Anybody know how Future Gear warranties work? They say 3-year Limited Hardware Warranty and 3-year Advanced Exchange but they are a NZ seller so I'm not sure if that's through them or Dell.

Dell are generally really good and you can go straight through them anyway. Probably the best option regardless.

      • For AU sellers sure, but I don't think they'd cover you for a NZ purchase

Having the opposite experience at the moment.

Called up Dell support, and they organised for me to send my laptop in for repairs and I did so last week (keys came off, freezes and needs a force restart daily, along with the screen playing up since I got it back from them for repairs for it not charging, even with other chargers) and got a call yesterday from Malaysia and it was Dell support, they kept telling me to email them a picture of the keyboard to show what's wrong, I kept saying that I can't since I don't have the laptop because I sent it in for repairs like they told me to, but she kept on telling me to send a photo anyway.

Eventually she asked how the keys came off, so I said "they were loose and coming off, so I removed them to put them back on but they wouldn't stay in place" (possibly a damaged retainer clip)
She said "Okay, so you caused physical damage to the laptop. We're going to send it back to you without repairs, then I want you to send a picture of the keyboard and I'll send you the cost for repairs and you can send it back in again"

I know I shouldn't have removed the keys, but they were only half clicked in, and I've never had (too much) trouble clipping laptop keys back in. Also, if you're wondering, the laptop is still in warranty for both parts and maintenance.

Fight it. I'm too busy tonight to write out instructions but fight it.

Dell are not known for bad CS

I chatted to Dell yesterday and they told me that they don't cover purchases from outside AU. The warranty is not international.

That's odd, I guess things may have changed since the last time I got something repaired by them.

Purchased a laptop here, lived in Japan and it broken down, Dell in Japan had no issues with repairing it for free, was still with in warranty period.

  • I have owned one of these for about a year now and it is fantastic.

I had numerous 27" monitors in the past at 2560x1440, but always dreamed of the same resolution on a smaller screen. They finally arrived in the last few years, and this 23.6" at 2560x1440 is awesome!

I also have the same panel in a BenQ. Great also.

Is there any specific reason why you would want 1440p@60Hz in a smaller form factor?

      • +2

Higher ppi I expect is the main reason. Much sharper image.

        • +1

It's not good for lower resolution stuff though. I have a 25" QHD monitor and lower res stuff is too small.

        • True true, at high ppi you're relying on Windows scaling to save the day.

        • @lostn: I have the same issue on my 27", and 1080p on a 13" - it's not very practical :(

        As above.
2650x1440 on a 23.6" is perfect at native resolution.
1920x1080 on a 12.5" is perfect at native resolution.

        • +3

"Perfect" depends on viewing distance. 12.5" would be too small where my monitor is positioned. For a tablet it is fine, though I would want something higher than that.

How does this compare to the dell U2417H ?

    • +2

      I'm curious too.

The whole point of getting a QHD (2560x1440) is for the better image quality, but for movies, games, photography, etc surely even a 1080p Ultrasharp is going to look better than this…? (and, of course, run games more smoothly).

Should be better for spreadsheets, though, but I imagine most people considering it are probably better off with the better colour reproduction, real contrast, and such, over an increase in resolution at only 24 inches…

I had a P2416D, passed it onto my brother and got a U2515H. To me, both of them output similar colours out of the box. If it came between the U2417H and P2416D, I'd get the P2416D again without hesitation, the extra resolution is amazing and I found it's overall performance more than satisfactory for general use, casual gaming and photo editing.

Got this from the dell outlet used. So far so good(got it for $233)

Edit: to add to that it's frequently on the dell outlet if anyone is interested in saving $67. It's used but it comes with a year warranty

  • How is this compared to the p2417h model?

    • P2416D is 1440p whereas the P2417H is 1080p.

  • would prefer a 27" model

  • Very tempting argh. But I will probably go a 27inch dell instead next year.
