Great price and awesome doorbell. Have had mine for around six months now, absolutely love it!

    • Are you paying for the cloud service?

      • +1

Agree with savagecarrot. Got mine installed hardwored. And the cloud service is $30usd annually so def worthwhile as you can play back all rings, live views, etc.

Paid $230 including a chime last year.

        • Is this local stock that you bought for 230 with chime?

Does Ring replace stolen door bells from local Aus stock? If I remember correctly when launched in the US I think they mentioned they do.

        • @kunfushun: yup bought it during Black Friday deals. And it doesn't matter where you buy it from, if you contact ring support, you get transferred to their american hq. they replaced mine as the audio was defective - sent out a brand new one with a return paid postage bag to post back the faulty one.

      • Yes, it's the only way to keep recordings unfortunately. But ~$38AUD per year is pretty cheap.

      • +1

Only cloud recordings is the main thing holding me back. Looking for something that can record on my NAS.

  • How much is it normally?

    • $237 (RRP $299)

  • +1

Or you can order the pro for close to the price from Amazon

    I bought the Pro
(higher resolution, and custom zones etc..)

    • $265 AUD at the moment from amazon + a few bucks shipping

      • +4

Interesting how Amazon has tightened up shipping ring products to Australia. Probably local distributors putting pressure on them to stop treasure island gettting decent prices.

        • or perhaps they're planning on selling them here themselves shortly for more ;)

Just like every international retailer when they get to Australia. Hype train says "finally, we'll be gettin dem usa prices" and then they open up - oh whoops, we're the same price as everyone else with all these brands you don't recognise… 6 months later, half of them are gone again.

  • You will need additional Ring Chime Doorbell Chime to lets you know if someone’s at the door without your smartphone or tablet nearby.

but …but you will miss knock knock jokes

  • When I picked up my xiaomi camera I was hoping to use it in a similar way to this, has anyone tried? Seems t have a lot of the same features for 30 bucks.

    • +1

You could. So long as you tell them to look up at the camera.

I still don't understand why people could spend this much on a doorbell.

      • Actually where I am there's an old recessed intercom with a speaker grill which I was going to gut and put the camera behind

        • That might work. Were you going to rely on motion sensor to activate? Or do you have a xiaomi gateway & button to trigger it?

The motion sensors are often activated by insects, so this could be annoying.

        • @supabrudda: yeah I was going to rely in the motion sensor, and yes when I set it up last I noted moths being able to activate it. I don't have a button but they are pretty cheap I guess, I do have the gateway but haven't set it up properly yet, thanks to not know ing Chinese and not spending the required time to learn how to do it

        • @Jackson: ah you don't need chinese. The Mi home app from play store is in englisg. You just add device, press the pairing button on the gateway & it finds it. Same thing with the sensors.

          It's this easy

          http://blog.alansoon.com/technology-gadget-software/highly-c…

  • Can't someone just come and rip it off the wall? Serious question as I've been looking to get an intercom and this got me intrigued.

    • +2

They will replace the unit of stolen (police report required). It's fixed to the mounting plate with 2 small torx screws (star head).

      • hmm interesting, guessing you cant get it to record to local storage right? Only cloud option available? Gotta look up night footage too, the youtubes I've seen so far are just of people installing.

  • +2

I purchased this instead as i didn't want to get locked into their cloud sub

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/HD-Wi-Fi-Doorbell-Camera-720…

    • Can this upload to different cloud sources or just to local micro SD card?
Does the battery really last that long?

      • The upload is only to the Ring cloud service. So far I have found the site to be very responsive and you can download from there.
I have not found the battery life to last the 6 months as advertised (more like 2 - 3 depending on how often is activated), but taking it down to charge is not a chore. I also don't like letting it get bellow 30%.

      • Hi mate
Good questions, I've only purchased recently and haven't received as yet to test
I'm HOPING it supports ONVIF or similar protocol to record locally, if you're able to wait I'll post a quick review when I try it out
Battery life is supposedly 8 months however I was going to drill a port hole through the door as the charging port is on the back and I'll recharge it using a powerbank

      • Looks to be local storage so if the thefts steal the unit as well there goes the footage

        • No local storage at all (except any buffer). All the storage is on the ring cloud servers.

        • @sparhawk: I mean the cheap alixpress one

    • Would you mind updating us with a short review when you get it/ use it?

      • Same here. Had looked briefly at this aliexpress one and was not sure about the lack of separate bell for inside the house…..

I almost got one a while back, but found a number of complaints about video quality, most that could be blamed on network speed. Seems it needs a minimum of 1Mbps upload speed (https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us/articles/205348254-Poor-Co…) which is basically the best my Optus cable hits. Even when home, video from the doorbell goes out to the internet and then back to the mobile which sounds nuts….. Would be interested to hear if anyone with slower upload speeds here are happy with it…

    • I'm on telstra cable now but the had iiNet adsl before. It was really good still although much better now that I have the 30down.

