[Updated] Consumer Alert: Domino's Just Shrunk Their Pizzas (and Boxes) about 10%?!

Just bought a pizza but it's about 30-40% 10% smaller. The box is too. Feel like I'm a victim of a bait and switch so thought I would share. If the smaller pizzas are here to stay it definitely reduces the value to us consumers.

Anyone else noticed this? I think it's just happened in the last week and they might be rolling it out progressively across different stores, or perhaps it's just a trial at certain stores? Is this here to stay?

I did a little research and it seems this was recently predicted by an analyst and is now a definite thing.

And I'm not the only one who's noticed. It seems even the Domino's official Facebook account is not denying it, but calling it a "new menu". Personally I think I will be buying less Domino's now and more HJ's stunners or $3 Aldi Pizzas haha.

Update: The new boxes are about 282 mm square and the pizzas are about 250 mm in diameter. Picture here. The store team member advised me that they are about half an inch smaller so it's about 10% smaller in surface area. Also he said it's part of their new menu and just changed in the last week or so.

POLL: If smaller Domino's pizzas are here to stay, how will your Domino's-buying habits change?

        • People are reporting it has changed from 11" to 9.5". Learn not to believe everything you read. Either claim could be true (surface area or diameter).

  • +8

Haha wow. Having priced other low cost competitors such as eagle boys and pizza hut out of the market, Dominos are free to do whatever they want. As consumers we only have ourselves to blame.

    • Pretty much spot on.

  • Stop using those 40% off Domino's voucher and you might get full size

    • Hahahaha. Stop using discounts because Dominos might out of the goodness of their hearts keep pizza sizes large. Why don't I just donate directly to the CEO while I'm at it?

  • It's not gonna be a quick change. Each store has hundreds of pans that will have to be replaced. It will take time for stores to use up existing dough, then swap pans.

They did this many years ago with the change from 11inch to 10.5inch. Then shortly after, they revised the amount of dough. Deep pan dough started at 450g,then 410g, then 380g, then 350g. With each reduction comes more yield per batch which means more profit per pizza.

That being said, the cost of ingredients has gone up over the years, as has the wages. When you fight for increases in wages, you get inflation in prices to offset the increased labour cost. It's an endless cycle. Their margins have probably not increased much, if at all from the reduction in size of their dough.

I'd be fine with them reducing the dough if the amount of toppings was not reduced as well.

I just want to eat pizza that doesn't give me diarrhoea.

Last time I had Dominos, which was a week ago, I wasn't even that lucky. It all went into the bin. Waste of $45 or so.

    • +2

      $45 or so

I think not eating $45 of pizza will help with your toilet troubles.

    • +3

I recommend using the toilet not the bin next time you have diarrhoea. Easier to clean up after.

  • They all have been doing it ( in supermarket ). From Arnott to Pizza boxes. Remember Savoy used to come in 250g box. But they cost also goes up to, dont be fool by the 1/2 price 30% 20$ off. They are just trying to compensate for the inflation I suppose.

  • Poor subway. Good luck on them reducing the size of their foot-long subs.

As for dominoes I usually go for chef best, which are kind of already reduced size.

    • Subway is screwed of they try shrinking the their foot longs. ACCC false advertising.

      • +1

        No.
They have previously (successfully) claimed in lawsuits abroad that the "Footlong" is a trademark of Subway Systems in each respective country and, therefore, not to be used as a reference to the length of the product.

        • Do you have are reference for this?

        • You think this arguement would work on social media.

They got caught reducing their footlongs not too long ago. They said it was a supplier issue and they have strict specifications.

  • Well they are a lot smaller if you compare from a few years ago. I just buy from crust these days.

    • Crust is just too expensive imo

      • yeah, I only use them when they send me a free side offer and only order 1 pizza.

      • They have their cheaper Pizza Capers brand as well. Both Crust and Pizza Capers are owned by the same company.

  • Considering all the vouchers, and the overall price of their pizzas, I still think they're good value, even if they are a bit smaller.

Our local Eagle Boys closed down recently so we tried Dominoes as it is the next closest. I wasn't prepared for how bad Dominoes pizzas are in comparison to Eagle Boys. I realise each Eagle Boys store was very different and maybe the same is true for Dominoes as well, but our local Dominoes make terrible pizzas. Have since moved to making our own pizzas - so much better!

    • -3

You should've gone to Dominos Pizza.

  • I dont care too much about the smaller size so long as the pricing is still as cheap as it usually is. TBH, i hate that they use the coupon pricing so much - why not just reduce prices to a price that they normally sell for anyway?
The smaller size is good in that I order more different 'flavours' when people come over rather then just 2 bigger ones.
That being said, hopefully they bring in a 'family' size at some point…
Anyone else order the 'deep pan' so as to get more pizza for your money like me?

  • +3

Hey I work at a franchise and I can say I have not heard anything about down sizing our pizzas and it's not a practical implementation

Our pans for the pizzas are a set size and would all need to be replaced to accomodate a smaller size I would assume, especially for thin and cheesy crust

That being said, sometimes if the dough isn't left out to rise long enough it won't fill the pan fully, resulting in a smaller pizza, even though it's the correct weight
    300g for classic
    400g for deep

But also franchise are the last to hear of any changes, sometimes on the day of the change, also corporate stores often trail new products

    • I always order deep to maximise my carbs…didnt realise it was so much more dough!

