Was this $10 previously? Wow…. Cheap!

  • Can you say that again?

  • Has anyone got one of these, does it work well?

    • +4

I bought it from Zapals and it works really really great but be aware my item got delivered after 2 and half months

I've got one. Really easy to set up and strong signal. Easily worth it.

Wifi Repeaters will halve your wireless performance. The better option is a wireless access point connected via an ethernet cable to your router / modem. If this is not possible, power over ethernet (PoE) will deliver the next best in performance. Only choose a WiFi repeater if this is your only option.

      • this is both wifi repeater and also have a wireless access point with new ssid mode

        • +2

It is using wireless to send data to the router and also using the same wireles network to send data from the repeater to the device:
Device <—> WiFi Repeater <—> Router
The WiFi repeater cannot send to both the device & router at the same time.

        • @mathew42: I just watched some YouTube videos to check this. The device has two antennas. It creates a new network that appears with a very similar name as the first network (an additional underscore + #). Both networks use the same wifi channel, which means some potential for interference, but because there are two antennas, it should be able to send and receive independently.

Not many good videos but this one shows quite a bit. https://youtu.be/YmcNHcCtlMQ and around 6:20 he shows the networks.

@twocsies: If the antennas share the same channel, then both antennas cannot send / transmit at the same time. You can see the same issue when two people talk at the same time. I suggest referring to Carrier-sense multiple access with collision avoidance for more details.

I'm not stating that it won't work and if you are streaming content from the internet then it will work just fine, because that will be the slow point. However if you are transferring data from a local device then expect performance to be impacted significantly.

Collisions and interference are the same reason that experts recommend installing multiple low powered wireless access points (WAP) over a single high powered WAP.

        • @mathew42: I do know that. I was clarifying because although you may have mischaracterised one aspect of the device, the overall implication was correct. This device will likely not operate at maximum 300 Mbps, but that's a theoretical figure anyway, so the question is, when would this device make any sense? Personally I would not add this device to my network, because I'd run extra cable and use a spare router lying around, but I do think in certain scenarios, it could make sense. This guy saw improvements.
          http://www.wovow.org/review-xiaomi-mi-wifi-300m-amplifier-2/

So ordinarily I'd say this the only situation where this $10 fix makes sense: you use Speedtest.net and normally have 40Mbps speed, but find in certain rooms, it goes down to 10Mbps. Add the device, tests will go up to around 20Mbps.

At NBN speeds, I think it will do better, because the data rate is guaranteed to be low. If you get something like 20Mbps speedtest from your router, but only 10Mbps in some distant room, then add the dongle halfway, and you might see the 20Mbps. Assuming that the problem is distance and not interference.

I'm not convinced it would handle 16 users, but it is a dirty and cheap fix that might help in very specific scenarios that can be described. Switching networks every time you move around in the house would be extremely annoying. And like you said, transferring data in the local network will be at the lower speeds.

Sorry for the lengthy reply but I'm not sure how to estimate it more succinctly. Please let me know if you think my maths or logic need improvement.

@twocsies: I think we are pretty much in agreement, especially when you consider that I wrote this in my first comment:

Only choose a WiFi repeater if this is your only option.

  • US$7.99? … AU$10.69 on the site?

    • thank you for correcting me. It's US$7.99, just changed the title.

  • I know this question is asking for a dumb answer but - is it any good? Is this going to extend my WiFi by about a foot?

    • it really works my Wifi is downstairs and upstairs connection drops out randomly but after using this device i never have any drop out…… not even single one

Hmm. Testimonial sounds good. Might grab a couple.

        Cheers

  • Hi rep, sorry if this is a stupid question.

if my router is downstairs and I pair this up, then plug it into tv/something with USB upstairs, my upstairs devices will be able to run off that?

    • sure. thank you for question.

If the two devices are paired and within the radio coverage distance, that will works in your scenario. The device Operating Frequency is 2.5 GHz, it should be no problem for just 1 level up. We just tested in our office, it still working good in a distance of about 8-10 meters. You can plug it into TV or something with USB to power it up.

      • Sorry another question! Does this cut the internet speed to half (but with good signal) ? Because my internet speed is very slow at my place @.@

  • +1

    Thanks Rep, purchased one.

Thus the system is charging $3.65 for shipping!!?!!?

  • Seems you can buy up to 3 without getting charged postage but once you go over that, it changes the price.

    • it shouldn't. let me know if you want more

      • All good. I threw an order for three in there - I will easily find homes for them - people always whining about their wifi signal now NBN is about the place.

  • Does anyone know if these support WPA2 Enterprise?

  • Sorry they both look smillar to me, what difference is there ?

  • +1

"48 working hours" = up to 6 business days for shipping then?! Never seen anyone put working hours before.

  • So how long will it take to ship to Melbourne CBD?