      • Thanks for the info…. I don't think download speed is the issue though - on my connection it is restricted to 1 Mbps upload so it could struggle….

Have been really happy with my ring doorbell. I purchased mine on eBay in a special pack that included the additional chime and 1 year of cloud recording for $220 delivered. Another great features include awesome support from the US. I recently had a network issue and RING helped schedule a call that suited my time zone and talked me through the issue for an hour! Network speed is very important. I had fixed wireless broadband @25mbps down and 5mbps up and still had lag issues when speaking with the person at the doorbell sometimes. I have found that if you answer it as soon as you get the notification, you can speak to the person, even with lag so long as they haven't already walked away! They also offer a replacement warranty if it is stolen. I think you have to obtain a police report which would probably entail handing them the video footage of the criminal stealing the camera anyway!

  • CNET does warn this is hacked if that is a concern https://www.cnet.com/au/news/rings-smart-doorbell-can-leave-… still tempting and it may have been fixed.
Harvey Norman B&E has 25% cash rewards cash back on this. Can anyone get that as that would make it effectively only $177.75?

    • It is "Save Up to 25.00%", In fine print it states "Savings are automatically applied to products as listed. This is not a cashback offer." I tried to add it to cart but no further saving just free shipping

  • Am guessing this needs hard wiring to install instead of a battery system?

    • Nope.

Works on battery. Charged via USB. Usually lasts 3minths or so, depending on usage.

      • That's perfect. Thanks.

    • Pro is hardwired

  • +1

Got one from last Black Friday for $180 and a free Chime Pro. Very happy with it considering I paid about $160 for one of these local-wireless intercom from ebay back in 2013. To my surprising caught my local postie actually rang my doorbell to attempt delivery while I was out (although I could not convince him to just leave my parcel at the door over the app). Even have it to flash my LIFX bulb when pressed vis IFTTT.

  • Has anyone used similar ring type device called "Digoo SB-XYZ"?

    • Seen that and looks interesting - cloud storage appears to be free (10 seconds of video after each ring - don't know how long it keeps them for) and uses four AA batteries. Cheap as well (AUD$54 from BangGood at the moment). No inside doorbell though so would need to put an old mobile on the wall or similar….. Price has dropped recently as a new model (DG-XYA) is due to be released in a couple of months that has better batteries and probably other improvements so I'm waiting to see what that is like.

      • "…our next generation smart bell DG-XYA is coming, will release before AUG. This time, our goal is the brand "ring".
New design with super large 18650 battery, support work in both wired/wireless way, with PIR sensor and alarm function, 5s respone time, indoor unit work together…Wanna know more about newest video doorbell ? Please find us @digoo at facebook :)
Join more activities at forum of mydigoo.com, we provide 50% coupon for newest important home electronics for digoo fans/reviewer to test&play before official publish."

      • Ah - it doesn't save to the cloud, but rather comes with 8Gb of internal storage (apparently supports up to 16GB) that the doorbell saves the video to. There is mention of "Loop stored on cloud server" which I suspect means maybe the most recent video(s) get saved there temporarily. For those who might be interested, it appears that once the doorbell is setup it is locked to your account - if you want to give it to someone else, you need to unlock it. This means if someone steals it, they can only use it as a door stop, rather than a door bell.

So what I'd like in the next version:
        * Support (or ideally included) for an internal chime
        * Longer battery life
        * Support for hard wired power
        * Slightly thinner design
        * Support for 1080p - with option to reduce this if people have speed/bandwidth issues
        * Support for larger memory cards and/or ability to upload (eg ftp) to a server of your choice

From searching through their facebook site, looks like maybe the first three wish list items at least may be included with the new version.

  • Thanks bought one from OW. Tried bunnings as well, they were happy to price match but not to beat it by 10% as it's special order.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Bought one from HN. Bunnings took a long time to check out the price reduction so I told them to forget it.

  • +1

Bunnings have reduced to $236 to match this.

    • ..with 5% price beat from officeworks, sweet.

  • +3

Thanks OP, bought from HN, added a couple of other items on special to sneak it over $350 Amex deal, and have received the $50 cashback already.

Product is great so far, already had a couple of chances to answer the door while not home. Minor annoyances have been outweighed by the big advantages, but include:
    * Drill bit that comes with it is not for brick. Apart from that, unit installation is a breeze with parts included.
    * Setup of device connection worked OK 2nd time, but I'm not sure why it didn't work first time, and the troubleshooting didn't help either
    * Lag when trying to converse is a little annoying (wifi or remotely), though I'm getting decent video/audio quality
    * 2nd account (wife) was added, but creating an account from the link didn't work properly. Had to reset the password to get it working
    * 2nd phone then automatically picked up the device automatically and could view log/footage, but wouldn't ring. Fiddled around for a bit, and it started working, but still not sure what eventually got it working.
