    Nice one. Thanks

  • +15

Thanks Tightarse, I've told all my family and friends about how tight you are.

  • +4

WOW. I literally bought a huge giftcard last night thinking nothing like this will happen. Sad day. I might as well stock up then. Thanks TA

    • +5

same, I remember thinking as I purchased it that a 7% discount has to be due soon…I can live with missing the extra 0.55%

    • I agree - buy more, and dollar cost average!
Hopefully the resellers of gift cards will boost their deals too :))

      • What resellers? :P

        • Zip ;)

  • +16

Equates to an extra $0.55 saving per $100. It all helps - thanks TA.

I've heard that some people spend thousands of dollars (some tens of thousands) on these when the discount increases. I just don't understand that. Sure you save a little more money, but you've then tied up all your money in these. Eg, if you have an offset account with a loan, if you don't spend your eGift card within about 2 months (or add up to another month if you pay with credit card at the beginning of the card cycle so have up to an extra month to pay that back), you are better off leaving money sitting in your offset account and just buying a eGift card at 5% off when you need it. If you aren't spending it until 6mths later whats the point?

    • +1

Hey Syba, that is one side of the logic. Here is another perspective (e.g. some people have different ways of doing things): We have a motorcycle (for commuting) and a car (for work) in household, 2 pre-paid mobiles and minimal Woolworth shopping (at least once a week they do have real specials for non perishable items).
So here it is. We buy at least $30 worth of items from Woolies a week - gives us plain 5ish% off and 4c per litre discount on petrol. At the end of the week I buy bulk fuel at Woolworth/Caltex station and add $30 recharge for mobiles. That gives me 5ish% discount on recharges, extra 4c discount per litre of fuel which in combination with supermarket discount bumps to 8ish%. Now, I don't think any offset account will give you back as much as what I mentioned above (mind you bulk fuel purchase we are talking about 100+ litres a week which comes at handy 13% + discount). On top of that most of the saving accounts will be reported at the end of the year for tax purposes… etc. There is more to it, but I hope you can see now that everyone is different and there are ways for decent savings with those cards.

      • +12

No one is doubting the benefit/ value in the base 5% off.

I think what Syba is getting at is that the extra discount (ie the 0.55%) is not sufficient to compensate for the loss of interest when people stock up on these & end up taking months & months to use them up.

        • +1

          Fair enough :-)

        • +1

By my calculations it will take 50 days for a 100% offset account @ 4% interest to "save" 0.55%.

          Food for thought.

        • +1

@eclaw: What account has 4% interest? Heard those words from a thread away and came right over.

        • +4

          @pifts:

Offset account - so it's interest saved on the linked home loan (rather than actually interest earned)

      • -1

You get all those discounts when you purchase Gift Cards from Cashrewards or other retailers at 5% discount as well. It is additional .5% discount Syba was asking about you can save putting in your offset account saving over 4%.

      • +1

Also, if you're paying with a Credit Card, you save up to extra 55 days of offset interest. And if you're on promotional 0% credit card rate on purchases, it can further be extended.

    • +1

Obviously some people use it to rack up their points or min spend for CC. Would definitely make more sense to have savings in an offset if that was the case.

      • +1

rack up their points or min spend for CC.

Min spend is a good one.
It effectively spreads out your "spend XYZ amount in 3 months" to over a year at woolies.
You can do opal recharges, fill up fuel, groceries, milk, avocados.. so you can smash them yourself..
        Living in Sydney is expensive!

        • +4

Love the Opal recharged on Woolies GCs. It saves me 1 trip per 20 (which although sounds like nothing, it definitely builds up over time).

    • +5

And then there are people who don't have an offset account and compare against savings sitting in the bank. With 3% about the best they can hope for, which might come to less than 2% after tax the calculation is quite different.

But yeah, the extra 0.55% don't make me jump up and down in joy. But the extra 5% (when Big-W was selling the physical cards at 10% discount) were a very nice bonus.

      • +1

Actually if you're making 3% p.a. your monthly interest rate is approx 0.25%.

        • +1

Taking this example further, 0.25% per month is 0.175% after tax if your marginal tax rate is 30% (ok, not really a possible personal tax rate but just using it to make the maths easier).

          0.55% is approximately 3 times 0.175%.

Assuming your spending is even over any given period, it means you'll come out approximately the same if you buy 6- month worth of egift card @ 5.55% off vs if you buy them at 5% off as you need them.

But, of cos, we're not looking to come out square (otherwise, what's the point of doing it). To come out ahead, you've gotta buy less than the breakeven qty.

Personally, using this example, I'd probably aim to stock up about 2-4 months worth or so.

PS. Before anyone points it out, yes, I've ignored any compounding of interest because life is already complicated enough.

      • Let's not forget the time value of money and that inflation is 2.1%.
So you're really getting a ~0.9% return by waiting a year for your money to mature in a TD

        • Don't forget that if you actually run out of eGift cards you lose 5% outright of your spend! So if you stock up on 5.55% just a few months in advance you're probably safe and the totals aren't really worth worrying about unless you need to spend the money elsewhere!

