I have personally never seen anyone else using eGift Cards, ever. Although at Woolies I often use self checkout so I don't really get the opportunity to see what payment methods others are using.

I mentioned eGift cards to two of my good friends, who are struggling a bit with money, and both weren't impressed at all with 5% off. For them it wasn't worth bothering with.

See, I don't get this. Nothing against your friends but these are precisely the type of people that should be using stuff like eGift Cards. If those who are struggling with money want to struggle less, they have to make some change otherwise they'll keep struggling. I'm not saying them doing this will suddenly pull them out of their struggles, but it'll be better than changing nothing.

I also find it irrational that people bother with chasing high interest savings accounts but don't bother with stuff like this because it's "too much hassle".

In my opinion, it's not even much "hassle" (although maybe I'm a bit biased?). If anything, it's a change in habit but not "hassle"

      • +8

Maybe the "can't be bothered" mentality is why they become "struggling with money" in the first place?

I know people who just want to bank with the same bank that they've opened their first account with (generally a big 4) & can't even be bothered with high interest saving accounts.

        • Fair point.

Yep, I've also tried to convince people to change bank accounts because they're not getting the best deal and they don't care.

It is actually incredibly interesting seeing the differences in mentality..

      • +3

I find that anyone who is financially challenged lack the ability to rationally see the value of saving a dollar a day keeps the debt collector at bay.

I spend about $120 on public transport a month on concession, so that is $6 a month with little to no effort. I always recharge during my lunch break at my nearby Woolies. It's different, but not a hassle.

And everyone I know I have advertised to them the beauty of not staying with their current bank, either their super low savings rates or some other fees they get, and they just brush my suggestions off.

I feel that financial literacy is something that needs to be taught at school.

        • It's different, but not a hassle.

Exactly what I mean. Some things, I accept, we Ozbargainers potentially are irrational about - as someone above pointed out, stocking up on 6 months on eGift Cards with an additional 0.55% discount probably isn't worth it.

But certain things, such as simply using these discounted eGift Cards to top up your Opal card and petrol are great ways to save money in a really easy way.

The Woolies Money app also makes the whole process much easier. At least you have an app that tracks balances for you, unlike Coles eGift Cards!

      • +1

True. An old saying from before you were born :)
'take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves'

    • +5

I've mentioned the eGift cards to countless family and friends but none have expressed any real interest in them which really bewilders me.

It's such an easy decision for me, and so simple especially with the Woolworths Money app on my phone:

We spend $500 per fortnight on Fuel and Groceries consistently (2 adults, 2 children, 2 dogs)

I buy 1 x $500 eGift card per fortnight at a cost of $475 (saving $25). I buy it with my Amex Platinum Edge and earn at a rate of 3 points to $1 spent, so end up with 1425 points every fortnight also, which roughly equates to $10 points balance.

This means I save/earn points valued at $35 every fortnight for simply jumping onto Cashrewards and spending one minute buying this. It takes no longer to use the eGift card at the checkouts than it would using cash or a card. It also means that over the course of a year I save/earn points valued at $910 for this simple decision.

      • +2

Same here. It seems like I'm the only one who can be bothered.

However, your saving per fortnight is really only about $25 because you would have used you're plat edge card in store if you hadn't got any egift card & would have earned the 3x points anyway

        • +4

I've done the same thing mentioning it to friends and family and have seen exactly the same reaction.

One friend who will spend a week driving around trying to find second hand tyres with the best tread on them for the best price, rather than just sucking it up, buying new tyres and not having to replace them every three months scoffed at how insignificant 5% is for the money saved. So far this year we've saved $290 via 5% discounts on our groceries and petrol, and an extra $200 via woolworths online codes, 4c off petrol vouchers etc. That's $500 without even trying, plus another $600 through flybuys and WWR (which he also thinks is too insignificant to really bother about), it may not look like much, but each bit adds up.

        • +1

@SternFern: A classic case of penny wise pound foolish

      • +2

It takes no longer to use the eGift card at the checkouts than it would using cash or a card

Disagree with you there - it does take longer than tap and pay, as you have to manually enter in the gift card number and pin. Worse if your shopping goes over two gift cards, you've got to do it twice. If i've only done a small value shop, i have to talk myself into using the gift card, "ah dammit it's saving 25 cents - ok!"

Wish they had like Coles, where you can scan the barcode on the gift card.

        • +1

@danyool, agreed, it would be so much easier if the WW app (or Android Pay, which does work for the WW rewards card barcode) could be scanned/swiped to pay.

    • +5

We are a special lot here at ozbargains. I've told numerous friends and colleagues that I would give them a 7% on the discount and they still can't be bothered. That's a 7% saving on the hundreds they spend each month at woollies stores.
Meanwhile on ozbargain, people who don't know me at all are willing to transact with me to save a little bit extra because they are already aware of how to get discounts themselves.

