Basically this.
Some web servers will now even automatically enrol and renew certificates for you, you don't need to do anything at all for HTTPS… it just happens. See https://caddyserver.comVentraIP is one of them. I absolutely love those guys!*
*I am not in any way, shape, or form affiliated or ever been affiliated with VentraIP.
Second this
*Also not affiliated with them, just a happy customer.
unfortunately, Zuver makes you manually renew your letsencrypt certificate every 90 days. a PITA and one reason I'll probably be leaving zuver/ventraip when my hosting comes up for renewal.
Let's Encrypt is fantastic, but they don't offer wildcard certificates. If you need really need a wildcard cert (and you probably don't) this looks like a good deal.
Edit: Or not, I thought it was $90 for 3 years…
they don't offer wildcard certificates
Not a deal at all, so many cheaper options.
Or you could just use lets encrypt and add each sub domain..
any recommendation for cheap ssl certs?
If you don't need wildcard or EV certs: https://letsencrypt.org
If this was the price for 3 years, it would be ok.
I got my last one from ssl2buy, US$38 per year.Normal ssl certificates offer insurance. I don't think letsencrypt is insured.
What does the insurance cover you, the buyer of the cert?
I use GoGetSSL for some of my SSL certificates, and they resell the same RapidSSL wildcard for USD $78.22/year for 3 years — no discount code needed.
Comodo PositiveSSL Wildcard is also cheaper at USD $58.62/year for 3 years. I used to use RapidSSL as it does not need an intermediate CA, but these days I usually just buy the cheapest (usually PositiveSSL).
As of LetsEncrypt — I use it for some sites but due to the way verification works, it does not cover all the applications.
