Where's the bargain? Everything is cheaper on Book Depository.

To clarify a bit further, I voted negative because:
    1) Booktopia (unlike Borders) is directly comparable to Book Depository, since they are both online bookstores. Prices for all(?) books are cheaper on Book Depository, and delivery times for Book Depository purchases, although slightly longer (6-10 business days), are acceptable and actually quite good considering the warehouse is 15000+km away.
    2) The rep posted this deal. Although OzBargain exclusive coupons are highly appreciated, this is not a place for purely advertising.

    Thanks for your feedback jkiht9.

Comparing Booktopia to Book Depository is misguided. Booktopia is 100% Australian, Book Depository is 100% UK. All your money to Book Depository is going offshore. Borders is a chain, owned by venture capitalists, Booktopia is privately-owned and 100%-independent.

We love telling you about bargains, especially exclusive coupons.

The rest of your comment is your preference and prerogative.

    Thanks again and happy shopping,

    Booktopia.

You Australian book stores better start being aware of international competitiveness or else the book depository will destroy you all. If it means getting it at a significantly cheaper price, a consumer is willing to wait several more days for a book.

We aren't comparing Australian made to UK made, the book will be the same regardless; and thanks to the book depository we Australians (or just me…) have come to realize how much Australian book stores have been ripping us off.

      • Australian book sellers must purchase from Australian publishers if they hold the rights to a work. Australian publishers are protected from international competition thanks to parallel import restrictions. Australian book sellers are competing against international book sellers on the internet, but their primary input cost - the publishers which sell them the books - are protected from such competition. Meanwhile, (as far as I'm aware) Australian publishers are free to actually print their books in the cheapest market ( eg - China).

If you want to know more about this - checkout the Productivities Commission's investigation into Parallel Import Restrictions.

The Rudd government initiated the investigation, then rejected the conclusion that the market should be opened.