      • +2

I have tried the same, including offering the additional discount.

People at work think I'm crazy and I definitely have a reputation (which I am fine with). I even tried telling a colleague that you could top up petrol AND save on your groceries - and she spends >$100/wk on groceries specifically at Woolies and gets petrol at Caltex/Woolworths. Her response?

I know it's probably worthwhile and will probably add up, but I just can't be bothered.

These guys just don't give a damn!

Friends - I have managed to convince half of them. That's worked reasonably well? I guess I hang out with tightasses.

    • +1

Unfortunately many people just can't be helped. Lots of people don't understand the concept of a small saving repeated frequently equalling big savings. I've wasted time trying to convert people to e-gift cards too with zero success.

I've also never seen anyone else use an e-gift voucher although I think it's understandable since up until about a year ago it wasn't uncommon for the checkout operators themselves to not know what an e-gift card was.

Conversation I've had many times (although not anymore, thankfully):

Me: I'd like to pay with an e-gift card?
      Them: A gift card?
      Me: No, an e-gift card.
      Them: Um.
Me: It's electronic. I just have to enter a number and a PIN, no card.
      Them: Um.
Me: Press payment options and there will be an option for e-gift card…
      Them: Ah, OK.

Now i just have this one though:

Me: I'd like to pay the full amount with an e-gift card [grocery shop of say $150 or more]
      Them: The full amount?
      Me: Yes, all of it.
Them: All of it on the e-gift card?
      Me: Yes
Them: [look uncertain, expecting it to fail]

I don't think all of the checkout operators realise some of us buy $500 e-gift cards as a matter of course and are in the mindset of thinking everyone is using a $20 voucher from gran.

      • +1

Speaking from the perspective of a checkout operator, theres also a lot of people who come through with a gift card worth $20 and try to pay for $100 worth of shopping and then being surprised it didn't go through. So I personally like to double check to make it go through the first time.

  • How long takes? is there difference in time takes to get $100 eGift Card as to a $500 one?
edit - just saw turds comment, but how much $

    • +1

It usually takes maybe 5 to 6 hours to get the email, regardless of size.

      • From my personal experience, it usually takes 2-3 hours.

Also the size of the gift card has no bearing on how long it takes.

What do you mean by how much $? It's 5.55% off the face value of the gift card.

      • If it's on a card you've used before it's normally quick. If not, I find it takes longer (and one time they called me up to verify).

        • If it's on a card you've used before it's normally quick. If not, I find it takes longer (and one time they called me up to verify).

I think it's got to do with if you're a new customer or not, not the card itself.

My friend and I both used NAB visa cards, after teaching them to eGift.
The first time they used it took just under 24 hrs from payment to delivery.
When I did it with the exact same type of card (but never used yet), it took 2 hours only, but I've used Woolworths portal via CR for a long time now.

    • This is my 3rd time buying the egift card.I always buy $500 ,on last two times it has taken just under 48 hours for me to receive them .Hopefully it will be less this time.

      • +1

For me cash rewards always takes around a day or so while purchasing through entertainment book only takes 2 hours usually. There's reports from some people who receive it very fast and others which takes longer. No idea what's causing the differences though.

        • Well it looks like 3rd times a charm for me .Ordered at 11.15am received at 2pm.

        • +1

@Triple J: Thanks, good to know, they might have fixed the delays.

        • @potm: Seems like cash rewards is just as fast as EB now. A couple of orders got delayed yesterday, although not specific to CR, one from EB got delayed as well.

  • Can/do people buy a Woolies gift card (phyisical gift card) with the eGift card?

Having to key in all those numbers every time I checkout seems like it would be an annoyance.

    • Use the app.
Or exchange it for a physical card.

    • +1

Can/do people buy a Woolies gift card (phyisical gift card) with the eGift card?

      Yes.
You need to go into a Woolworths store and "buy" a WISH card.
It can be easily done at a checkout, or even self-serve, but for self-serve the assistant there needs to key in total amount you want to buy since the WISH cards are custom value.

I do this all the time at self-serve to combine all my residual egift cards.

      • +3

For the residual amounts, you can just use them as part payment when you shop (ie using more than 1 card to pay for a shop)

  • +1

How do I know a petrol station is Co-branded or Woolworths owned?

  • +2

As most wise people here have said, saving money is all about developing the habit. Buying gift cards, pricematching, and clicking through cashback websites all seem to be troublesome at the beginning but once you get used to doing them, they just become automatic. For example, when I buy household battery packs, I always look up Bunnings website and pricematch Bunnings, which is usually an instant saving of over $1. Also, when Masters was around, Bunnings sells 3M products 1c cheaper than Masters, and you instantly save 10% on 3M products through pricebeat policy.

