Free Fitness First 2 Week Guest Membership

108

Thought I'd share a link I received in a birthday email from Fitness First - they're offering a free two week guest membership. Let the Fitness First flaming begin..

mod

From the link

  • Subject to Fitness First terms and conditions of entry (available in club).
  • Valid for first time visitors and local residents 16 years and older only.
  • The voucher entitles the named person to a guest membership at the selected Fitness First Health club.
  • Photo ID is required for entry. Only 1 voucher can be used per person.
  • Valid for 14 consecutive days commencing and including the date the voucher is redeemed.
  • Not valid with any other offer.
  • Valid only at club where voucher is redeemed.
  • Vouchers that have been photocopied, altered or damaged will not be accepted.
  • Must be used by 31/10/10.

Note that, as some of the terms and conditions are only available when you get to the club, it makes it harder to evaluate if this is a deal or not.

Some members refer to a possible cancellation fee at the end of 2 weeks but there appears to be nothing mentioned in the provided terms and conditions (granted there are other terms and conditions not displayed).

Perhaps a rep from Fitness First could come onto the site and reply about the cancellation fee?

Just letting it out there that I had a monthly contract with Fitness First and I had A LOT of drama's cancelling the damn thing. First off, I was on a yearly contract and downgraded to monthly (I was within the 7 day period).

From there, I stopped going due to personal reasons and it nearly took them up to 3 months to cancel the damn contract. They had every excuse in the book ranging from "our system has you on the yearly contract" to "our cancellation worker only works on Monday-Wednesday and you must book her from 1pm-3pm".

    Very, very shifty.

This it the first free "hit" from the Finance First dealers before they steal your soul ;-) Most gyms these days will give you a free trial in order to get an opportunity to pressure you to sign up longer.

  • +3

I'm sure they'll give you 2 free weeks whenever you ask, I doubt it's a one time deal, and FF doesn't have a good reputation for contracts.

    • +1

Please tell me which rep/centre will do that for you normally and I'll get all my friends to sign up straight away!

      • +1

I don't have a specific gym in mind but everytime I walk past one there's offers about free trials on signboards (also sales reps that are quick annoying), I assume any gym would generally let you have a few days free to entice you. This is only my opinion, do your own research.

There is a permanent FF kiosk at Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre and everyday at lunch time the annoying sales personel will be standing there offering 2 wks free trial.

This is not a bargain. Merely a gimmick to suck you into a contract.

I signed up once before and 2 months into a contract, I was diagnosed with a Mitral Valve heart disease. I went in to suspend my account until after my surgery and they refused to do it citing they can only suspend for 1 month.

So I opted to cancel and they wanted me to pay out the remainder of my 10 months. In the end I had to get the ombudsman to step in to sort it out. I will never go to another FF.

  • mod - you know we need a proper reason given when voting negative …

This stuff should not be on OzBargain.

  • +1

Exactly, just go away. Not a bargain. Who would join FF for FFS.

  • +3

stay away from dodgy fitness first.. it has even been featured countless times on Today Tonight/Current Affiar about their dodgy practices..

    • I'm SO glad we have the uprighteous protector of consumer rights Today Tonight/ Current Affairs to guide our lives! God Bless their souls.

      • lol

  • I pay my $50.90 a week to use whichever Fitness First in Sydney I'm near, suburban or city (there's 5 in the CBD) and I'm pretty happy. I know they love contracts and are well known for making it hard to opt-out but I find it the best way to stay fit. It's enjoyable too. There's usually friendly people working the desk and the trainers are always happy to help out with a machine or technique question. Yes people like to stare, usually the ones on steroids or spend their lives on the leg press. But there's girls there too. I know everyone loves to hate big evil companies but I haven't come across anything too nasty myself.

Hope this helps some other people get fit and looking how they want to look!

      $50.90/Week???????????

Wow you seriously need to shop around

      • Err… fortnight :P

        • +2

50.90 a fortnight!!!!?? Wow you seriously need to shop around

          • @user27: I got my girl $29.90 a fortnight. tchu notta negotiater, Okay

          • @user27: I'm with them at the moment paying the same. Get to go to several different gyms which works best for me as there is one close to work and one close to home. Plus there are a lot of better bits n bobs that make it worth it. One great thing is the 4 person free trainer sessions. None else is doing it so I get a personal trainer for no extra ^-^

Its really down to the persons circumstances. Works for me so no complaints here.
Achieving a lot more than when I was paying $15 or so a week at the uni gym.

