Seen as low as $198 before.

Probably wouldn't pay that much for a dedicated 4k Blu-ray player when game consoles like Xbox One S are cheaper same price and more flexible in terms of what they do.

Why would anyone buy this over an Xbox One S?

Quieter, arguably better picture quality at least when i read reviews last Christmas xbox maybe better now if improved via updates.

Xbone needs updates almost weekly. Takes a while to boot up, then you have to run the Blu-ray app. It works great, but takes more time to set up each time you want to watch something. Also no Dolby Vision support BTW. ;)

The XB1S is not a 4K player.. its a gaming console.. that can also play 4K discs.. but not as well as a quality dedicated 4K player.

For someone on a tight budget who likes games and movies, the XB1S is a great buy because it plays games really well, and plays 4K discs OK - for one low price.
But anyone with a home theatre focus would not buy an Xbox just to play 4K discs. They would buy a dedicated 4K player. Or they would buy both if they wanted both :)

So to answer your question, there are valid reasons why people who would buy a dedicated player like this and NOT an Xbox One S.

This is ozbargain. If we spent same amount of money on two devices to do same thing because we were not ok with ok quality then no point being here. Many of those who would use 4K on xbox has cheap tvs bought from Aldi or target, so quality is already just ok.

        • +1

Any statistical proof of "many of those"?
I see other TV brands such as LG / Sony / Samsung being very popular on Ozbargain too.
If this is ozbargain then we should stop posting other branded tvs and only post tv's like sonia, bhaun and what ever target sells….

@lplau: I am not doing statistics bearu work here. I am talking about paying for two devices to do same thing. Those people who buy tvs from Target don't go on buying from other store as well because the target/aldi one is just ok quality so need another tv for better quality. Again it doesn't apply to all because some use one for monitor and other for different rooms etc.

    • Because not everybody's a gamer

    Also, no Dolby Vision support.

Sure there are only two UHDs that have it so far, but there will be more.

  • Good deal, UHD Blurays are costing me a bundle and making it very hard to to need to go movies!

It makes me wonder if this will be the last major physical medium ever. People won't go for 8k or anything similar in even 10 years.

  • 8K in Japan years ago, they skipped 4K.
