Theses are good but somehow tasted better in Japan - not sure why.
    Perhaps just perception

    • +3

"After tireless taste testing using local ingredients, the Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart has succeeded in recreating a Hokkaido cheese flavour perfectly."
      http://www.hbctaus.com.au/pages/our-story

They dont use real Hokkaido milk or cheese perhaps.

      • +6

        or they are not Japanese….

        • -3

          That's racist

        • +1

@Ryballs: How racist ? by pointing out the claimed product maker's not associate with what the product original from is racist ?

        • +3

I was joking. Guess that didn't come across..

        • Next time:

          That's racist /s
          or
          That's racist j/k

        • @Ryballs:

Fairly obvious you were joking but I suppose these finger wagging, liberal clowns do exist.

        • @gasman70: Obvious it's joking ? how obvious again? cant read/see your face not sure how you react and now bringing in politics, what's next ?

To be fair Hokkaido milk doesn't compare to our milk.

But yes, dlovep is correct, the company is not Japanese.

        • Is Hokkaido milk better than ours?

        • +3

@Yaren24: Nope. I had it in Hokkaido and it does not compare. Also tried every milk brand I could find in FamilyMart and they all tasted like UHT milk.

In my opinion, our best milk is Paul's Farmhouse Gold blue or gold caps.

          I love milk. :)

        • @pogichinoy:

I generally buy the A2 milk, Gold caps too. There are so many products in Japan I have not tried.

Since we have a bigger land, we might have better dairy products overall. Even though they pack it and make it look really, sometimes I still prefer the dairy products here :)

          @pogichinoy:
The best drinking milk might not necessarily make the best tarts.

        • @pogichinoy:

The Gold is the best milk available anywhere. Wonderful stuff.

  • Love these

The one in Japan is called BAKE.

This HBCT is from Malaysia but they use the similar colour scheme and packaging as BAKE.

  • -5

For the love of God they are egg tarts. I'm sorry by why on earth do they call them cheese tarts?

  • +2

Thanks op for the post. Being a Chinese person, pretty certain these are owned and operated by the Chinese, aka, fake fake fake. Especially, there are typos in their Japanese marketing material.

    • +3

The original brand is from Malaysia (by the same guy who founded Secret Recipe). The Australian franchise is operated by ST Group, which also runs Nene Chicken and PappaRich in Australia.

      • Right so these are Average Hokkaido Tarts then… ;)

  • +3

Japan's version is better in my opinion…and waaay cheaper.

    • Welcome to Sydney :)

      • You mean welcome to Australia:-P

  • Havent tried the Japan version but I ate this yesterday. Meh. Free is free though

  • I think these taste alright (not having tried Japanese ones), but like a lot of these baking and snack places I think they're a bit of rip-off. I guess I'm just a quantity over quality sort of guy lol. Whether it's donuts, these tarts, bread from Breadtop/Maxim, it all just seems so expensive for 1 snack sized item.

  • Tried these at the Melbourne city shops. Really wanted to enjoy them. Taste was oddly ordinary and they were way over packaged. Exxy too.

    Much better snacks around.

    • Agreed.
Then again, everything is expensive in Australia and especially Sydney.

  • Can't believe no one mentioned that it is for the first 100 people. It's in their Facebook if anyone wants to confirm.

  • Shop is legit Japanese or just another Chinese/Korean pretender mob?

    • +2

      Chinese.

    • I dont think its right to say "just another Chinese/Korean pretender" like that.
They are completely distinct cultures and people.

This stuff is the bomb! So velvety sweet and savoury! I hope it's the real deal!

  • How is that Grand Opening as they were already open on Thursday? :-)

  • I live on Cheddar Road, so I say with some authority that these cheese tarts are the bomb!

  • Milk here is different from in Japan! Yummy but I agree they taste better in Japan

Originated in Malaysia but done well across Asia.

In saying that I really don't understand the hate though whether it originally came from here and there and all the stereotyping eg it's Chinese running a Japanese shop etc. I mean you have some of the top Australian/Asian chefs doing the best European desserts, Koreans doing good Japanese food, Japanese doing good Chinese food (even ramen was originally from China), etc. I really hate these limiting stereotypes although hate all stereotypes whether it related to gender, race, religion, etc. Some of the best food I have had include German and Indian food in Japan and even Asian food from non-Asian chefs here.

    • +1

Just the typical Sino hating mob and a few Chinese self haters. Nothing unusual.

  • Free….cheese….baked…..tarts. What's not to like?

  • +4

EVERYONE should unfollow them, I saw a very bad behavior…
90year old lady lined up BUT the pimply uni student refused her a free tart cos she didnt follow hem on facebook. motherfarkers! She diidnf even have a smartphone dude