        • $50.90 a fortnight?! Happily paid by an Ozbargainer?! ;-) Now I know how gym owners pay for their Hummers and contract writers ;-) I guess they keep fit by lugging the bags of money into the back of their Hummers.

          • @daydream: Different people have different situations suited by different circumstances but … I am in a different state and with a different gym but I thought Fitness First offers cheaper than that for gold memberships over here …?

    • $50.90 a week!

      EDIT: OOPS, you corrected it

  • +1

no way is this a bargain. FF are terrible when it comes to canceling a gym membership.

    • +3

Who said anything about signing up for a membership in the first place?

    • pick me !!! pick ME!!!

    • is that for all Gold members? the bring friends on weekend part.

      • Need to be a member for at least a year. I THINK it applies for normal members as well.

    • +1

$13 per week for Gold Membership? BULL CRAP! Proof please.

      • +1

im pretty sure Mencius has some affiliation with Fitness First.

      • +1

They did have this promotion. Needless to say it didn't last long, but the people who got in on it.. good on them.

        • I don't go to Fitness First, but I'm also on a Gold Membership which is a bit less than $13.

Mine is partly to do with:
          - prepay
          - only the first 12 months are gold, with the last 3 reverting to regular
          - a $100 voucher was thrown in for clothing (but that was because the girl who I was dealing with helped me out a bit more :) )

I don't think we should blame FF entirely. One should stand firm and not get sucked in by their tactics! Oh, and remember not to sign anything without reading it thoroughly! I would rather get dirty looks from FF staff than sign away my soul to them(:

  • FF are terrible, was a member there for about a year, was impossible to quit and they called me 4 times a day for 3 months trying to get me back and trying to get my friends to join.
It is so expensive and your membership goes up monthly - avoid, avoid, AVOID!!!!

  • No Thanks . It might be free but you have to put up with their incessant hard sell sales people .Not enjoyable .

  • Like how the current fitness first members/reps are the only ones giving it a good rating , anyone else who has experienced it with actual information says its crap, no doubt who i beleive.

  • +1

    BEWARE of these CROOKS!!
They will make you signup for a 2 week membership and then demand $70 cancellation fee.
Go for it but just DONT signup any paperwork.

  • +4

    It's a TRAP!!

    • The cake is a lie!

  • Id be very wary as they are very pushy trying to get you to sign a contract. Not enjoyable & Not a good deal.

  • +2

For those wondering where their negative votes have gone, I've removed them because they do not fit within our voting guidelines. If you think that this deal is not a bargain or the offer shouldn't be posted, at the very least please state a reason why. Saying that it's not a deal, or this shouldn't be posted, or it's a trap without further explanation isn't really helpful as a warning to others.

And let's be civil in our discussion. You're more than welcome to express your personal opinion and concerns about the deal or the company, but please leave out the personal attack.

Ok, so from the numerous user experiences on this thread, free passes for gym sessions would likely involve a high sales pitch and pressure into signing a contract. All I can say is, as with anything that requires you to sign a contract, do your research first. Here's a random article that I got from google to get you started:

I took the coupon to the North Strathfield branch and one of the trainers tried to sell it off as a 2 week trial that came with a 1 year contract (trying to make me pay the $70 setup fee etc etc). What a load of BS… So I demanded to talk to his manager… who gave in to the deal and I got my 2 week pass (free - But not without some tension) which is totally crap coz every time I go there and see that trainer its bloody awkward. Not really worth the effort

Confirms Finance First's sales practices… and their deserved reputation. Sure, they really care about our health/wellbeing lol.

      • +1

Well, they are always willing to help your wallet lose that unsightly bulge! ;)

      • checked out their website and found in the top right corner ( http://www.fitnessfirst.com.au/accc ) . There is a corrective notice from the Australian competition and consumer commission… kind of sums up everything that this blog is talking about