    • of course if you just have the money sitting in the bank & getting 2-3% it might be worth it. it's take me about 5mths to lose the amount of interest (which is then taxed) saved by the extra .25%

we chew through at least $500/mth, so I used @POTM and get 7% off. that saves me an extra $10/mth over usual CR, which = free Dan members 6pack. liquid assets are important.

      • What's POTM?

        • +3

an ozbargainer who was selling wish cards for 7% via the classifieds.. now he does it via pm only.

        • @wreckedandjealous:
Yup - just bought some from him yesterday like I've done in the past. Fast in responding and giftcard sent directly to you too.

        • @wreckedandjealous:

I see. Thanks for the explanation. I'm better off just buying via CR with my AMEX Plat Edge card.

  • +4

Dang. Just bought one last night.

Ah well, it's never a huge difference. If it was 10% off I'd be foaming at the mouth, ha.

  • Can we buy vouchers such as of JB HIFI from Woolworths store and pay from these vouchers to get 5% off on those vouchers?

    • +2

You can but there are others selling them at better rates.

      • +1

You can but JB HIFI was just an example. Woolies have a range of vouchers available from all different vendors and of course, if time is your enemy, one can always fetch one immediately.

        • +1

Be aware some of them don't activate instantly. I know a lot of them say 24 hours but activate instant anyway, but I've had some that actually take longer (Sportsgirl, as an example).

        • @illumination:

Great to know all this. Especially when planning to buy a lot of stuff for new home. Any idea if something can be saved for Ikea? Do woolies sell their vouchers or something else?

        • +1

@ashftc: Ikea.. nope, nothing in mind.

Only thing I would say is:

          • Join the IKEA Family Club for the odd "member" discount
          • Pay with a Credit Card to earn some points on your purchase - I believe they do not accept AMEX

          Oh and

          • If you know anyone who works there, get them to buy the item for you. I know they get some sort of discount.
        • @illumination:

Awesome. Thanks for your response mate.

        • @illumination:

If you mean in store, I don't think they take AMEX from memory (at Rhodes & Marsden Park NSW). I faintly remember being disappointed in not being able to get all the points for that expensive trip through the maze

        • @illumination: Yes I had some JB Hifi cards that literally took 24 hours to activate. I went to the JB shop with them and embarassed myself, while e-giftcards are generally activated instantly.

      • +1

Any examples? Thinking of getting some new headphones so would be keen for any JB Hifi gift cards on the cheap.

    • +1

Check if your employer or health insurance etc offers any discount scheme. My one (MyDiscounts) offers 7.5% on JB and was up to 9% this week as a special.

    • Yep. Did so today to get a cheaper preorder at JB.

Otherwise I regularly do so with EB cards.

  • +2

With plat edge this is great!!!

  • +1

now it only costs 7c to buy visa/eftpos cards instead of 65c, Thanks!

  • thanks TA!
btw, anyone could please tell me the difference between a Co-branded & Woolworths Owned Caltex?

    • -2

forget abt their petrol, fill up with BP is a better choice.

      • Why?

        • -2

BP has slicker marketing for the same product. 91 and diesel are identical, and there may be a marginal difference in the 98 octane product.

        • Not quite sure, my friend who is machinist strongly recommend me this… And u can always see some cabs there. Who knows petrol performance better than a taxi driver?

        • +5

@magifico: If I wanted an expert opinion on petrol I would ask a scientist in the field, an engineer working in the fuel industry, or an independent tester like Choice. I wouldn't ask a taxi driver.

Maybe we should ask BP for their expert opinion.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGqKuV30kVw

Apparently cars not using BP fuel are dragged down by huge pink boat anchors. BP's fuel sends a thousand ravenous piranhas down your fuel lines to eat all the filthy dirt. Breathing fuel fumes makes you hallucinate and see talking green orbs.

        • @Cluster: Erm…It gonna be a long story to tell which petrol is better…

        • @magifico: cab drivers rarely own their vehicles, they always go for the cheapest place to fuel up. or the closest to where the exchange base is located.

      • With Amex spend $40 get $10 back.

  • ahhhh, just bought $1000 last night

    • And I just bought 400 the other day because I havnt seen it get bumped in awhile I've been relying on these more and more, don't have money for food but I've got a egift card to feed me during the poor weeks

      • Wouldn't it be better to buy just enough for a weekly spend? Since it is an on going special.

        • Yes don't see any value in buying more than you need.

  • I never buy anything based on cashrewards offer because it takes long time to get refund and it requires minimum amount in order to transfer it back to your bank account. In stead of using Entertainment book, I can get the real cash for 5% instanly.

Cashreward is just for additional bonus.

    • +3

But you have to pay $60 for the entertainment book yearly, cash rewards is a free service.

      • And entertainment book has a tiny selection in comparison and doesn't offer sitewide cashback.