    • Out of curiosity, what does a dough ball for thin crust weigh?

I generally feel like I get more toppings when I order thin.

  • So they're reducing the cost AND the size?!

  • +1

I work at Domino's and (at my store at least) everything is the same size except the amount of ice cream in the milkshake (went from 310g to 300g. We haven't had any new pans in the last year.

    • +2

By the looks of it, get ready for some shiny new pans to come in very soon; probably as small as tea plates. Keep us posted.

  • +1

Soon they will look like this.

  • My fault.

    Sorry!

  • I stopped buying Dominos when the quality fell.
I think that was about their second month of operation here!

Dominos are certainly happy to drive away customers. Paying extra only on weekends… shrinking the size. (Which has already shrunk in the past.) Also noticed the other day they've deleted one of my mogul pizzas, so I couldn't order it while I was out in the car, and gain credit. Despite them claiming a satisfaction guarantee they've never honored it when I've received near-empty pizzas. Oh - and when I got it home a couple of nights ago (a supreme with capsicum removed and lamb added) - it had barely anything on it (again), but had so much spring onion trying to hide that fact, that it looked like a lawn. Yep, pretty fed up with them myself.

    • +2

Why do you keep going back then?

      • Not hard to guess reasons why. You're sick and don't feel like cooking. Or away from home, hungry, no way to cook obviously. Or you try a different store. Dominos here shuts at 11pm, but supermarket shuts at 9pm and KFC shuts at 8pm so you don't have a lot of choice - it's Dominos or corn flakes for dinner… Not sure how that invalidates what I said anyway.

        • Make a sandwich. Not that hard and better for you. People have fridges yeah?

        • @gimme:

If you're makiing a sandwich, particularly with white bread, you might as well be eating the doughie pizza. Your body turns it all into glucose anyway.

        • @syousef:
Who said white bread? Far more nutritional options if people could be bothered. Sadly everyone's very time poor these days…. yet Netflix seems to be going gangbusters.

        • @gimme:

After 10 hours at the office and 2 hours of community then dealing with chores for a couple of hours, some people have very little energy left for much more than TV.

        • +1

          @syousef:

Yup and an overprocessed, salty greasy dominos pizza provides the perfect nutritional balance to face the next fullfiling day and the next.

The efficiencies gained out of eating hwalthy food would far outweigh the time taken to prepare it. Sadly a lot of people never work that out.

        • @gimme:

You're not listening. Some people are very time poor and exhausted by the time they get home. If you're getting home at 5pm, cooking dinner sounds okay. If you're getting home at 8pm, 9pm, 10pm…cooking's not something you're going to want to do. Nor is it something a sick person, or a new sleep deprived mum is oging to want to do. Not everyone gets to play Masterchef.

        • +1

          @syousef:

Who said mchef? This conversation started with a sandwich. Takes less time to make a sandwich with some salad then order a pizza. Anyway that's a choice people make. A lot of those who tried to save a couple of mins now will spend much longer in doctors surgeries chemists and hospitals when diabetes, heart issues and other junk food related conditions kick in.

        • @gimme:

          You brought up preparing food.

And I repeat a sandwich is not that much healthier than a pizza. Whether you get your carbs from processed bread or processed pizza dough your body will process it to the same thing. So unless you're talking a salad sandwich on brown bread making a sandwich isn't going to be that different.

Have you ever seen a mother on 2hrs/night sleep who is barely coping? Want to tell her to go make her own sandwich? How about a shift worker after a 12 hour shift with a wrecked body clock?

Of course unhealthy eating leads to health issues, but you're making it sound like people are just lazy. Modern life can be toxic.

        • @syousef:

          Lol nvm. Get some sleep.

        • To be honest you list some good realistic reasons there

  • Anyone recognised that Costco cut corners as well?

About two months ago Costco dropped the Combo option out from Pizza menu, BBQ chicken with feta cheese now comes with more BBQ than chicken and if you're lucky you'll get a tiny bit of rubber feta on one slice!

  • We grew up on pizza hut or eagles boys back in the 2000s. Curious as now i've ordered some dominos in the last few months after our family stopped post 2010 ordering family pizza nights. Curious if the dominos size, which i thought was already small to begin with, is comparable to pizza hut and eagle boys? have they unfortunately shrunk theirs too?

It checks out that the dominos vouchers are on every day to my inbox. always 3 pizzas for a good price, but they do feel smaller. I still remember pizza hut boxes feeling like a decent square size and all, maybe time to go back? Hopefully they haven't shrunk too since the 2000s (anyone care to comment)?!

  • Get a proper pizza from La Lupa in Tyabb, Vic instead.

  • Demolition Man movie predicted this.

  • I stopped buying Big Macs about 20 years ago because they shrunk significantly & the price continued to rise. McDonald's deny this all along. Either tolerate it or boycott it.

  • This forum makes me lol internally.

A few months back there was hardly a bad word said about Dominos….and when there was everyone jumped to their defence. Now they are no longer a social media darling, everyone has come out of the closet to (deep) pan them. Kind of glad to see I am no longer in the minority here and others have seen the on going manipulation of the public.
