[Updated] Consumer Alert: Domino's Just Shrunk Their Pizzas (and Boxes) about 10%?!

Just bought a pizza but it's about 30-40% 10% smaller. The box is too. Feel like I'm a victim of a bait and switch so thought I would share. If the smaller pizzas are here to stay it definitely reduces the value to us consumers.

Anyone else noticed this? I think it's just happened in the last week and they might be rolling it out progressively across different stores, or perhaps it's just a trial at certain stores? Is this here to stay?

I did a little research and it seems this was recently predicted by an analyst and is now a definite thing.

And I'm not the only one who's noticed. It seems even the Domino's official Facebook account is not denying it, but calling it a "new menu". Personally I think I will be buying less Domino's now and more HJ's stunners or $3 Aldi Pizzas haha.

Update: The new boxes are about 282 mm square and the pizzas are about 250 mm in diameter. Picture here. The store team member advised me that they are about half an inch smaller so it's about 10% smaller in surface area. Also he said it's part of their new menu and just changed in the last week or so.

POLL: If smaller Domino's pizzas are here to stay, how will your Domino's-buying habits change?

    I got a pizza yesterday and it was the same size as it has always been.

    Maybe they are trialling in certain areas only to gauge if they can't get away with it?

      One might argue that depends on the size of what you are trying to put in the box! (Ever tried to feed a tow rope through a needle?)

      …Sorry, off topic, I think the OP's main concern is with the size of what goes in the box. Its smaller than they are used to being satisfied with.

      Look at the polepoll, the verdict is in Dominos:
      SIZE MATTERS!

      Your assumptions are not fact, as I bought a pizza last week. My experience is eyewitness evidence and I'm not alone as there are others too. But this "assumption" is further supported by a newsworthy analyst report and not denied by Domino's officials.

    Just bought a pizza but it's about 30-40% smaller.

    please post measurements or it didn't happen.

    • Okay might have to go back with a ruler and I already threw out the box, but I did a rough measure with my handspan so box is about 30 cm square and pizza about 24 cm diameter.

      Feel free to post measurements from your store.

      • -1

        And can you please compare it against the measurement of the pizza you ordered last week

        • +7

          Yes. Last week box does not fit inside my 29 litre top box. This week it does.

        • @inherentchoice:

          And how does your top box compare with the size of your hand. And how much bigger was the box than your top box last week?

        • @k-rokfm: Good point. I will measure the top box. Also the Aldi frozen pizzas barely fit in the top box, so it's smaller than that.

        • +7

          @inherentchoice: Are you sure you didn't get a chef's best as those things a small?

        • -1

          They would only get sued if customers find out. If you can't feel/taste/see the snot, doesn't mean it doesn't have any. On top of that, these extra ingredients are more of a personal thing rather than company. In another words, at most the chef/waiter/cooker loses his job rather than go to court.

        • -1

          @John Kimble:

          @Ughhh: I think you might want to brush up on the concept of vicarious liability.

        • -1

          @Shiny Mew:

          You might want to brush up on your reading and comprehension. The employer is responsible and bears the cost, not the waiter who spat in your food. At most the waiter gets fired if caught, otherwise walks free like the last guy who decorated your meal with dandruff ;) . In another words, not much loss for the individual except for being fired.

        • -1

          @Ughhh:

          You need to improve your expression. You suggested that the addition of 'extra ingredients' was more likely to affect the employee, rather than the employer: 'more of a personal thing rather than company'. Vicarious liability is a tortious concept which imposes legal responsibility on the employer for the action of their employee(s) in certain, though none too onerous, circumstances.

        • @Shiny Mew:

          "Personal thing" as in the waiter having a grudge on you, rather than company itself….

          was more likely to affect the employee, rather than the employer:

          "In another words, at most the chef/waiter/cooker loses his job rather than go to court."

          Right… I don't know about you, but losing my job as a waiter sounds like a better deal than being sued for thousands. To put it in simple terms, waiter gets a slap on the wrist. Maybe you weren't the target audience for my comment, don't have time to write a step by step.

  • +1

    This Alert has already been posted - Last Year

    Domino's pizza's have shrunk - again!

    • Looks like theyve gone and done did it again. Got one earlier. Looks like a pizza pocket

  • +2

    Reducing the size of their pizza's has already been flagged.
    If a 12" pizza is reduced from 12" to 10", then the surface area of the pizza is reduced by 30%
    Effectively increasing the price of the pizza by 30% !!

    • -2

      113" to 78" is 30% reduction? :)

      • +4

        113.097 square inches to 78.539 square inches is a 30% reduction. But 113.097 is 44% more than 78.539.

    • +8

      If the quantity/size of an item reduces by 30% but the price stays the same, it actually becomes 42.8% more expensive! You would have to spend 142% of the price to get the original amount of pizza.

    • +6

      Effectively increasing the price of the pizza by 30% !!

      Should be 44%, not 30%.

        • +39

          Hey kid, nice try. Hold my hand and I'll guide you through this math problem.

          If a 12" pizza is reduced from 12" to 10", then the surface area of the pizza is reduced by 30%

          Ocker is saying a 12" pizza has reduced to 10". As such, the surface area has also reduced by 30%.

          Now, what he really means is the area that the pizza covers, not the surface area. We don't care about the area around the crust or the area at the bottom of the pizza.

          Do you recall the area of a circle?

          A = pi * d^2/2 = k * d^2 for some constant k, where A is the area, d is the diameter.

          So the area is proportional to the square of the diameter, which means:

          A1/A2 = d1^2/d2^2 for A1 is the original area, A2 is the new area, d1 is the original diameter and d2 is the new diameter.

          Sub in d1 = 12 and d2 = 10, and you get:

          A1/A2 = 0.69444…

          So the reduction from the original area is:

          1 - A1/A2 = 0.30555…

          So OP actually means 30.55% or 31% rounded to the nearest integer (but we'll give him the benefit of the doubt that he either dropped off the decimal or rounded to the nearest 10%).

          Okay, the next part of the problem:

          Effectively increasing the price of the pizza by 30% !!

          Ocker is saying the price has also increased by 30%. We'll see about that.

          Suppose the price per area is proportional which means:

          x2/A2 = x1/A1, for x1 is the original price and x2 is the new price.

          Rearranging the variables we get:

          x2/x1 = A2/A1
          x2/x1 = 1/(A1/A2)

          Sub in A1/A2 = 0.69444… and we get:

          x2/x1 = 1.44

          So the increase in price is:

          x2/x1 - 1 = 0.44

          Therefore, the new price is effectively 44% more than the original price.

          Btw, it's you're welcome.

        • -3

          @ronnknee:

          My working out checks out for size. I didn't really take note of the price part. Like I said. U don't need the area. U can work it off the bounding box 12x12 and 10x10. Same result. 30.55

          As shrinking is also an equal ratio for the pizzas.
