Why not use a free service like DuckDNS?

    • You could if all you need is a free Dynamic DNS .. I have a business website so I need a Fully qualified domain name so I get a url like www.mybusinessname.com instead of something like mybusinessname.noip.org that a free DNS would provide

What sort of business runs a webserver on a dynamic IP?

Yeah we used to block servers from dynamic ip ranges (notably mail). One bloke was whingeing that he couldnt get emails from his mate who ran a business server at home off a dynamic ip address. Since 99.9999% of emails from dynamic ips are from infected PCs

Op what do you run at home (and is it becuase its cheaper)

It sure can't be our reliable high speed internet in Australia.

Yeah always having problems with people thinking that running web and mail servers at home is a saving and they complain and waste everyones time when people have to troubleshoot why emails etc are not getting through.

And cpanel hosting is so cheap

          E.g. zuver has 1yr for $36 (or $18 for the 1st year using z50)
          https://zuver.net.au/web-hosting

          Its so simple.

          @supabrudda:

My website isn't on a Dynamic address - I pay No-IP for a Fully qualified domain name which links to a fixed IP I have from my ISP. I run a photography business and a local weather station on a MacMini, not because it's cheaper, but so I have full control over it.

        • @supabrudda:
That solution may suit some people, however my website also hosts the local weather using a weather station on my roof which also feeds seabreeze.com, as well as 3 x radios that feed Aircraft data to FlightRadar24, Ship data to Shipplotter and MarineRadio, and Amateur Radio tracking information to www.aprs.fi
I couldn't do any of that by using a hosted solution since my server needs hardwired connections to the equipment. If you're interested, my website is http://www.theshackbythebeach.com/wx

If you have a static ip just park your domain with namecheap and use their free DNS service. I use this for one of my domains and it works well.

I'm not sure if your solution of using namecheap would let me keep my domain name www.theshackbythebeach.com ?

Yep, all you have to do is transfer the name from your current register to namecheap.com (I posted a discount coupon a few weeks back - not sure if it's still valid) and use their DNS service to point the domain and www to your ip address.

Actually their FreeDNS service can be used by whoever you have your domain with now so you can try it for free and potentially get rid of no-ip who IMO charge far too much without having to transfer your domain.

I just checked out your site, I'm envious of the weather system that you have. I've been playing around with a few including the Netatmo that I just got rid of because it's rubbish and am contemplating my next move.

        • @vk2him: nice. Whats your weather station?

You run a mac, so there's your reason to host at home :-)

          Whats your weather station?

          http://wx.theshackbythebeach.com/wx/wxabout.php

My weather station is powered by a Davis Vantage Pro2 weather station. The data is collected every 3 seconds and the site is updated every 5 minutes for static pages or every 4 seconds for live data. This site and its data is collected using Weather Display Software. The station is comprised of an anemometer, a rain gauge and a thermo-hydro sensor situated in optimal positions for highest accuracy possible.

        • @Maverick-au:

You beat me to it :) - I feed the Gerroa wind data for Seabreeze https://www.seabreeze.com.au/weather/wind-forecast/nsw-illaw…

        • @Maverick-au:

Thanks for the info - I'll check it out - I have a year left now on my no-ip registration cause I used this deal lol

Why not use a free service like DuckDNS?

I use them and they're great, I donate $1 a month to keep them viable given the cost of the alternatives which I would suggest anyone does if they can afford it as there really aren't many free reliable alternatives.

edit: downvoted by a muppet for suggesting donations to a free service that is probably the only decent reliable one.
