if you don't want to order from overseas and wait forever there is always this seller on eBay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HOT-Original-Quality-RSA-Raspberr…

with c5oz coupon it is $55 delivered aus to aus. same if you order from element14 where it's $49 + gst delivered

    • +1

Yep, $54.45 inc GST shipped from Element14 and typically delivered overnight for orders placed by 6pm.

    • -1

It's $49.01 delivered from RS: they have both the UK version and the made in Japan version for the same price.

      • +1

        no it isn't

        • Ah, forgot about GST - my bad. Still $53.91 delivered though.

        • -1

Exactly - the price on RS doesn't include GST either, which makes it slightly more expensive than Element14.

          Price (ex. GST) Each

          @DrDuck:

Pretty sure $53.91 is cheaper than $54.45. So it appears that RS is cheaper than E14.

      • What's the difference between the UK and Japan versions? I can't spot any different from looking at the specs.

        • there is no difference. Sony have a factory in Wales who took up the Raspberry Pi production for them and they have also set up for the Japanese market in a Sony factory inside Japan.

they are made in Wales, China and Japan and they are all exactly the same

        • Yep I have a China and UK version …..quality is the same.

    • Use COZZIE on ebay for $52.65

  • Wish I had a use for more of them to be honest.

htpc, NAS, download machine, pihole, retro gaming system, just some of the things I use some for

      • I got a NAS that does download. No interest in retro and I got a nice HTPC. My current one is pihole.

I'm thinking about a nice VPN gateway outside though for the NAS to use to ummm collect things.

        • buy a playstation 3 dual HD TV tuner for $20 and connect it to your Pi, install tvheadend on the pi and you can stream live tv to any device in your house (phones, laptops, desktops, tablets, etc) and record stuff too same as a PVR

if you turn your pi into a VPN server you can connect to it from wherever you are so you aren't going via dodgy ass public wifi connections when travelling

For someone starting out on their first raspberry, hoping to use it to run home assistant and Plex, what add-ons do I need to budget for? Case, power supply, …? (I'm currently using an old laptop, but everyone in the forums seems to to be using pi's and I'm hoping the power savings might justify the new device).

    • Following this.

buy the official 2.5A psu, its about 14 bucks at e14 … most others will give you issues (or MIGHT give you issues) so buy it right first time…. I have one with no case and no heatsinks just sitting behind my tv, no issues at all…. I guess you could stick it in the box it comes in, or buy a 4 buck case on DX or ebay… not needed though unelss you have to stare at it constantly

you can get away with just Pi + power supply + micro SD card… thats all you need for basics, case optional

if you have a box of leggo at home you can use that to build a case, hit google images 'raspberry pi leggo case'

if you feel like splurging get a Pi Desktop case, it has a power button on top that lights up and looks pimp.. lets you connect a sata drive inside it too

      • This!

  • shipping seems to be taking awhile

  • worst shipping ever