  • Can Woolworths eGift Cards be used to buy PlayStation Plus membership cards from Big W? They are 30% off beginning tomorrow.

    • yes

  • Aah, a nice conniving 5.55%. Are there any 5% off Coles giftcards available without membership etc?

    • Interested in that as well. Also would like to know where to get JetStar 10% without membership.

  • +1

would have jumped all over this deal if I didn't stock about $1500 woollies egift cards with prezzee deal with 10% bonus

  • +4

I buy my WISH cards with a Coles credit card, which gives me additional FlyBuy points …

    • +1

I'm surprised your transaction doesn't get declined :P

  • Any idea if this other gift card site also gives triple points on Plat Edge?
    http://www.woolworthsgiftcardstore.com.au/deal/default

    • +1

      Website looks a little shady.

Also had a quick look at their Woolies gift cards. They are not discounted at all.

In addition, at the bottom of the payment page it says the following:

The charge on your credit card will appear as GIFTCARD SVC BLACKHAWKMILSONS POINT

So I'd imagine no triple points.

      • Blackhawk did the 15% off gift cards in December, they handle the gift cards for rebel and supercheap auto. If they made the above website then it's legit. Most likely no triple points though.

On the contrary, everyone who bought through the eBay deal had their ccs think the transaction was a cash advance or something stupid, you get charged a small fee :/

        I would avoid it.

        • +1

          Yep I recognise Blackhawk.

What's stopping someone from simply making that their business name for the purpose of a transaction though?

It does say "Powered by the Blackhawk Network" down the bottom though, which links to https://blackhawknetwork.com/.. and this website actually doesn't look like the Blackhawk we're expecting.

@cwongtech: Thanks for the sleuthing work =)

  • Found it strange to see Myer gift cards being sold at my Woolies today. Lost a bet with someone that it would be stocked.

  • OMG, I've got no more credit limit on my amex and they won't allow me to make a manual payment as one is still processing from yesterday! Does this deal expire tomorrow midnight?

    • Bpay the card or call AMEX and they will put a manual payment through for you

      • can't put through an additional manual payment within 72 hours and BPAY prob won't clear my balance in time? I am just going to try the transaction and if it fails I'll get in touch with the credit team for an overlimit exception (this is what amex advised)

        • Alternatively, you can pay via a supplementary card. Although I think the bank account you pay from may have to be in the same name as the supplementary cardholder too (don't quote me on this).

        • +1

@illumination: Doesn't have to be the same name. Just ask for them to process it through the sup card. You can still use your bank account.

        • @potm: Interesting trick, so as main cardholder I call up and ask them to process the payment through my supp card? Anyway, the transaction went through fine and I'm now proudly $2000 over my credit limit.

        • +1

@marquise: Yep, just have the 4 digit number on the front of the supp card ready to give them.

  • Never tried this before but very tempted as so many ozbargainers recommend it and I also have a AMEX plat edge card. However would a better option to save money be to pour fuel at cheaper local fuel stations + shop at ALDI instead of Woolworths?

    • +3

For many items, it's actually cheaper to buy from Woolworths when they're on special than from Aldi

  • Really interesting comments here about the perceived insignificant savings from egiftcards. It has become a habit now and since oct 2016 I've saved nearly $200.
Thats $200 i wouldnt have had in my acct.thank you!

  • +1

I find that people who scoff at the "miniscule" savings are either stinking rich or have no financial discipline. ie the people that have credit card balances every month and would hire a dvd and return it 3 days too late and get a $10 penalty, and cant be bothered remembering to return it

This is the way I think
I spend $70 per on fuel, woolworths is the same price and the cheapest out of all the other petrol stations, so im going to spend the lowest price of $1.30 per lite for example,

use 5% gift cards, that reduces my fuel down by 6.5c per litre, add the 4c per litre voucher its 10.5c per litre
ie $5.60 odd per week I save by using 4c and 5% off,
    $5.60 is $291 per year

for $291 I could go to a star restaurant for 1 person twice or a couple, FREE MEAL,

add in my groceries, and alcohol I purchase from dan muprhys

and this total hits $1,000 very easily
have larger expenses?????? then youd hit $2000 per year savings very easily

$2000 can get you a return trip to asia for 10 days including airfares, accomodation and food.

so if by buying these 5% off cards, essentially I can get a free (sort of) international trip just by adjusting my spending habits!!!
I wont say no to a free holiday!

    • no financial discipline

Perfect way to describe it. I have friends who say yes to the 50c surcharge at the coffee shop because of going under their $10 minimum EFTPOS threshold. Say they drink twice a week, that's $100 in a year easy.

    • This is already mentioned in the OP. But I'm trying to get this offer extended.

      • +2

OP states 9th, site states 10th.

        • Nice spotting, thanks now corrected. As I said, the offer may be extended. Will know more later. Have a great day.