      • +1

yeah agree but people buy Enterntainment Book not just for this Woolies thing, 1-2 meals in restaurants will help you out that 60$ already. I thought you only can get real cash back transfered to your bank account for a block of 30$ ? Dont get me wrong, I used cashback for all purchased like ebay, groupon, hotels, etc …

    • +6

Dude… this is 5.55% instantly as well!

      Bought $5000 cost me $4722.50.

      lol rekt

    • Same as the Woolies deal, the 5% of is instant I.e. pay 475 for 500

    • Cashreward is just for additional bonus.

Exactly. It's not a substitute for Entertainment Book - they offer different things (besides the Woolies Gift Cards).

  • Can you use the egift cards to pay Woolworths insurance?

    • alas no :-(

  • What happened to the user that used to give 7% off wish cards? Can anyone let me know why the post was removed?

    • ptom

      • Yeah. His posts were removed. Do you know why?

        • XX

        • Summary: We are not allowed to advertise/sell them anymore. Considered to be "running a side business"

        • @Clear: Was legit looking for this post a couple of days ago and couldn't find it. Cheers :)

        • @illumination: What if I just wanted to send a private message, to help a mate get some points I don't get anyway?

        • @pifts: I'm personally fine with that and have still been doing it via this method for those that were aware of me doing this.

        • +1

@illumination: I can vouch for illumination if you want to purchase egiftcards at 7%

      • +6

        Trud 😋

        • +1

          !!!ih

    • Side note with the 7%:

If you have a CBA diamond card you are effectively getting 6.424% off if you pay with amex and redeem supermarket gift cards, plus interest made during the interest free period.

Unfortunately CBA is reducing the earn rate for amex on 1/7 so this won't work as well anymore.

      • +2

But if you were just using your credit card in the shops you would still be getting this extra 1.x% back anyway. So you are still only saving an extra 5% by getting the eGift cards.

        • True, didn't think of it that way :P

  • +1

If like me your convenient local Caltex is a co-branded store that doesn't accept eGift Cards then you can just buy the Woolworths Petrol Gift Cards from Woolworths using eGift Cards. Annoying but saves on the delivery fee to get physical gift cards through Cash Rewards.

    • -1

      Not sure that's allowed.

    • +2

      Why buy petrol gift cards?
Buy WISH cards instore and pay with egift :)
Don't lock yourself into just being able to pay for petrol :P

      • +1

That makes more sense again, though I've only ever had an issue with needing physical cards at Caltex. I hate the physical cards because they're painful to enter for tracking in the Woolworths Money app. Now that you can import into the app directly from the eGift Card email it's very convenient.

        • +1

For me, there's only two reasons for using a WISH card over eGift.
          - Parents prefer a card rather than an app
          - Accepted at ALL caltex stations that also accept **4c vouchers, since some do not accept egift.

  • +1

Anyone know if the egift card site will count as a double/triple points when the credit card/amex points changes happen next month or will it go to 1 or less?

    • +1

That shouldn't change the merchant type..? That's purely down to the merchant type.

      • What type of merchant is the egift site classified as though? Since it is Woolworths, will it be under the supermarket merchant and still have full AMEX points or will it be classified as other merchants which have their points reduced?

        • +1

Direct issued Amex treats it as supermarket spend.
Different organisations might treat it differently. Which one are you referring to with reducing in points? Quite a few a changing but direct issued Amex cards are mostly staying the same.

        • +1

To answer your question, the egift site is Everydayrewards.com.au and the transaction is tagged as a Supermarket transaction.

I think I know what you mean by "full AMEX points" - but the only places I can think of that do not do "full AMEX points" are government bodies (e.g. ATO, RMS).
Some AMEX cards (Platinum Edge & DJs Platinum?) give supermarket bonus points - which these transactions qualify for.

        • +1

          @illumination: The website is everydaygiftcards.com.au,not everydayrewards.com.au.

        • @Neoika: Oh yes whoops my bad. Makes a lot of sense. Everyday Rewards isn't even a thing anymore haha

        • @potm:
          @illumination:
Thanks. I should have specified bank issued Amex cards, specifically CBA since from July 1, only supermarkets, department stores and petrol stations in Australia & overseas transactions get the current 3 points for Diamond cards. All other transactions only get 0.5 pts so would be better using a different card if it isnt a supermarket transaction.
Wanted to know whether to stock up a little extra on egift cards for more points.

  • +1

I was patiently waiting for one of these deals. Thanks TA!

  • Ordered 09:26AM, Got egift Cards at 11:00AM

    Woolies is super fast!

  • +3

I've been using eGift cards for about 2 years now and love it. That extra 5% off adds up to several hundred dollars saved per year for me.

But, I have only ever seen one other person ever use them at Woolworths/Caltex/Big/Dan/etc, and I don't live in an affluent suburb. How many people here see other savvy shoppers getting the discount?

I mentioned eGift cards to two of my good friends, who are struggling a bit with money, and both weren't impressed at all with 5% off. For them it wasn't worth bothering with.

    • +6

I work in the checkouts at Woolworths, probably only 1 out of every 100 people use an egift card. Too much hassle for some, but I think they're great.
