of metro capital cities.

I used to be on Amaysim, and switched to Aldi - and have never regretted it. Much better coverage and cheaper. 2 phone plans totalling $35/month (and none of that "month = 28 days" rubbish)

  • The Telechoice plans are cheaper if you want an ongoing service. $29/5.5GB currently.

  • Does ALDI PAYG plan charge data per kb or per mb?

    • +1

      From FAQ:

The data supplied with your ALDImobile service is measured in Kilobytes and for from 16 December 2015 data is depleted in 1KB blocks (it was previously depleted in 25Kb blocks).

Moved to Aldi Mobile about 3 months ago, could not be happier with the experience I've had so far. The $25 L Cap is awesome, and it's just gotten even better with the monthly data allowance increasing to 3GB monthly. My mobile 4G/3G reception is better and more constant than it ever was on Vodafone (I know that sounds like it should be obvious, but I really didn't know what I was missing when I was on Vodafone).

  • So if you barely make any calls but do use data, you can buy $15 credit for calls/SMS, +95 for 20GB data, all to expire in 1 year? That sounds pretty good if true :)

    • +1

Only $5 needed for the starter pack.

    • The $95 pack is a data only pack I believe. So it's not a data add on unfortunately.

      • +5

        https://www.aldimobile.com.au/plans/95datapack/#/overlay/pla… says

If you want to be able to make calls and send SMS messages at the same time as using the $95 Data Pack, you will need to ensure you have Pay As You Go credit.

so it can coexist with a PAYG plan.

        • That's awesome, kinda glad you proved me wrong. Cheers!

        • That mean I can use same Sim PAYG , my phone ( lumia phone had only one sim slot) ?
          Thanks

        • +1

@Meganinja: yes mate hats right. Had it confirmed with aldi rep through chat as well.

        • @hashtagbargain:

Thanks , just recharge $95 data add on to my number , it said that would take 30 minutes to activate data add on .

        • @Meganinja: awesome. Let us know when it's working alright!

        • @hashtagbargain:
It is working about 15 mins after I recharge , aldi sent a SMS to my number to confirm.

  • Aldimobile data I have never been able to tether or use as wifi hotspot. Called their customer service a few times. They either hang up or have no clue.
    Moved on.

I am on stock android forever and used different mobiles to no avail. Set up all types of stuff I found via forums etc. Nothing worked for me.

    • I'll never touch Aldi mobile again after the acceptable data usage fiasco when they first launched and terminated mine and several friends accounts for using within the data limit supplied.

    • +1

I always tether off my wife's Nexus 5X on Aldi Mobile, when my Kogan/Vodafone sim has no/weak signal, and sometimes it's in my backyard…

    • +2

From scotty's comment https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4923739/redir I don't think it has anything to do with android necessarily.

FWIW, I can tether no problem with my iPhone.