Anyone here experiencing delays in receiving their egift card? Bought $300 yesterday at 2:00pm awst but still havent received, normally when ive purchased in the past i get them within 3 hours…

    • There was a small period yesterday around that time where orders got delayed. I have a couple still outstanding while orders I've made after have gone through. Called them up and they said they are working on it. Can't really do much more except to wait.

      • Cool, thanks for the reply

    • potm is definitely the person to ask, given the volume he processes haha!

    • I ordered $5k, $5k, $1k, $2k, $5k

all came in two hours except teh $1k, that still hasnt arrived after 36 hours!

  • +1

Hmmm… 22 hours and counting and I still haven't received my egiftcard. I made two other separate orders and got those within 3 hours.

    • Finally got it. Took around 28 hours.

  • same to me, I ordered at 4pm yesterday, still haven't received invoice & egiftcard.
when you received the tax invoice, the giftcard will be arrived shortly, this happened every time I bought it.

  • Haven't got mine yet either.. Fingers crossed there's no cockup.

  • +5

All, please note this offer has now been extended to 11:59PM AEST Sunday, June 11.

  • +3

Seems like a few others have had problems with delayed orders from yesterday. I'll just add that the issue is with woolworths and not specific to cash rewards. I've got an order from entertainment book from yesterday still outstanding as well.

    • Thanks for the feedback :)

  • There was a batch created yesterday afternoon that have unfortunately encountered a processing error. I've called through and the customer service representative advised that they will be processed "shortly", but refused to provide any guidance further guidance on whether this may be within the next few hours or within a week. Pretty disappointing, but unfortunately not much I can do except cancel the order (which can take some time as well).

  • I'm getting an error message after processing my payment that says the order can't be processed right now…… is anyone else getting this?

NB trying to purchase two $500 cards

  • I just orders a $250 gift card. Paid by AMEX - as I've done several times in the past.

Transaction didn't go through - got an error message stating card could not be processed. Tried again and got the same error.

Checked my AMEX online account and I got charged $236.12 ($250 - 5.55%) twice. No emails received to acknowledge the transaction(s).

I just sent a message to Woolworths Money Prepaid Cards describing the problem, let's see what they come back with. Really weird as I I've done this dozens of times in the past and never had any issues. Anyone else having the same problem?

    • Yep same problem on my Amex, but didn't get eye billed at all.

      Hopefully they sort this out….

    • Update - my AMEX card was ultimately hit 3 times (!) for $236.12/each although I only tried to process the transaction twice.

No e-gift card emails / invoices were received, I'll call Woolworths Money after the long week-end to sort things out, worst case I'll ask AMEX to reverse the charges.

  • Just got invoice.. could be soon.

    • Got mine.

  • Any chance this could be permanently at 5.55% discount?

    • +1

Why not just buy it in advance?
You effectively have 23 months to use it at woolworths..
eGift have 12 months expiry, if you need longer than that, you can use it to buy WISH cards when the eGift are about to expire.
The new WISH cards also have 12 months expiry from the day you purchase it from.

      • -1

I buy as much as I can afford.. but it would be nice to have it available all the time

  • Get some 10% off Big W only cards! I shop there often!

  • Glad I held off - 6% off WISH through Reward Gateway

    • Can you give any more info plse?

      • Reward Gateway offer corporates the ability to get access to discount vouchers and cash back on purchases - it's like Cash Rewards on heat.

        • Do they allow amex? And are the cards getting 3x points on edge?

        • @Turd:

As I posted on the previous page, access to this type of site is an employer-provided benefit. You need a login and password. It's not available publicly like cashrewards.

This particular one also charges a fee for payment other than by debit card.

        • +1

@gadgetguy: So with the fee, it makes it not great right???

        • @Turd:

I pay with a debit card. Last week I was getting 10% off Myer egift cards so it is definitely worth it.

        • @gadgetguy: I don't get charged fees using credit card - they removed that about 9 months ago. You might want to try a CC again - VISA / Master no fees.

        • @singingwolf:

Yours must be a different site then. Just tried again:

"There will be a credit card fee of $1.43 (1.5%) on this card "

This is with a standard MasterCard.

        • @gadgetguy: Weird. Wonder why they would change based on employer.

  • Ordered 4 days ago, still havent received the eGift cards !!
On order status it says, "Order dispatched". I'm now wondering if they printed my eGift cards and are sending it in the mail ?

Can anyone look up their gift card and tell us a number to call them on. There is none on their website !

Edit: All sorted. Have them a call and they re-sent the email. Apparently it sent on the 23rd but I never got it !
Received the order confirmation and invoice same day, but not the cards itself ! All good now

    • No,it did not.I had the same problem with an order on 23rd.It was their system glitch not sending but marked as sent.

I contacted them through online form(down right corner of the website) and got it as "resend" in their word.
